Politico tells us something we already knew
By Ward Smythe | Monday, January 17th, 2011 | PoliticsPolitico has an “exclusive” this morning that George Allen is running for Senate.
So, maybe the upcoming announcement is “exclusive,” but c’mon, we’ve known Allen was considering this for months.
An Allen announcement means there will be two official candidates in the race to replace One-Term Senator Jim Webb. Tea Party Activist Jamie Radtke announced her intentions to run last month. Also expected to enter are Delegate Bob Marshall, and Prince William Supervisor Chair Corey Stewart.

This “exclusive” is not that “exclusive.” I spoke to someone very familiar and close to the upcoming campaign last week too who said that a campaign announcement is just around the corner.
Doesn’t take a rocket scientist though, or confirmation from the campaign, to have figured this out. After the GOP Advance, where Allen was once again the “rock star”, his book tour, all the speaking engagements throughout the state and nation, his media blitz…
Who wouldn’t know that he was running. The only question was when…and we knew it couldn’t be long after the Radtke announcement.
I really should have gone with my gut and posted on this last week.
Oh c’mon, outside of some business interests and his own paid supporters or wannabees, Allen is nobody’s “rock star” now.
Years of pork spending and government nannyism votes during the Bush era showed him to be nearer a RINO than a Tea Party insurgent.
I’m no Radke supporter (or anyone else), but Allen is old moderate news.
Ciao.
well, rtwingtroll, at least you properly id yourself.
Did you go to the GOP Advance? If so, you’ll know why I said what I did. If not, you’ll just have to take my word for it that the GOP activists that attended are very high on the former U.S. Senator.

Well, I did miss the Advance’s high-priced dinner where perhaps that was the case. Though I spoke to a number of folks he went even to that and no one said anything like it.
That said, I was a speaker at the Tea Party Convention (as was Allen) and few seemed to care about him, and of those who did, most were wondering how he could show up after his voting record in the Senate.
I have nothing against Sen Allen and believe he was a victim of the gangster socialist smear machine (and quite frankly his inept response to it). However, I should note that almost all the independents and occasional Dems (sometimes voting Repub) I know are down on him and probably won’t vote for him in a rematch between him and Webb. Rematches rarely turn out well – remember Washington state and Dino Rossi who was a better candidate than Allen. At the least Allen better come up with a game plan to win them over. It will take work.
Personally, I think that Allen needs to remain focused on rebuilding the Redskins and not get distracted by running for public office.
In the special voice of Shirley Bassey, the risky er, uh, risque theme song for Allen 2012.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_vuKFrEir4
The purpose of Politico is to tell folks stuff they already know.
