Blue Virginia wants Bob Marshall dead
By Brian Schoeneman | Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 | Policy
How many times have we seen the leftist blogosphere spin themselves into a crazed, frothing frenzy over something written on a conservative blog that was intended as a joke? Pretty often. And how often are conservatives told all we care about are the politics of fear and personal destruction, that we wish our political enemies dead? Again, pretty often. So I had to say I was struck by the callous disregard for human life that passes for humor over on Blue Virginia.
This morning, Lowell Feld posted his Monday news roundup, and included a photo of Delegate Scott Surovell on top of Huyana Picchu, a mountain in Peru that looms over Machu Picchu, the famed Incan lost city. Instead of just remarking how beautiful the site is – and the photo is pretty amazing - Lowell had to throw in a jab at Delegate Bob Marshall.
“Some would say Scott has his “head in the clouds,” but I just wish we could send a few other delegates – “Sideshow Bob” Marshall springs to mind – to Peru, drop him in the Amazon somewhere, and let him find his own way home…slowly!
”
I don’t know about the rest of you, but the idea of Delegate Bob Marshall – a 66 year old man – being dropped off in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, one of the least populated areas of the entire country and home to a number of native tribes that have had little contact with the outside world, sounds like a death sentence to me. While I am confident he’d go down fighting, there is no rational way he could survive “finding his way home…slowly” from something like that happening. So, in effect, Lowell has basically just said he wants Bob Marshall dead.
Why? Probably because of Marshall’s ridiculous stance on the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, where Marshall has suggested that the General Assembly bar gay troops from serving in the National Guard. It seems that in Lowell’s world, suggesting that gays not serve in the military warrants the death penalty. Since Lowell seems to think that “bigots, xenophobes, and extremists” don’t have to be treated as if they’re “decent members of polite society” we can just condemn them to death in jungle.
But wait! How can I take what he said seriously? He used a smiley after the statement! It was obviously a joke! Right?
Hey – if you think it’s funny to suggest killing off members of the legislature you don’t agree with, then sure, I guess it’s funny. And I recognize that I’m clearly being snarky here, but as I and others have noted, Blue Virginia likes to play by its own rules – where namecalling, banning of dissent, suggesting the death of those who disagree, and willfully misconstruing every action taken by Republicans (that’s “Rethugs” for you Blue Virginia fans here to condemn my lack of a sense of humor) is the name of the game, and actually engaging in meaningful debate isn’t on the agenda.
There are a lot of folks that me, J.R., Brian Kirwin, Shaun and the rest of the contributors here at Bearing Drift don’t like on the Democratic side of the aisle. But you will never see one of us stoop so low as to wish death on them simply because we disagree with a policy position. Perhaps because we are decent members of polite society, we recognize those kinds of sentiments are inappropriate.
Lowell should be ashamed of himself. But, of course, he won’t be. In fact, I’m sure he’ll respond by accusing me of defamation again. Some things never change.
UPDATE: Lowell apparently believes that Bob Marshall is a “repressed homosexual.” Specifically, he said “If Bob Marshall isn’t a repressed homosexual then nobody is.”
So if Bob is actually gay, as Lowell is alleging, would Lowell’s suggestion that he be killed be a hate crime?

Actually, it seems to me that it is the right that would hope he loses soon. He is a constant source of amusement, especially when the Governor has to issue his rebukes. I suspect most Virginians would prefer not to be the laughing stock of the nation every time he issues another missive.
As a right-wing nut, I’m still waiting for the first time he wanted to sue us. It seems you are doing a very good job of inching us closer to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Or, perhaps he can just wish us to be dropped 500 miles off the coast of Virginia and swim our way slowly back to shore.
Barrett – yeah, you’re right, for once.
Seems kind of timid compared to all sorts of things I read at various other sites. Probably not their finest hour, though.
If BD is going to set the new standard I’ll be interested to see what changes and what doesn’t. Should be interesting.
Lowell does seem a little over the top about the latest Marshall story.
and overly fond of calling people he doesn’t agree with “stupid.”
I know both Bob McDonnell and Bob Marshall. Neither of them is “stupid” Marshall is a little obsessive about topics relating to all areas of human sexuality, but he’s not stupid. And McDonnell, even though I disagree with the way he does things at times, is a very bright guy.
