Kirwin’s Daily Press Column – ‘Uh oh: Mark Warner’s talking tax reform again’
By | Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 | Columns

Brian Kirwin’s column from last week was just published in the online version of the Daily Press. In it, he takes on Senator Mark Warner’s calls for “tax reform”.

Back when he was Gov. Warner, he proposed what he called tax reform to correct structural imbalances in the state budget. The major imbalance was that taxpayers had too much money when government wanted it.

“Structural imbalance” was not exactly “Give me liberty or give me death,” but it was enough to put the sheep’s clothing of reform over the tax increase wolf, and pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.

I didn’t see much reform then.

I did see the state budget leap by billions with major tax increases.

When a campaign tactician and dirty tricks coordinator takes on major policy issues, he is clearly out of his depth. Warner and the republican House of Delegates realized that Gilmore had bankrupted the Commonwealth, and at the insistence of bondholders, did increase revenue to ensure the Commonwealth was put back on a sound financial footing. To his dying day, this will stick in the craw of BK; my suggestion, get over it.

Mike, you think Light Rail is sound financial footing. I wouldn’t bank on your judgment.

Once again, Mike, you distort the truth on both Gilmore & Warner.

Gilmore had huge surplusses until the world economy, the US economy, the Virginia economy, and the stock market were sent into turmoil not by Gilmore, but the after effects of 9/11! As Gilmore left office there was still 1 billion in the “rainy day fund”.

Yes, Warner lied about not raising taxes & yes he inherited for a brief period of time a damaged economy caused by world events………not Jim Gilmore.

Waner raising taxes did NOT balance the budget. As early as April of that year trends were reported in state revenue gains that the budget would be balanced without taxes. It was a recovery………not Mark Warner! In fact, the state budget was balanced BEFORE Mark Warner’s tax increase ever went into effect. These are facts that can be researched easily.

The GOP & RPV did next to nothing to defend Gilmore against the Left and a complicit media. Gilmore is equally guilty for not doing enough to defend his good name. Many RINOs were not about party loyalty and “defend the candidate no matter what”, like they are now in preserving every endangered RINO still left with some power. You still don’t have enough Republicans correcting the false history foisted on us by the Left.

Fine, I a Libertarian, will point it out. Enough Republicans won’t do it, so I will do THEIR job for them as much as I am able on this particular portion of history.

Newspaper archives, google etc. Is all you need to verify when 9/11 happened, its effects on the economy, the surplusses Gilmore had, the fact that the budget was already in surplus again that summer right before Warner’s tax increase even started to be collected etc.

Republicans are constantly spoon fed lies and you blindly accept them. Gilmore bankrupting Virginia, extending the Bush Tax cuts as being a “Tax cut” rather than an economic neutral after that many years of being in place, you even let them tell you what color your party is. It isn’t red! It is blue! Please google “Reagan’s sea of blue”. Research which colors stand for right vs. Left all over the world. At least some of you rejected that BS about ” jobs saved or created”. Yea……..prove a negative. Prove that ANY legislation didn’t “save” a job in a direct or indirect way. I couldn’t believe they stooped so low to use such a transparent spin/arguement.

Kinda reminds me of that other post about catching pigs and gradually fencing them in.
    Ok…..rant over.
