Another Virginia team will be joining in the “How Sweet it is” chorus. VCU defeated Purdue in the third round of the NCAA Tournament and will advance to the Sweet 16 against Florida State on Friday. VCU again used its speed and agility to dominate Purdue. Bradford Burgess scored 23 points, as the Rams cruised to a 94-76 victory.
As for George Mason, they were not so lucky as they were defeated by the Ohio State Buckeyes, 98-66. The Patriots started off strong, but it was not enough to stop the Buckeyes dominating play. The Patriots were also without sophomore Luke Hancock, who out of the game with food poisoning.
Aside from two Virginia teams advancing, there were also some close matchups. Arizona held on, despite a near upset to Texas. Derrick Williams had a three pointer with 10 seconds left on the clock to propel the Wildcats to a Sweet 16 matchup with Duke.
Duke also had a close game, as Michigan nearly beat the Blue Devils. Michigan almost made the game go into overtime with a last second shot attempt by Darius Morris.
Now, we move on to the Sweet 16, where Kansas and Richmond will face each other. This could be a great game, as the Spiders are on a nine game winning streak. Will Kansas allow another Northern Iowa style upset?
As for VCU and Florida State, this will be a game to watch. The Seminoles are great at field goal defense and limit top scoring teams.
