Golden announces press conference for Friday
By | Monday, September 20th, 2010 | Politics

Independent, one-time Republican, and congressional candidate for the 2nd District, Kenny Golden has announced a press conference for Friday, 5:30 p.m. BD will be there.

The announcement from Golden is intentionally vague:

Kenny will make an announcement regarding his campaign and then take questions from the press and general public.

Let the speculation begin.

Update: Why would Golden choose late on a Friday afternoon to make this announcement? Typically that’s where news goes to die.

I noticed a lack of Capt. Golden yard signs and 4 x 8′s. I know he was saving up for the big push. Could this either be the kick-off or the announcement he is taking his hat out of the ring?

    Let the speculating begin!

He may be posturing, but I think he’s going to finish up his race here. If he is dropping out, the question would be of his support for Rigell.

  3. Brian Schoeneman September 20, 2010 15:10 pm

It would be great to see him drop out here and throw his support to Rigell. I think that would be the honorable thing to do. But who knows. Maybe he’s unveiling a new logo for his campaign. That seems to be important enough for a press conference nowadays.

If Golden drops out, 2rd district voters will be left with a choice of a RNC puppet or a DNC puppet. Neither one will get my vote.

if he charges $10 to every media person there, he would raise enough money for strong finish

  7. Coby W. Dillard September 20, 2010 17:08 pm

Kenny was out at TCC today talking to students…and nothing I saw/heard from him gave the impression of a man about to drop out.

  8. itson September 20, 2010 20:30 pm

Kenny will do the right thing move to support Rigell time to come home

  9. Henry Ryto September 20, 2010 21:49 pm

If Golden was going to withdraw, holding the Press Conference at 5:30 P.M. on a Friday would make little sense. Saturday is the slowest newspaper day of the week, it doesn’t make the evening news unless the TV stations send their remote trucks to go live, etc.

    Possible, but why then?

Hopefully Golden has seen the light and is stepping out of the race. For someone with no money and no chance of winning, he’s stayed in remarkably long. Hopefully he’ll throw his support behind Rigell, who has run an incredibly effective and uplifting campaign so far. This would be the best thing Golden could do for the country he served for so long.

I think Kenny needs to ask himself about his goals. If his goal is to remove Glenn Nye from office, Kenny should drop out now because Scott Rigell is more than capable of ensuring that. Kenny, by his own admission, has no money and no organization (can’t believe he actually said that to the Daily Press). I’ll bet Kenny’s congressional campaign – such as it is – is coming at a high personal price tag. Kenny may be sincere, but I hope that he sees the light and drops out of the race. I fully expect Scott Rigell to win the election even if Golden is in the race, but it would be a shame if it’s a close election and the few Golden votes end up giving Nye another two – or perhaps indefinite – years in office.

Henry, are you really applying atypical political rules to that campaign? Have you seen ANYTHING they’ve done so far?

I think Turbo’s silence on this speaks louder than anything right now…hint hint

  13. James "turbo" Cohen September 21, 2010 08:20 am

DJ, the future looks grim. There ya go.

  14. Brian W. Schoeneman September 21, 2010 08:28 am

Well, that’s confirmation enough for me. Good job, Golden.

  15. Brian Kirwin September 21, 2010 08:50 am

The past looked grim. The present is grim. What’s new about any of this?

  16. Brad Martin September 21, 2010 10:00 am

    Why 5:30 on Friday?

Kenny probably heard that George Allen is speaking at the RPVB breakfast on Saturday morning, and he wants to show up as the returning hero that he is and always will be (seriously, no sarcasm intended).

  17. Bryan Stuart September 21, 2010 11:16 am

It would be a nice gesture by Golden and restore some of his reputation if he does gracefully bow out.

  18. Arnie September 21, 2010 11:40 am

I hope Kenny Golden is announcing the kickoff of his final push. Maybe he even has a big contribution from a national name to unveil. But I don’t think he is going to drop out. Not a chance.

I saw him at a recent town hall and he did not look like a man who was going to drop out.

Golden is a man who sticks to principle. And he’ll ride those principles all the way to Election Day, 2010.

  19. Jo September 21, 2010 12:11 pm

If Kenny drops out it is unlikely he will support Rigell. He’s said many times he likes Nye as a person, but not his vote for speaker.
I do know that the Town Hall previous scheduled for Friday has been cancelled. Guess we will all have to wait and see.

