Minnesota Republicans show congressional Republicans how to win
By Ken Falkenstein | Thursday, July 14th, 2011 | PolicyMinnesota’s leftist Democrat governor, Mark Dayton, has given in and agreed to the Republican legislature’s budget that includes hundreds of millions of dollars in spending cuts. Dayton opposed this budget for weeks, resulting in a government shut-down. He tried the old leftist tactic of demagoguing the issue and demonizing the Republicans, but the Republicans held firm. And in so doing, they won, Governor Dayton caved, and the Republicans got their budget.
Compare the actions of the strong and principled Republicans in Minnesota with those of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has thrown in the towel in federal debt reduction negotiations and proposed offering President Obama a $2.5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling with no spending cuts at all.
The firm resolve of the Minnesota Republicans, and the total and absolute victory that they achieved, should be an inspiration and example to our Republican leaders in Washington. Stand firm, stick to your principles, and do not back down.

Let’s wait a few months and see what the unintended consequences of the shut down have been.
Seems to me the Democratic Farm Labor Governor is caving in to a proposal the Republicans can not guarantee they will deliver on.
I guess this might be as if President Obama caved into McDonnell’s proposal as a compromise but it was not enough of a compromise for the Republicans in the House?
Ooops, he said as his cheeks turned red with embarrassment, he stated McDonnell in that last post when he meant McConnell. Without trying to justify the error, he asks for forgiveness.
LD, that’s RINO talk…
Ken,
I don’t know how to break this to you. But here goes: Congressional Repubs don’t want to be shown how to win nor do they want to “win” as you define it.
I absolutely agree, Ken!!! Who loses first in a shut down is really the “big government” types. The shut down starves them first.
Brian S., I agree there will be consequences. That is a given, but I seriously doubt they are anywhere dire enough to calling this anything but a victory. I look forward to the results. Sometimes you have suck it up and take the unpleasant path like a soldier, because in the end, we will all be far better off than continuing to follow the path to self-destruction.

Britt – Brilliantly put, and I agree completely.
No, unfortunately no one has won in MN. It’s an embarrassment to the state and they all look like a bunch of elementary school bullies.
If one side “wins” and the other side “loses” then as a state or a country, we’ve all lost.
Tor
You are so wrong or engaging in the typical left wing platitudes that conceal rather than reveal. Anytime leftism loses the country wins. I am Not talking about liberalism. I would say the same thing about reactionaries (as opposed to conservatives).
TOR, everyone wins. Even lovers of big government. At some point if you continue down the same route of massive spending and big government policies, you kill the golden goose that gives you those “big government” golden eggs.
The unemployment rate is dangerously high. At what point do those unemployed people get so numerous that business can’t survive because customers are too poor? At what point does small business collapses lead to less tax revenue that pays for govt programs? At what point does your state turn into California?
Federally, at what point does the massive over printing of US CURRENCY lead to people laughingly refuse to take dollars? Ask the Taj Mahal! Then what pays for your government goodies?
No TOR, this isn’t my team wins and yours loses. This isn’t a football game where the losing team suffers in the “self-esteem” department. This is real life where real people have a lower standard of living because of government’s fiscal abuses.
We all win in Minnesota. You just don’t know it yet.
The most interesting thing is that while all this grand standing is going on, the money needed for the next year or so is ALREADY IN THE TREASURY… just sitting there waiting. The agreements have all been arranged and if no additional debt is approved, the taxes owed by Lee Emil Wanta will be released… over $1.5 TRILLION… that’s right… over $1.5 TRILLION with a “T”. All the Republicans have to do is hold the line on more slimy Fed debt.
