Are trackers paid campaign staff or just volunteers? Being a tracker would be such a boring assignment for a volunteer.

usually the state party pays for the trackers.

Jason: I don’t know about that. First, being a tracker give you a look at how the other half live and thinks, which would have to deepen your understanding of how politics works. So that could be fascinating. Second, the last guy who tracked Allen got made world famous. (Okay, maybe not WORLD famous, but sort of famous). Beats stuffing envelopes.

I agree with Steve. This is a great job. You learn a lot, and who knows – you could record one of those infamous moments that puts you on the party map.

I’m sure it would be fascinating–initially–but to hear the same stump speech over and over with little variation? For me, that would get old quickly.

Welcome to a reporter’s life;-) Some of them change it up now and then. Allen isn’t one of them. The only time he gets off script is if the pages get stuck together. I guess the one time he did get off script he got in trouble for it, so that’s probably a good policy. Doug Wilder, on the other hand, really never gave the same speech twice.

I do not see what is such a big deal about trackers. In Va-2 the dem tracker David is actually a decent guy who was doing his job. He was simply doing his job. If you are not comfortable with a kid pointing a minicam at you then consider another line of work.

I wonder though how many trackers have crossed over to our Party over the last few cycles… hearing good idea’s long enough has to have some impact on you.
