Big money from a big union for two GOP candidates
By JR Hoeft | Saturday, January 15th, 2011 | PoliticsIt would appear that the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers likes two of the candidates for the GOP nomination in the 91st.
Kudos to IBEW on being bipartisan; 98% to Democrats and 2% to Republicans (the two running for this seat in the 91st).
Update – it would appear IBEW was a big Jody Wagner fan (former Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov.). Jody Wagner, in turn, is a fan of one of the candidates.
This campaign is getting more and more interesting by the minute.

I make a big distinction between private sector unions and government sector unions. In my view the latter should not be permitted to engage in any political contributions or activity.
As for the private sector unions, they need to get rid of the socialists or worse running most of them. In that case the Repubs should pursue them on the basis of JOBS. The country can’t be competitive with bloated payrolls but neither can it prosper with constant adversarial labor mgt relations. It is beginning to sink in with blue collar workers that the Dems have contempt for them (as opposed to their socialist bosses). It was little noticed but in 2004 Bush 43 came reasonably close to winning the midwest states Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Of course in 2010 the midwest was a big element in the GOP sweep while they made little headway in socialist leaning states like NY and CA.
Is this guy DESPERATE or what????
Stuart put out 2 dishonest mail outs about his opponents, hiding behind the name of another group (run by a campaign aide). Thursday, Tom Gear exposed Stuart for claiming to be dear friends on a robo-call when they hardly know each other.
Now, we learn that he takes liberal union money when he claims to be right wing?
Dishonest….and desperate. This guy is scary.
LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!!!
As a Tea Party supporter, I am pissed at Chris Stuart and his sleazy advisors for twisting the Tea Party slogan. I was at 2 debates where Green said he was going to “party like it’s 1773,” as a tribute to the Tea Party.
Mr. Stuart, however long I remain on this earth I will fight against you in every sleazy election that you run. You knew exactly what another candidate was saying, and you twisted his words, also ridiculing the Tea Party in the process.
You are dishonest, and so is your campaign. I am now taking the day off of work Tuesday, and hopefully one of your opponents will find something for me to do to work against you.
I think it is a good thing. Frankly you all need to get off the “anti-union” bandwagon and look at reality. I do not expect you actually will ever do it but I can always hope…
The National firefighters(IAFF) and local Hampton Roads IAFF unions(Chesapeake & VB) have endorsed many republican members and candidates over the past decade. Recently, the National Fire union President shared the following message with local fire union members. “The IAFF is a rare union that enjoys friends on both sides of the political aisle, and that has led us to achieve success in the past with GOP majorities. Speaker of the House-designate John Boehner (R-OH) has been a long-time recipient of IAFF and FIREPAC support(union member money).
Many of Boehner’s presumptive committee chairs have also benefited from the trademark “gold and black” IAFF support, including Representative Dave Camp (MI) in Ways and Means, Representative Peter King (NY) on Homeland Security, future Budget Committee Chair Representative Paul Ryan (WI), Representative Howard “Buck” McKeon (CA) in Armed Services, Representative John Kline (MN) in Education and Labor, as well as two of the candidates for the top spot on the Energy Committee – Representative Fred Upton (MI) and Representative John Shimkus (IL) and various incoming subcommittee chairs on the Appropriations Committee.”
Just because you think the word “union” is bad, doesn’t make it so. As union members those employees what the best candidates to win. If you take the time to listen and learn, you will find the code words used to rile up the base and general public are not always true.
William is absolutely right. I’m glad to see the IBEW guys taking a look at a Republican and I’ll have to thank their Washington representation when I run into them next week.

Dear William,
If you think my post was anti union you didn’t read it. I’m only anti government union for obvious reasons. The Repubs can’t make headway in the midwest without appealing to blue collar workers, but they need to make clear that socialist or worse union bosses are counterproductive to those very workers.
We need Chris Stuart like a fish needs a bicycle.
