Rep. Owen Pickett has passed away
By JR Hoeft | Thursday, October 28th, 2010 | Catch-AllRep. Owen Pickett, 80, member of the House of Delegates from 1972-1986 and congressman from Virginia’s 2nd District from 1987-2001 has passed away.
From Gov. Bob McDonnell:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend Owen Pickett. Owen dedicated his life to public service. He was a patriot. He served the Commonwealth in the House of Delegates and our nation in the House of Representatives. That was his passion: service. That passion was evident when in August he accepted my offer to Co-Chair our Commission on Military and National Security Facilities. Even in his final months, knowing that his health was failing, Owen volunteered to once again serve the people of Virginia. I will miss Owen Pickett, we all will. He knew what he believed in and he was committed to his ideals. He loved the Second District, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the United States of America. On behalf of all Virginians I offer my deepest sympathies to his family and his many, many friends during this tough time. Owen Pickett will be missed.”

I met Mr. Picket on several occasions at ODU functions relating to the alternative energy systems project that I was involved with and other natural gas vehicle activities here at the beach. He was a great guy and the 2nd was fortunate to have the man. He was also a solid supporter of advanced energy technology development in general and his record of support for energy independence in the early 90′s helped launch my carreer..
Godpseed Mr. Pickett
A true Virginia gentleman, Mr. Pickett was. I was saddened to hear of his passing.
Yes, he was an incredible representative, one who was both approachable and intelligent. When we got through earlier BRAC processes, he was a key facilitator in bringing Hampton Roads together on a regional plan, and he involved both the public and the private sectors. He really understood how important it was to be inclusive in that regard. His fiscal conservatism and support for the military was clear every day he served in Congress. Before that, he as a go to guy in the state legislature. Wonderful man!
Mike, in 1993 Mr. Pickett cast the deciding vote in favor of the largest tax increase in American history and voted many times for massive increases in federal spending. Is every Democratic politician you ever met a fiscal conservative?
Mr. Pickett was a decent man who genuinely cared about his constituents and Virginia.
Yes Ron, I certainly agree with your last sentence.
For me, anti tax and fiscal conservative are not the same thing. Since the federal budget grew rapidly during Ronald Reagan’s term, perhaps you would agree.
It’s obvious that Mike Barrett makes up definitions of phrases and words to suit his own purposes.
Oh and Mike, Reagan had to deal with massive Democratic majorities in the House. It is a miracle he got his tax cuts and tax reforms through. And he also raised the federal gas tax, which I appreciate. I don’t understand why some politicians rail against the gas tax – its the ultimate user fee.
