Dear Democrats: PLEASE Nominate Rick Boucher
By Jason Johnson | Thursday, February 10th, 2011 | Politics
With the news that U.S. Senator Jim Webb will not stand for reelection, Democrats are now searching for a replacement. While they have many potential candidates, including the Governor of the DNC, Tom Perriello, Krystal Ball and Terry McAuliffe, one Virginia Democrat stands head and shoulders above them all: Rick Boucher. Why should Democrats nominate Boucher?
First and foremost, President Obama loves Rick Boucher, and Democrats should be all about keeping the president happy; after all, he was all that stood between them and a 1994-esque electoral defeat…wait…nevermind.
Second, after Morgan Griffith’s stunning come-from-way-behind victory over Boucher on November 2nd, Rick Boucher has been among the millions of unemployed Americans. If President Obama wants to win a second term, he needs the unemployment rate to decrease. By nominating Rick Boucher, Virginia Democrats could honestly say that they (finally) put one unemployed American back to work*, at least until November 2012.
Third, Democrats just haven’t fielded a good candidate from western Virginia since, well, Creigh Deeds. To be fair, Rick Boucher is no Creigh Deeds: Boucher actually managed to get out of the State Senate—something Deeds has been trying (unsuccessfully) to do since 2005, thanks in no small part to Bob McDonnell.
Fourth, did I mention that Barack Obama LOVES Rick Boucher? ‘Nuff said.
Fifth, Virginia needs a senator who is so proud of his earmarks that he will get married on them. Clearly, at this critical juncture in our history, America needs more bike trails and no one will fight harder for our Constitutional right to bike than Rick Boucher.
If those five reasons aren’t enough for Virgina Democrats to see the light and nominate Rick Boucher, they have only two options: get used to saying “Sen. George Allen” again or learn how to correctly pronounce Sen. Radtke’s surname.
* Not unlike the temporary-jobs-for-unemployed-former-candidates program recently launched by the Republican Party of Delaware.
