Transportation bill clears House and Senate
By | Monday, February 7th, 2011 | Policy

The Senate passed with overwhelming bipartisan majority S.B.1446, Governor Bob McDonnell’s $4 billion transportation bill. Senators voted 34-6 in favor of the bill.

This comes on the heels of last week’s House vote of 65-33 to pass H.B. 2527.

McDonnell said in today’s press release:

“With each new vote in the General Assembly recognizing the merits of our transportation program, we are moving closer to jumpstarting needed transportation projects that will reduce congestion, create jobs and open additional parts of the Commonwealth to economic development while creating a rail operating and capital fund to ensure the continuation of Virginia’s passenger rail system,” said McDonnell in a press release. “This fiscally conservative plan leverages our available resources and bonding authority to expedite the important transportation improvements we need. It also saves taxpayers money by capitalizing on some of the best interest rates and construction bids in modern history.”

To save us the heartache. Can we ban Mike Barrett from discussion on this one?

I guess I lose. I guess toll roads are going to be sprouting up far and wide across Virginia.

I am going to hate it when I am proven right. Toll roads are going to strangle our economy.

No Tyler, you can’t ban common sense from these pages. Since borrowing fever seems to have taken over the Legislature, some form of this legislation is bound to pass. Given the risk, and the effect on the General Fund, I find this action to be astounding. Hampton Roads will be rung by toll roads controlled by international conglomerates, and maintenance of existing highways will continue to be withdrawn to make debt service payments on new projects that will line the pockets of overseas investors. Gosh I hope I am wrong!

Mike, if history is any indication, you are.

Actually LittleDavid you convinced me months ago that toll roads are bad and that it would be better to raise gas taxes. Neither George Washington or Allen West gave up when defeated, they kept trying. Hopefully you will too.

Mr Spires, while you may not agree with the Honorable Mr Barrett; he does not hid behind a pseudonym. He has the courage to publicly state his beliefs. Personally, I admire him for that.

May not be best to only read articles by people you agree with. I will read Daily Kos, Pravda, MSNBC, China Daily, CNN, and even articles by people who believe that CO2 will destroy the world. Understanding or at least being exposed to different points of view can be useful.
