The Hank Davis Two Step
By Steven Osborne | Saturday, January 8th, 2011 | Catch-AllI checked my mail the other day and found an interesting item from the Sierra Club, warning me of the dangers of uranium mining and imploring me to vote for Hank Davis.
This was not surprising as Hank Davis has made his opposition to uranium mining a central tenant in his campaign. However, voters are now beginning to discover that he was not always so opposed.
In a letter to the Editorial Board of the Danville Register and Bee, a chief geologist for Virginia Uranium, the company currently pursuing permission to mine the valuable resource, has brought to light some facts about Hank Davis’ record including the fact that he once supported uranium mining in the 1980′s and received a considerable sum of money from Marline Corp. the business that was trying to initiate a project at the Coles Hill site at that time.
Now it is certainly understandable and even permissible for someone to change their position, however, it is interesting that Davis would have no problem with uranium mining at a time when technology was not as far along as it is today. It is entirely possible that the technology is still not advanced enough to mine the uranium safely. The current study being done by the National Academy of Sciences will help to make that confirmation one way or the other.
The Republican candidate Bill Stanley has taken a more measured postion, pledging to support mining only if it can be done without harming the environment and if it is economically viable. Davis has taken a much more dogmatic position without having all of the facts at hand. He seems to have done the same thing back when he was advocating for Marline Corp. in favor of mining. Obviously he believed that mining was viable then, and the same concerns existed then as today.
Many would not be opposed to mining if it can be done responsibly, hopefully soon it will be possible for a region that has been devastated by unemployment to be able to capitalize on its resources.
Disclaimer: I am currently working in association with the Bill Stanley for Senate campaign. The views I have expressed are mine and mine alone.

The words “paid” & “volunteer” are not supposed to be in the same sentence.
“Pledging to support mining only if it can be done without harming the environment and if it is economically viable.”
Is there a subject anywhere in that sentence? I’m going to guess that you aren’t being paid to volunteer grammar.
@SouthsideCentral
@HisRoc
Objections noted and corrected. Thanks for the feedback.
What you said could be true, or it could be as simple as “Company’s employees are expected to support the Company’s business goals or else you will not be a Company employee for long.”
With both candidates being qualified for the office and quite similar in many ways (except for that “R” or “D” at the end of their names), I was really hoping that their stance on uranium mining wouldn’t be my deciding point in this election. It’s looking like my hopes won’t come true.
Now it’s time for my disclaimer: I have worked with both campaigns in regards to my work (WMDV-TV), therefore I feel that I have a conflict of interest in expressing my opinion in this race. That’s also another reason that SouthsideCentral has slowed down markedly.
@southsidecentral, are you saying that it is ok to have one opinion when it is paid for, and it is then acceptable to switch that opinion when it is politically expedient to do so? That seems to be the most dangerous and disingenuous opinion to have if one hopes to represent the citizens in Richmond…
Bill Stanley seems to have the energy and drive to do what is best for our part of the state, and not make a decision, or change his principled position just because the political winds change direction. Even the liberal Roanoke Times says Stanley’s position on uranium mining is a reasoned one in comparison to Davis’ position.
Just from what I have seen, and even from seeing Stanley on WMDV, it appears that he will go to Richmond and do what needs to be done to protect, promote and defend our area. I like that.

No.
