Griffith continues appeal for federal relief to FEMA following devastating tornadoes
By | Saturday, May 21st, 2011 | Policy

In his weekly column, Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA9), continued to voice his concerns over the lack of relief provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the victims of a string of tornadoes that ripped through western Virginia the other week.

Griffith writes:

The appeal process is underway. With the urging of the Virginia Congressional Delegation, Governor McDonnell submitted an appeal of FEMA’s decision to deny federal disaster assistance for the tornadoes that struck in April. He has our full support. The powerful storms that impacted communities in Southwest Virginia destroyed and severely damaged hundreds of homes, including many that were uninsured or underinsured. The level of damage in the affected areas is truly devastating. Many people are still sleeping in tents or staying with family because they no longer have their homes. When the appeal reaches the President and FEMA, I strongly urge them to reverse their initial denial. My prayers remain with those affected by these storms.

The same storm system led to damage in neighboring Tennessee, which has received federal assistance. Kudos to Rep. Griffith for continuing to keep up pressure to ensure those most in need are helped.

Please tell Rep. Morgan Griffith that FEMA has simple rules to get assistance. It would seem the damage in Virginia doesn’t reach the $$$ amount required to receive assistance.

Pretty simple reason Virginia was rejected… Oh and it would likely be more federal debt spending so he should be happy at least in that manner that Virginia was rejected. Sorry…

I’ll be honest here, William, I’m conflicted. I think Griffith is right to call out the hypocrisy of FEMA, but at the same time, do we really need it?

I wonder where state and local help is? Do we really need FEMA? Where’s the promotion of charities actively helping in the area? I’d gladly and willingly contribute.

I like to help everyone but there are rules to be followed. FEMA would get a call to assist everyday if there were no minimum damage requirements to meet. I’d like to see Virginians get the help they need. In this case, it seems FEMA isn’t the answer. Sad…
