Is Jeff Clark a Democratic Plant?
By | Friday, October 29th, 2010 | Videos

In addition to the very well done video by Stink Bug Productions, GOP Fifth Congressional District Chairman Bill Stanley offered up this challenge to Clark:

Conservatives all across Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District have received numerous mailers from the Democratic Party of Virginia that tout independent candidate Jeff Clark as the “true social and fiscal candidate” in this upcoming congressional election. It is clear that the Democratic Party of Virginia has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on these mailers.

These mail pieces are a blatant and failed attempt by the Democratic Party of Virginia and Tom Perriello’s political machine to siphon off votes of social and fiscal conservatives and members of our local Tea Party groups for Republican Robert Hurt in favor of Jeff Clark. It is also clear that the Democrats do not believe that their candidate is strong enough to win re-election based on his own record, and that they wrongly believe that social and fiscal conservatives here in the 5th District are so naive as to allow the Democratic Party to tell us who to vote for on November 2nd. Conservatives know that a vote for Jeff Clark is a vote for Tom Perriello and the political machine of Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi.

Today I call on Independent candidate Jeff Clark to either rebuke the Democrat’s use of him as a shill for Tom Perriello, or to openly thank the Democratic Party of Virginia for these Pro-Clark mail pieces and to report these mailers as “in-kind” contributions on his federal campaign finance filing Reports.

Conservatives all over the 5th District of Virginia will not be fooled by political stunts such as these so late in the campaign, and we will stand together this November 2nd to defeat Tom Perriello and elect Robert Hurt as our next Congressman.

This is about as bad as Connaughton’s “Bowling for Bolling” ad portraying the Lt. Gov. waddling down the alley, though it does win for Best Portrayal of a Stink Bug in a Political Ad.

Of course, this now puts to bed any idea that Clark is a sideshow if people are putting resources like this into tearing him down. Maybe it was worth debating the guy and letting him bow out after all?

Way too much defense out of Hurt right now. If Hurt wins, it won’t be because of his campaign efforts, that’s for sure. Stunts like these make me awful nervous…

shaun, Clark will not be a factor.

but I do wonder (just for wonderment’s sake) why Jeff Clark, who probably is conservative in real life, would let the DPVa put out ads on his behalf/or let himself be used to promote the candidacy of Perriello.

    Kelley,
    You’re exactly right.

I thought the video was amusing, so I put it up with this post – but the video should not be the focus.

The focus is Bill Stanley calling on Clark to either condemn these DCCC and DPVA mailers and ads or accept them for what they are: helping his campaign.

After all, I will give this to Kenny Golden, he at least acknowledged that he appreciated the DCCC ads.

    @kelley –

    I really, really hope not.

If this is because someone’s looking at a poll and thinks it needs to be done, I’m worried. If this is just to poke Clark in the eye — why on God’s green earth bother 96 hours before the election when there’s so much more that needs to get done?!?

  5. Shaun Kenney October 29, 2010 14:31 pm

…and with the DPVA ads, they genuinely believe we’re that stupid in VA-05. Genuinely. Whether Clark OK’d the piece is doubtful, but you and I both know there was a wink and a nod behind it.

i think they are “poking” Jeff Clark because they (RH campaign) wants to beat Perriello by x% without the 3d party vote factoring in. Though Clark’s small % will not factor in the win/loss issue.

Kelley I just had a long talk with a long time Democrat and he told me the problem Perriello has is the indy’s that voted for him last time are not voting for him this time.

  9. kelley in virginia October 29, 2010 16:23 pm

Will, I agree. And we’ve got the enthusiasm on our side.

That’s what I’m seeing, too. It seems that Perriello’s only chances are: a.) Split the conservative vote by promoting Jeff Clark (which, according to SurveyUSA, doesn’t appear to be working) or b.) Change the likely voter profile by turning out more Democrats–attempting to replicate 2008 turnout. Without the missing piece of the Obama independents, I just don’t see that happening.

  11. kelley in virginia October 29, 2010 17:31 pm

jason, the turnout model just won’t hunt for them in 2010.

Perriello has been to black churches. He has been to academic sites. But when he runs his 1,000 TV/radio ads, it is not the same as when Obama ran them in ’08 with his arms outstretched like he was Moses on Mt. Sinai saying we are from a new America, blah, blah & yes, we can, gurgle, gurgle.

It pokes fun at the fact that that DPVA sent mailers out on behalf Independent Jeff Clark, and any vote for Clark is a vote for Periello. It also raises the question of how the D.P.V.A views the intelligence of the voting base in the 5th district. I agree with Bill Stanley’s request for Jeff Clark to either thank the Democratic Party for their support of him or rebuke it for what it is, an unwilling pawn in Periello’s last ditch effort to save a job he has failed at.

This doesn’t seem to be a brand new trick by the Dems. The same stunt has been pulled in VA-2 with Kenny Goldman and before that, in the GOP primary in the 1st CD for ding-bat Crabill. The Dems don’t seem to realize they have their candidates which they themselves nominated. Maybe they do realize that, and can’t bring themselves to elect them. Absolutely insulting to the electorate. Doesn’t it gall some of you to know that a political party can’t even support their own nominees for office and think they can trick you like this? Shameless. Or shameful. Or both. Oh, I cannot wait until Nov. 2nd.
