VPOD 115: Sen. Mark Obenshain
By JR Hoeft | Thursday, May 5th, 2011 | Podcasts* Senator Mark Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) joins us to talk about redistricting one final time and what it means for the 2011 campaign. Obenshain was one of five Republicans in the senate to vote against the plan.
Here are some choice quotes from the podcast:
“I wish more Republicans had voted against this plan; I wish the governor had vetoed this plan, but he didn’t.”
“Virginia Beach looks a heck of a lot better than the Democrats’ first plan.”
“Nobody’s been talking very much about the way the lines were drawn in northern Virginia and the manner in which those were drawn. But you take some of those districts and look at some of the contortions they have gone through to protect liberal and Democratic districts in northern Virginia and you’ll be amazed!”
And what about the 2011 senate races?
“I’m not as much interested in the R & D as I am the L & C. I want a conservative majority in the state senate, and I think we have an opportunity to that, but it’s not going to be easy.”
Obenshain also said the top five Democrats for Republicans to challenge are Phil Puckett, Edd Houck, Roscoe Reynolds, Ralph Northam, and John Miller.
* After Obenshain, Eve Marie Gleason and I provide our own perspective on redistricting, including our own disappointment in Senate Republicans and their motives and our thoughts on the open senate seats. Eve Marie also had the chance to catch-up this week with Steve Waters, the former consultant to Del. Bob Marshall, who was just hired by George Allen and we discuss that conversation. Not to mention our analysis on the U.S. Senate campaign and the challenges faced by each candidate that enters the race.
