Better late than never: MSM finally notices CWA shenanigans
By | Monday, February 14th, 2011 | Policy

AFP released the above hilarious video parody of this situation using xtranormal.com. (You WILL be seeing more from BD from this site!)

As posted first here on Bearing Drift last week, we noted how inappropriate it was for a Communication Workers of America representative and Third District Democratic Committee member to effectively strong-arm House Democrats into voting against a benign communications bill.

After a few days to consider it, finally the Washington Post and Virginian-Pilot decided to take notice.

Sensing a potential backlash, Minority Leader Ward Armstrong moved so quick against CWA he also almost got whiplash.

The bill passed out of committee overwhelmingly 20-1. Then the letter from CWA arrived and Armstrong indignantly voted against the bill, along with 19 of his closest Democratic colleagues. Then, when the Post comes calling, suddenly Armstrong grows a backbone and says:

“If they think they’re buying my vote they can keep their money”

Really? The evidence appears to point to the contrary.

PS Would it have killed the Pilot or the Post for a shout-out?

PPS I noticed through this process that it’s acceptable to have union reps in district committees for the Democratic party. Therefore, I would assume the Dems won’t have a problem when the GOP formalizes relationships with, say, the Chamber of Commerce, NRA, or even the AFP, will they?

And so finally, the fifth-column for the Democratic Party decides this is newsworthy?!?!

So because I genuinely do not know.. what is the problem here? How is this any different from what the NRA or any other lobbying group does? If you don’t give me what I want I’ll take my ball and go home has always been the tactic used by lobbyists.. so I’m at a loss trying to find what the controversy is. Any insight anyone can offer?

I just hope that nobody has a problem with union reps who are on district committees in the Republican party – if so, I’m in trouble.

Just as long as you don’t bully delegates and senators as “your votes” all should be well, Brian.

…but more seriously, you gotta admit that the CWA chose a particularly bellicose method of imposing its thoughts on the Democratic bench, did it not? Effective, yes… but hardly what most folks would say is a highlight of the democratic process.

While the language used might be a little blatant, what’s going on here isn’t unusual in the slightest. Do you think the business community does not play hardball with Republicans (and Democrats) to get its way? Remember a couple of years ago when the Virginia FREE ratings were manipulated to punish Republicans who voted against transportation bills the business community wanted? People, groups and organizations that support politicans expect the politicians to support their interests. This isn’t any different than the Tea Party activists saying they’d keep their eyes on the new GOP members of Congress they helped elect, to make sure they were doing what they were elected to do.
