Daniel Hernandez, Hero

20-year old intern had been working with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords for five days, but his quick action may have saved her life.

“Using his hand, Hernandez applied pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap, holding her upright against him so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood. Giffords was conscious, but quiet.

“The fact that Hernandez was nearby and able to react quickly probably saved Giffords’ life, said state Rep. Matt Heinz, D-Tucson, and a hospital physician. “

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Give that kid a medal and a job. That’s the kind of action under pressure you just can’t teach.

    I agree.

What a boss. Great work, son.

Thank God for that young man. And because he didn’t apply pressure to both sides, that probably saved her life also. He is a hero and deserves a medal for sure.

This really makes me wonder if our representatives will have to change the way they interact with their constituents. I was shocked when President Kennedy was killed, Martin Luther King was killed and Robert Kennedy was killed. Now, it’s multiple killings at a time. Terrible times.

I hope not Kathy. Maybe some added protection, but I hope they will still make themselves available to the costituents.

I would like to see a continued openess to the voters in spite of this tragic horror. I want to see a fully recovered Giffords still keeping in contact with voters. I would like the heros, like Daniel Hernandez remebered and have people have to struggle to recall the name of “that crazed man that shot all those people”. I hope America finds a way to articulate that despite this terrible event, that we have not been defeated, our spirits remain strong, we remain the great bastion of freedom, and we celebrate those that save lives rather than those that take them.

Daniel’s story just gets better ~ “He was working the “Congress on Your Corner” Event checking in people when he heard shots and suddenly saw bodies everywhere. That did not stop him, he not only ran toward where the shots were being fired he tried to help as many people as possible including the gravely injured Giffords.” http://www.hispanicallyspeakingnews.com/notitas-de-noticias/details/daniel-hernandez-20-yr-old-hero-at-tragic-arizona-shooting-intern-to-u/4159/

The kid does deserve a medal and a job.

Britt: I agree. If we let this make Congessmen squared to hold events in their districts without a huge security armada, we’ve let folks like this nut win. I do think we’ll see some changes though. Fewer apperances with NO security at all.

I have been thinking about this among other things since Saturday. Our times have changed and we need to adjust. What about slating some of the money we spend on the war against terrorism and pay for security for our representatives? Our servants on our soil need to be protected. What do you think?

Kathy: I hate it, but it might be neccesary. Your Congressman used to be the one official in the federal government you could talk to with no middle-men. I’d hate to see that end. But I also don’t want to see any more attacks like this.

Eventually that will be the case,I think it will only get worse, not immediately, but it shows how vulnerable elected officials are.
