If Republicans Shut The Gov’t Down, Will The Tea Party Have Their Back?
By Shaun Kenney | Monday, March 28th, 2011 | PolicyJosh Pratt with the Lynchburg Tea Party argues an emphatic yes:
(F)ears of the Republicans “being blamed (for the government shutdown)” are unfounded. There are significant differences in the political structure of the nation since the 1990’s. The debt is over $14 Trillion and soaring, there was a clear mandate from the American people to repeal Obamacare on November 2nd, conservative communications – unlike the 90’s when the liberals dominated media – hold significant media share, and perhaps most importantly, the new political kingmaker, the Tea Party movement has come of age.
Republicans must stand on conservative principles and tell the Democrats that they will allow the Federal government to shut down. They must stare down the liberal enemy within and tell them that the Democrats’ plan to blame Republicans for a Federal government shut-down will not prevail.

I don’t understand the title. Dems never passed a budget when they had the votes. Are you referring to raising the debt ceiling rather than the FY11 budget? That would make more sense. By leftist logic if Obama came in with a 10 trillion dollar budget, the Repubs would be “shutting the govt down” if they didn’t fund all 10 trillion. In addition a govt shutdown doesn’t shut very much down.
If we are talking Repub tactics however I would have thought deleting the $105 billion hidden Obamacare funding a better and clearer fight since they could argue on principle it was a sneak and invalid expense. The other alternative would be an across the board cut. I fear the Repubs are as tactically clueless as they have ever been if they start with arbitrary cuts here and there. Unless and until they control more of the government it will be difficult to make selective cuts. Dems are going to lie about specific cuts as they have already started to do. Picking one thing or across the board negates that strategy. There is also a complete lack of understanding about the leftist use of the courts to force spending through the backdoor or prevent spending cuts.
Of course they will, the more apt question is “will anybody else have their backs?”
Awesome response SV and V! I believe the TP is marching on with the cut the budget or shut down the government agenda because we cannot continue on this road. That’s the good thing about standing on principle.
Hopefully, when TP candidates win in the next elections, their backs will be covered unlike how they were the last election. Gauging the stories so far…that’s a no.
will anybody else have their backs?”
The answer is No if the US is Portugal, Greece, UK etc or IL, CA, RI etc.
Josh Pratt better known as (Solovosky) is a large pompous joke. He is a very minor Tea Party person in Lynchburg and has never done anything to cover anyone’s back. He did nothing in the 5th last year giving great question to whatever he says. He stabbed several people in the back who were running for the nomination for Congress and is well known for attacking under false names to do so. Why would a bottom feeder like he is change his ways ?
I have worked for and with several elected officials who cast votes opposed by the quiet majority of their constituents because a vocal special interest group promised they would “have their backs” come election day. None of them survived, either losing reelection or choosing to retire rather than face the inevitable. The Tea party is a very vocal special interest group promising they will be the force deciding reelection outcomes. They threaten retribution to those who deviate even the smallest bit from the TP agenda and promise to have the back of those who mindlessly toe the line. They may be convincing themselves, but any member of Congress who believes the quiet majority of his or her constituents would approve shutting down the government should start writing the resume they will probably need following the 2012 elections.
Perry,
Why aren’t the Dems the ones shutting the government down? They had their chance to pass a budget and didn’t do so. Therefore there is NO FY11 budget at this time. The Repubs control the House and can write the (initial) FY11 budget. In other words, the Dems would be ADDing spending to the FY11 budget and shutting (non essential) govt down to force more spending.
Or do you subscribe to the Greece model of socialist government spending?
