McDonnell Calls on Virginians to Assist Tornado Victims; Radtke to Visit Affected Areas on Friday

The deadly string of of tornadoes that ripped across the South last month killed hundreds of Americans and left devastated communities in its wake.  Virginia was not left unscathed: throughout April, ten people were killed and hundreds or homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed in tornadoes from Halifax County to Abingdon.

While federal assistance will not be pouring into our Commonwealth to help the survivors rebuild, Gov. McDonnell is calling on all Virginians to come the aid of our neighbors:

“Times of natural disasters and other hardships bring out the best in Virginians. Those who are directly impacted are resilient and do not give up. Those who have not suffered a loss themselves step in to lend a helping hand, financial support and assistance to those who are in need,” Governor McDonnell said. “While government aid can help communities get back on their feet after a disaster, it is the often unheralded financial, physical, and emotional support from faith-based organizations, private businesses, non-profit organizations, volunteers and other good Samaritans that make the largest impact on the recovery effort. That is why I am reminding all Virginians that, while the headlines may have moved on from those whose lives have been devastated by these storms, those who are working to rebuild their lives still need our support. I encourage everyone to help our fellow Virginians in this difficult time, and I thank all those who have already given so generously to this effort.”

Individual aid efforts and those sponsored by many other private and faith-based organizations have contributed significant resources or funds toward rebuilding efforts. The governor has also pledged to contribute state Disaster Recovery Funding to assist localities in their efforts to rebuild.

Virginia-based charities like Gleaning for the World and God’s Pitcrew were on the ground in the affected areas providing assistance to the survivors soon after the tornadoes hit.  Other Virginians–individuals and businesses–wishing to make donations can do so by visiting the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s website.

Among those Virginians answering Gov. McDonnell’s call for assistance is Senate candidate Jamie Radtke, who will be visiting affected areas and survivors in southwestern Virginia tomorrow.

Historically, our term Commonwealth comes from the old English “Commonweal,” meaning “well-being.”  At times like these, by praying for and lending a helping hand to our neighbors who are in need,  we have an opportunity to live up to that original concept by promoting the well-being of our fellow man.  Those receiving our support will be most grateful.