Now, Sarah Palin? She’s stupid;-)
I just wrote a post over at Common Sense condemning Marshall for this latest nonsense. I feel bad doing it, because he’d been on a roll for the last few months in getting it right.
I’m no opponent to gay rights, but I can’t understand why so many on the left want to turn this issue into some kind of life and death struggle where the other side has no rational thoughts and is simply pure evil. I guess its easier to wish death on opponents you think are evil than to simply acknowledge that they hold a different opinion, no matter how odious you think it is.
But hey, I guess that’s what makes me different from Lowell. I pity him. I don’t hate him.
SV,
I don’t agree with Sarah Palin, but I certainly agree with your assessment. Did you see Caribou Barbie’s latest assault on Michelle Obama? What’s next, attacking the family dog for crapping on the White House lawn?
As for Lowell Feld, well you just have to consider the source. Any preacher who only allows the choir inside his church cannot be taken seriously.
HR: Well, I have to say that I used to enjoy commenting at Raising Kaine and there used to be modicum of debate allowed, some free-wheeling discussions, as we have here and at Common Sense. And, to be non-partisan, NLS. But I stopped commenting on Blue Virginia for a long while because it had become an echo chamber. I stared again recently and I do feel that there are some valuable discussions there…Paul Goldman’s posts come to mind. But just calling people stupid, or gay, because you disagree with them on a political issue…that’s a kind of bigotry as well. And it does pop up in the Republican blogosphere as well. We’ve seen comments here about how all Democrats are this or all Democrats are that…that fall to the same level of mindless name calling that Brian is quite rightly taking Lowell to task for.
Oh, c’mon, Steve. We’d ~never~ do that here at BD.
As for where to go for good conversations from the left, you have to include Waldo Jaquith and Vivian Paige on that roster from the left as well. They are very good at what they do and are a credit to blogging in general.
JR- I certainly agree about Vivian and Waldo. Although, to tell you the truth I’m usually more interested in the non-political stuff Waldo posts than the politics.
“As for Lowell Feld, well you just have to consider the source…”
Agreed.
I’m having a rather testy exchange with Lowell right now about whether Bob Marshall can merely be “wrong” or if he must be a “bigot” or “latently gay”…apparently if you disagree with Lowell on this issue you must be both.
about Bob Marshall: we can credit him with many positive achievements. But within the concept of “picking your battles”, he picked the wrong one.
Lowell apparently has SCIENTIFIC PROOF that Marshall must be gay. Go figure.
Yeah, Brian I saw that. I’d say that’s right up there with the level of science you usually get from creationists.
If Saturday Night Live did a spoof of political blogs, it would look a lot like Blue Virginia. Lowell would probably be played by Bill Hader with Bobby Moynihan doing a cameo appearance by Ben Tribbett.
The Dems have all kinds of people even more unwise and unpleasant than Mr Marshall. Some of them work or have worked for the Obama Admin. The difference is that the Left media is efficient at ignoring, minimizing, excusing and isolating their miscreants. For example, do all the corrupt Dem congresspeople lead the Left media to castigate the “swamp” under Pelosi. No way. Just good boys and girl who made a mistake, you swine.
Well, I guess if you are going to say that…”The difference is that the Left media is efficient at ignoring, minimizing, excusing and isolating their miscreants…” you must be honest enough to say the same about the Right Media as well.
I find extremely humorous Lowell’s claim that Marshall “must be gay.” In our upside down world, where wrong is touted as right, and socialism is touted as freedom, it’s little surprise.
Who, I wonder, is more likely to be a homosexual? The person who advocates for gay so-called “rights”? Or the guy who’s standing up for the values of 5000 years of civilized society?
“Repressed homosexual” is one of the gay activists favorite ways to respond to someone who is unwilling to celebrate their lifestyle. I’ve heard it used on Bob Marshall, Dick Black, Eugene Delgaudio, Jerry Falwell, and more than a few others. Seriously? Is that the best Lowell & company can do for a response?
DCH: I agree.
Although I have to say that in the case of the late Rev. Falwell, that was encouraged by the fact he was sort of effiminate.
I don’t mean he was gay..but if you grew up in the South you recognize the type ….a little too much mama and a little too much Jesus combined with too little football and too little beer… turns out your soft spoken Southern sissy. Lindsey Graham is cut from the same cloth.
