Cantor says president and his econ-team lack the heart and dedication to fix econ woes
By | Friday, February 18th, 2011 | Policy

Let’s travel back two years to a discussion about tax policy and what to do about the then current economic state of affairs.

The president summoned to the White House, shortly after his inauguration, the Republican leadership team for a true moment of bipartisanship to discuss how to fix the current funk in America’s economy.

BusinessWeek takes the rest:

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor…handed President Barack Obama a list of ideas to fix the economy. Pointing to a small business tax-cut item, Obama said: “We disagree on tax policy.” When Cantor tried to justify his own position, Obama responded: “Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day, I won.”

Is it any wonder then that today, at a campaign breakfast in his honor in Richmond, Cantor made the following statement:

“I can remember sitting in the White House with the president and his economic team [two years ago] discussing ways that we can get people back to work in this country. And I thought to myself back then, ‘I’m sitting in a room with probably some of the smartest people in the country, but I just don’t see in their hearts that they have the penchant or dedication to the private sector – the small businesses – that are the real job engines of America.’”

Indeed, elections do have consequences, Mr. President. And that’s exactly why the U.S. House GOP is set to do the right thing and slash billions from an over-bloated federal bureaucracy.

Cantor, regarding this new approach to cutting spending, said, “We put in place a cut and grow agenda, we want to cut spending, we want to cut the job impeding regulations and we want to grow this economy to let the private sector begin to create jobs again.”

Indeed, what the House has attempted this week has been to cut spending and allow members to work their will; from our observations, that’s exactly what is happening during an unprecedented open process.

In Virginia, because of a dedication to creating the conditions necessary for private sector job growth and not falling victim to union thuggery, as Wisconsin is being exposed to, $6 billion has been cut from the state budget (Kudos even to part-time governor and full-time Obama campaigner, Tim Kaine), and our state has gone from 35th in private sector job growth to 4th.

That doesn’t just happen. It takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance by public servants who are willing to do what is right, not necessarily what is politically expedient.

If only the federal government could learn the lesson we have in Virginia that government needs to grow smaller and live within its means, while only funding its core responsibilities. At least Cantor has the U.S. House moving in the right direction.

Obama said that working for a business was like being behind enemy lines (as a spy no less). I know people who don’t have a particular liking for working for a private company but I have never heard any of them say something like that. However, we all know the kind of people who do say and think that. The Left regularly praises Venezuela, Cuba and China. They called the peaceful protests of the Tea Party as un-American, fascist etc etc. Why is anyone still wondering about the Left’s attitude to private enterprise and Constitutional government?
