Virginia Speaker of the House Bill Howell’s office just sent this. So sorry to hear it.
Statement by House Speaker William J. Howell
– On the Death of House of Delegates Clerk Bruce F. Jamerson –
RICHMOND, VA – Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) today issued the following statement regarding the death of the Bruce F. Jamerson, Clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates and Keeper of the Rolls of the Commonwealth:
“On behalf of the Virginia House of Delegates, I express our tremendous grief and sorrow at the death of not only a distinguished and respected professional but our dear friend Bruce Jamerson.
“As Clerk of the House of Delegates for 20 years, Bruce embodied so much of what is good and noble about public service. He was a consummate professional who understood well that the first rule of success is hard work. That he always did without fail, with a warm and friendly demeanor and out of an abiding respect for every member, staff colleague or visitor to Mr. Jefferson’s Capitol. Indeed, all who had the honor of knowing or the pleasure of working with Bruce recognized quickly that his life-long commitment to service was motivated in no small part by the infectious pride he took in being part of the fabric of Mr. Jefferson’s “temple on the hill.” His dedicated leadership in the 2004-2007 restoration of Virginia’s historic State Capitol is a lasting legacy for which we and future generations can enjoy and thank him.
“By any measure, Bruce Jamerson led a remarkable life of contribution and service. His stewardship of the Virginia Capitol Foundation, dedication to the Boy Scouts of America, participation in the American Legion’s Virginia Boys State program and his active commitment to his church are but a few of the many ways that Bruce gave back to that in which he believed and worked with those he loved. His remarkable service to the Virginia House of Delegates, to his local community and the entire Commonwealth merits the grateful admiration and respect of all Virginians.
“Like so many, I will always remember Bruce’s character and gentle kindnesses. My rich memories of him are perhaps only surpassed by my gratitude for his friendship and counsel to me as Speaker as well as for the fine example he leaves behind.
“Our prayers and the support of the entire House of Delegates family are with his devoted wife, Elizabeth, and his daughter, Ainslie, during this time of grief for them and us all.”

A great guy, who did his job in an exemplary fashion under both Democrats and Republicans.
I am very sorry to hear this. Bruce served the people of this Commonwealth well for many years.
Bruce was an amazing man. In the often contentious House, he was absolutely unflappable. An authority on the Constitution and parliamentary procedure, he herded the cats with more grace than any man could. He will be absolutely missed and leaves tremendous shoes for another to fill. What a devastating loss.
Bruce was a great man… I am very saddened to hear of his passing. I wish folks could tell him what an institution he was to Virginia, and what a great example he was for so many.
RIP, Bruce.
To say that I as shocked when I heard would be an understatement. I just talked to Bruce during the Session. He was a good person and will be sorely missed. He served the General Assembly and the people of the Commonwealth well. There will be a gaping hole at the Capitol.
My heart goes out to his family.
We met Bruce when he was a young high school student working in the mail room at the General Assembly. He came home with our young son who was a House page. Bruce was a fine young man who brought his kind and lovely mother to our house to meet us (or for us to meet!) We followed his professional life since those times, and were on his special card recipients list which never failed. What a fine asset to Va. Bruce turned out to be and what a credit to those who sponsored him. We, Robbie Owen and I, were always very proud of this fine young man and were glad to have been a small part of his life. Our sympathies go to Elizabeth and Ainslee.
I spent many days and nights in the gallery of the House. Bruce was always cool during late night sessions. I was always amazed at how fast he could go through the budget bill; or any other bill for that matter. Bruce was one of the good guys; He will be sorely missed.
Bruce and I went to high school together. He used to give me a ride to school every morning once he had his driver’s license and car. Bruce was always bubbling over with ideas, you could almost see the wheels turning in his head. He was so proud of his service as a page. Who knew it would lead to a career? I’ve followed his career over the years, clipping any article about him to stick inside the yearbook. I am proud that he was part of my graduating class. My prayers go out to his family. We’ll miss you, Bruce. RIP
What a tragedy. Being Clerk of the House is no small matter, and while I did not know him personally, from all accounts he held the job as a true professional and with absolute alacrity. We may never know what demons drove him to take his own life. Maybe it’s best we don’t know. What a loss.
