Bowditch is pick to replace retiring Morgan?
By | Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 | Politics

Del. Harvey Morgan (R-98) has decided to call it quits after his brief stint in the General Assembly. Having served the peninsula for more than 32 years, the 81-year-old Morgan is going spend more time with his family and friends, and pursuing hobbies, such as sailing, reports the Daily Press.

This will surely create a free-for-all for the nomination, but a source tells Bearing Drift that both Morgan and First District Congressman Rob Wittman, who used to represent the neighboring 99th District in the House of Delegates, are taking a look at Sherwood Bowditch, who once flirted with the idea of running for the Republican congressional nomination following the passing of the late Rep. JoAnn Davis.

Bowditch, from Gloucester, is in the insurance business and has been chairman of the Republican Party in Gloucester, as well as a delegate to the 2004 Republcian National Convention.

Bowditch’s viability as a candidate revolves entirely how quickly he can generate support from various groups in the area.

“Flirted with the idea of running for Republican congressional nomination”?

He did run – didn’t he? Didn’t he finish 2nd or 3rd in final rounds of balloting at the convention that nominated Rob Wittman?

Good. We’ll beat him like a drum in Novemeber if that’s who yall pick. I know him personally and he’s very socially awkward and doesn’t have any communication skills whatsoever. Tired of seeing Gloucester get all the representation. West Point deserves a seat at the table too.

He didn’t flirt. He ran. On the fifth ballot at the convention, he and Chuck Davis realized that if they threw their delegates to Wittman, Wittman would have enough votes to beat Jost. So I’m not surprised that Wittman owes him one.

Rumor has it that the Democrats are working hard to recruit 21 year old college student John Murray 21 year old college student, former McDonnell intern and lifetime citizen of West Point. Should be an interesting race. Would be the first time they nominated someone since the 90′s.

A 21 year old college student and former Republican?! That’s the best they can do?

Bowditch is a tireless campaigner with a knack for coalition building. He completely spooked Jost at the 1st District Convention and picked up delegate votes as the balloting went into the afternoon. Bowditch’s gesture that shifted Wittman into the first position filled the Stafford County HS gym with a endless roar and was a game changing moment in Virginia Republican politics.

    That convention was AWESOME!

I’m hearing that Jenn Little, Mathews Co School Board member is seriously considering a Democratic attempt. My neighbor, who is involved with D activities told me she’s got significant amount of support from her statewide involvement and her serious local connections. Wouldn’t that be an interesting race…

Whoever gets the seat is going to have big shoes to fill. A big thank, you to outgoing Del. Harvey B. Morgan-a true Virginia gentleman, a delegate who stood up for the Bay, for the Middle Peninsula, and what he thought was right. D We need more legislators like Delegate Morgan

Who’s going to be the Republican champion for Chesapeake Bay/environmental issues now?

    Not Jeff Frederick:

You, sir, are an idiot. Bowditch brought a bunch of votes from his backyard to the 1st CD conventin and added the most liberal/RINO votes as other lower-penisula candidates dropped. He is a big government Republican with the ego the size of a small truck. Hopefully, he will get a strong challenge.

While Bowditch did throw his support to Whitman, it was Chuck Davis’ support that finished the fight. Bowditch’s lib supporters would never have voted for Jost, but many of Davis’ might have.

Finally, the convention was not in Stafford, nor anywhere near Stafford.

    cheers

SE VA: Let me echo that. Morgan was among the most thoughtful legislators in Richmond. Not a knee-jerk partisan or an idealogue, he actually examined the issues and voted for what he thought made the best sense.

Sherwood Bowditch would be an excellent choice. He is a lifelong resident of the district, a strong conservative, and a great guy. The wonderful work he has done with the Boys and Girls Club is just one of many examples.

Sherwood Bowditch is quietly involved with and well-respected by state and local figures alike. He is very well-informed on a broad range of subjects. And he gets along well with just everyone, much like Harvey Morgan.
Recently when there was a death in Rob Wittman’s family which we learned about after we had assembled to hear him speak, we called upon Sherwood to take his place. Sherwood jotted some notes while we filled up time with a song; then he spoke informatively and lucidly for about 10 minutes, just as if he’d had weeks to prepare. He’s the best!!!!