I got five election flyers in my mailbox today. One was from Teresa Schmidt, one was from Chad Green, one was from Chris Stuart and two were from the “FFCN PAC”.
I had to look up the FFCN PAC.
Teresa Schmidt’s card was an endorsement from Tom Gear and Chad Green’s was a laydown of his experience and his plans. Chris Stuart’s piece represents him as “Hampton’s Own” and lists his backers (including Kyle Adams) and accomplishments. It fails to mention that the outgoing delegate, Tom Gear, blasted Chris and publicly called him dishonest and said, “You are NOT ‘my good friend’ ” as Stuart’s robocalls had falsely claimed. It also fails to address the issue raised at the forum by one concerned voter that Stuart established a legal residence in this district (so he could run) less than two weeks ago and hasn’t been spending his nights there. Basically, the voter felt he was a carpetbagger and an opportunist. I felt Stuart was evasive on the issue. So I dug further. The more I dug, the more manure I unearthed.
We’ll get back to that.
The two pieces of literature funded by the FFCN PAC grossly misrepresent the candidates and their points. We really don’t need this kind of bull$@#t in politics — let’s call things the way they are and not give snippets of sentences to mislead voters.
The two FFCN mailers are defamatory and intentionally misleading.
One quotes Gordon Helsel as having said, “Don’t send me to Richmond handcuffed” and the second piece quotes Chad Green as having said “When I go to Richmond, I am going to party . . .”
Neither piece is worth the paper it is printed on. Pure scum and slime. This race deserves better. So do voters.
From my perspective, Chris Stuart reflects everything that derailed the Republican Party and ushered in the Democratic demise of our state and our nation. I just learned today that on August 3, 2009, Chris Stuart requested and paid for four different URLs:
1. Chris Stuart for City Council (the race he was entering at that point in time and position he has held for less than one year)
2. Chris Stuart for Delegate (this “unanticipated” race)
3. Chris Stuart for Mayor (a race he may intend to enter when he tires the delegate job or his City Council job — oh, wait, apparently, he’s already tired of that after less than one year.)
4. Chris Stuart for Congress (a race he likely thinks will be his next step after mayor and before the governor’s mansion or the White House)
After hearing him lash out against term limits, perhaps we should ask him to limit his job search focus.
The FFCN PAC mailers were funded by Kyle Adams and other Stuart cronies. Stuart needs to apologize for them or publicly denounce the FFCN PAC for misleading voters.
The first mailer from FFCN PAC painted Gordon Helsel as a man Helsel-bent on raising taxes. I really didn’t get that impression at the forum and it’s not what he said. Helsel was, perhaps, the most experienced candidate with regard to transportation challenges and was discussing options that would be available to fund badly needed projects and simply said he didn’t want to be boxed in (e.g., “handcuffed”) if he won this seat and had to deal with those issues.
The second mailer is even more egregious. What Chad Green said was, “When I go to Richmond, I am going to party like it’s 1773!” in reference to the Boston Tea Party. He had just laid out $12 million in specific cuts he would initiate to save VA taxpayers money if elected and then made the statement to let voters know he had a budget axe and was going to slash spending and taxes — like our forefathers wanted to do in 1773.
Like others who know this information, I am seething at the unwarranted, deceptive slime and conspired plan to unfairly attack some fine candidates.
These flyers are only good if the roll in the bathroom is bare. We deserve better than this and we definitely deserve better than Chris Stuart. Even if he has lived in our district for almost two whole weeks.
I know this is off topic, but has anybody seen that Chris Stuart is putting his 4×8′s in cemeteries? Talk about a lack of moral standards. Even my ten year old knew that was wrong! We talked about it today over lunch and she couldn’t believe or understand why a candidate would put a 4×8 in a cemetery. She said she had never seen something so disrespectful, that was riding with her mom down Hampton Roads Center Parkway and noticed that a funeral was being held near one of the 4×8 locations. Talk about a lack of taste. Come one Chris, some locations are simply inappropriate, even my child knows that!
