Open Thread: 2nd (Update 7 p.m. – Polls Closed)
By JR Hoeft | Monday, November 1st, 2010 | PoliticsContributors to Bearing Drift will use this thread to update you on what we’re hearing regarding the 2nd Congressional District campaign in Virginia between incumbent Democrat Glenn Nye and Republican Scott Rigell.
Check this post frequently throughout the day for updates.

Update 7 p.m.: Polls are now closed in Virginia. Check out our live-blog of election results and projections; photos, interviews, speechifying. Don’t forget, when you use the hashtag #vpod your tweet will appear in the liveblog too.
Update: 5:15 p.m. Still phone banking at Rigell HQ:

Update 3:05 p.m. (Statement from the Rigell Campaign):
“We feel great about the energy and momentum that we’re seeing across the Second District for Team Rigell today. Scott visited with voters at numerous precincts this mornings and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. It’s crystal clear that voters agree with Scott’s positive message, and desperately want a check and balance on Washington.”
Update 2:52 p.m.: Eastern Shore precincts showing huge turnout.
Update 2:45 p.m. (Tweet from Ben Tribbett – Not Larry Sabato):
“I don’t have answers 4 u on #va05, #va09 or #va11 based on turnout. #va02 is a disaster for Dems, and looks like a dbl-digt win for R’s.“
Update 2:25 p.m. (From Susan Mariner – chairman of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee via Glenn Nye on Facebook):
“Virginia Beach Democrats should head over to 5101 Cleveland Street to volunteer. We’ll be working all the way to 7pm! Come help.”
Hmm…last minute plea for help?
Upldate 1 p.m. (From the Rigell Campaign) Another stop on the campaign trail (Kempsville Rec Center). Voter turnout has been outstanding.
Update 12:20 p.m. Voting at Pembroke Elementary – 614 voters through so far. One interesting thing to note – the Republican volunteers were handing out two “sample ballots”. One in yellow that said “Republican Sample Ballot” had only Scott Rigell on it, authorized by the 2nd Congressional District Republican Committee. The second in green had Bob McDonnell’s endorsed candidates for elected office, paid for and authorized by City Councilman Glenn Davis.
Update 11:24 a.m.Scott and Teri Rigell talking to a voter (Thanks, Will!)
Update 10:30 a.m.: Our first image of the day from the 2nd. (Thanks, Coby!)
Update 9 a.m.: Both Rigell and Nye appeared on Steve Batton’s morning radio show on Freedom 1650. Both sounded optimistic. Nye thinks late deciders are breaking his direction. Rigell voted earlier this morning around 8:15 a.m. and said he expects to see a final outcome between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. tonight. He spoke about how surreal it felt to see his name on the ballot as an average businessman and job creator.

When this is all over I would really like to find out what can be done to those responsible for the mailers and now robocalls (I’ve gotten two thus far) that don’t identify who is doing or paying for them. The unidentified mailers and now two unidentified robocalls have been pro Kenny and clearly they are targeting republican primary voters.
I can’t argue the strategy is a anything but masterful but when you don’t identify who is responsible or paying you cross the line. Likely democrat dirty politics and I predict this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Good Luck Scott… You have my vote.
Voted in Green Run at 6:30. 3 voting machines down and I was number 11 for Q through Z. No waiting.
20 minute line at the polling place at 745am, moderately large turnout. Good to see many men in the line as they tend to vote more conservative as a group;
Scott Rigell and Jeff Waters were greeting voters on their way in to the school.
Voted at the Edwin precinct around 9am. Was the 404th person to vote with about 20 people behind me. No Nye people at all, nor signs. Of course GOP was there in force and Henley and Erb (City Council) were there greeting people as well.
Voted at the Library precinct in Hampton at about 8:45. Rigell and Nye both had campaign workers there, but a lot more Rigell signs out front-Dont know how much difference that makes. Library tends to vote R in presidential elections and democrat the rest of the time but is usually close. Passed the burbank precint on the way to work and saw many Rigell and a few Wittman signs out front (split precinct) but no Nye signs.
Full Disclosure-I voted for Nye but would be comfortable with either as a congressman.
I voted at Red Mill Elementary at 6 AM. Poll workers were professional, organized and courteous. It should be a good day.
Voted at Cape Henry precinct at 6:00 AM; stayed ’till 8:30 AM to work the poll for Jim Wood. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and even opposed poll workers got along well. Never heard one cross word about Jim nor Barbara Henley; hope both are reelected.
Voted at Eastern Shore around 7:45AM there was a table of GOP lit but no one at the table.
I voted in Norfolk, Hampton and VB. In each place I voted for Rigell. Poll workers were excellent and convincing. Go Scott go.
Ron, are you chairman of the Hampton Roads conservative chapter of Acorn?
Ron is a man of many hidden talents.
Yes, I am.
BTW – Fox 43 has arrived at Rigell’s victory partry hq. 10, 13 and 3 – well, maybe 3, will be here as well. Expecting BBC, FOX and Sky News as well.
…and Bearing Drift.
[...] based on turnout. #va02 is a disaster for Dems, and looks like a dbl-digt win for R’s.” Bearing Drift also received a note from the Rigell campaign saying, “We feel great about the energy and [...]
Is the Democratic Party providing a few poll workers for the Kenny Golden campaign?
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Paul Shanks, Bearing Drift, Bearing Drift, Daniel Morgan, Jen and others. Jen said: RT @bearingdrift: Just got a statement from the Rigell campaign regarding #va02: http://ow.ly/33lmr #vpod [...]
Eastern Shore Chapel- no Nye signs near door, no Nye people. I worked the table this afternoon- steady trickle.
I worked the polls in VB next to Eileen Levandoski, co-host of vbdems.org down here. She was only handing out campaign lit to voters for one local City Council candidate.
I asked her where the Nye literature was. She told me she held her nose to vote for him, but she couldn’t hold her nose long enough to hand out his materials to voters.
I take that as a good omen for the Rigell campaign. Ha. Ha ha. Ha ha ha.
Rigell Henley score a landslide in Pungo..
Paul M. are you kidding about Dem poll workers there helping Kenny? Too funny!
The pro Kenny mailers and phone calls that don’t identify who paid for them really bother me. Does it bother you?
Would like to point out that Jessica Sandlin got a higher percentage of the vote then Kenny did. What does that mean?
Scott did a great job tonight and I really liked when he said republican’s care just as much as the Dems when it comes to the poor, minorities and the environment. Just reminds me the race for 2012 just started.
Last but not least I only got a few paper cuts this election cycle… No stitches this year!
David, yes, I was kidding about the Dems hiring poll workers for Kenny Golden, but after all, Kenny was the Dems best hope to pull out a win for Glenn Nye. It’s so great to see that Kenny’s arrogance and selfishness didn’t cost us the election…Kenny’s 4% of the vote turned out to not make the difference, thankfully.
Jessica Sandlin, Scott Taylor, Ben Loyola, and Bert Mizusawa were all great sports for supporting the nominee.
