WEBB OUT!

BREAKING…

UPDATE: Ben Smith over at Politico has the scoop:

Webb appeared likely to face a rematch with former Senator George Allen, whom he beat in a bruising 2006 contest. He had expressed ambivalence about the prospect of another run, and has said he never planned a life in politics.

UPDATE x2:  Jim Riley over at Virginia Virtucon had the scoop almost two weeks ago, though Webb’s retirement had been long rumored.

And the senate race becomes even more interesting.

I wonder who will be the democratic candidate ?

Could this mean that whoever wins the Republican race will be the next Senator?

  2. Shaun Kenney February 9, 2011 12:05 pm

    My bet? Tom Perriello.

I feel like a truck just hit me.
From the frying pan into the fire.
    Maybe Nye might run too.

  4. J.R. Hoeft February 9, 2011 12:18 pm

Nope. I agree with Shaun, heard the rumors prior to the November election, and said as much on the Schilling Show.

My bet is also Tom Perriello.

shaun, Perriello would be a nightmare for Republicans. He is a hardworking campaigner; closely tied with unions & Soros & half-way likable. but as close 5CD Congressional race watcher, you already know this.

  6. kelley in virginia February 9, 2011 12:21 pm

    Perriello does have bad votes.

  7. Shaun Kenney February 9, 2011 12:23 pm

Completely agree, Kelley — though I will say this much. Perriello will be a clear contrast, and in the crescent of Virginia, we *love* clear contrasts…

Perriello will run a tough campaign, no question.

Sen. Webb’s announcement makes it just that much more important that we choose the strongest nominee in our primary. Tom Perriello (IF he is the Democrats’ eventual nominee) has his baggage, but as Kelley said, he’s a strong campaigner and can also be very elusive. We need a nominee who is an excellent debater and has the instincts to seal the deal for the GOP. If Perriello can keep the race close, he has a decent shot at winning.

over at NLS, they are saying (or maybe its just Ben saying on his Twitter) that Perriello would not challenge WH & Kaine for this nomination.

Tim Kaine gets sent to East Bumble as ambassador. Perriello may well be nominee.

According to Webb’s statement this morning, his 2006 campaign was focused “to restore economic fairness and social justice”. This comes as news to me.

What position in the Obama administration is he auditioning for?

  11. Brian Schoeneman February 9, 2011 15:11 pm

This is Kaine’s seat. If he decides to run, no other credible Democrats will get in – no Nye, Periello, McAuliffe or anyone of that ilk. The White House will make sure of that. If Kaine decides to skip it, all bets are off.

Radtke will be on John King’s show on CNN tonight at 7pm.

  13. James Hawkins February 9, 2011 20:40 pm

I watched John King talk about the Virginia Senate election in 2010 (at least that is what I thought he said) and say all sorts of things that made no sense to me. I hope someone will post that segment on u-tube.
CNN (Obama “lapdog”) was the only English station on the cable at my hotel in Colombia. I love CNN like Obama loves the Tea Party and Fox News.