  20. JP September 21, 2010 12:33 pm

I just don’t see Golden dropping out. I am siding with Arnie, that Kenny perhaps has a big name endorsement or contribution to publicize.

I’d like to see Kenny win — he’s the only one of the three that I believe won’t get pushed around on Capitol Hill.

  21. B. Woodfin September 21, 2010 12:51 pm

Just drove by Golden’s HQ on my way to work on Holland Rd. All his 4×8 signs were down in front of the shopping center. I’ve also noticed a few other signs elsewhere that have come down. Looks like this may be the end.

Anyone know if the Rigell camp is actively pursuing an endorsement? If I were them I’d be flooding Golden’s office with phone calls from volunteers and supporters. Kenny seems pretty stubborn, I can’t seem him endorsing Nye, but I can definitely see him staying quiet.

Maybe we should all start a letter/phone call/email campaign, maybe even some letters to the editor. It would be a shame for local politics to lose someone like Kenny because he got totally fed up with the process. He is obviously going to drop out, the Rigell camp needs to meet him halfway with some kind of moral support.

  22. Justin Conaughton September 21, 2010 14:00 pm

Per insiders at fort Golden it sounds like Kenny will announce his endorsement of Nye at his press conference. Nye signs are already going up nearby. The GOP has screwed the pooch in the manner in which they treated KG during the primary and moreso since then. The GOP of this state and localy conducted themselves poorly with a total lack of respect. Look at how they treated the young dem tracker and now the dems have it all over youtube.
The GOP has champagne aspirations but trailer trash ethics and vile manners around their opponent.

Way to Go Kenny but this spells doom if Nye wins.

  23. Brad Martin September 21, 2010 14:01 pm

I like Nye as a person, I even like a lot of the votes he’s cast. The ones I don’t like, I almost understand his vote. Even his vote for Pelosi as Speaker (what’s a freshman rep supposed to do, on his second day in office?).

But this election, more than any other in my voting experience, is all about replacing D’s with R’s. The primary is behind us, folks. Any issues with Rigell’s positions on individual issues are insignificant compared to the fact that he has an (R) after his name. This is probably the only election I would ever say this, but Golden simply must support Rigell, if for nothing other than his (R). If he drops out.

  24. Mike Barrett September 21, 2010 15:34 pm

Well Brad, for me, this election is about the future; do we continue the recovery, do we increase jobs and opportunity for workers, do we retain protection from health care insurers, do we move forward by investing in infrastructure, or alternately, do we favor the wealthy wall street firms, the international conglomerates with insider deals, tax breaks, and the failed and repudiated trickle down economics. That is what this election is about, and I for one hope only to see the failed policies of the last administration in the rear view mirror.

  25. Brad Martin September 21, 2010 15:41 pm

Enough with the platitudes, Mike. I’m no great fan of the Bush 43 administration. How can you justify a budget that borrows 40% of the money we spend?

  26. Mike Barrett September 21, 2010 16:16 pm

I can’t, long term. In fact, the only time rational leaders do that is to prime the pump after a fiscal collapse. Soon, going forward, the fiscal discipline of the Clinton/ Republican Congress partnership on pay go must be restored. But I would never confuse that with the irrational exhuberance of the Bush years that brought us so close to fiscal ruin. Timing is everything, and soon, we must curtail spending by restoring discipline in Congress.

  27. Doug M. September 21, 2010 16:53 pm

Mr. Conaughton, I get that this is rumor.

But if that is what goes down Friday, I find it hard for Golden to recover, politically, anytime soon, if ever.

Golden himself said in that first debate with Rigell at the RPVB Breakfast all those months ago that Scott made a mistake, and that a Conservative Republican would NEVER, EVER, EVER support a democrat financially.

But actively campaigning for one? Jeeze.

In addition, if Golden has, say in matter of discussion, 10 voters, how many of those will be voting for Nye, really?

And where is Turbo at? I am sure you can’t disclose the nature of the presser, but you can say this Nye rumor is crazy, I hope.

  28. Darrell -- Chesapeake September 21, 2010 17:23 pm

Replacing D’s with R’s. Is that what this is all about? Why bother to vote if we simply trade one party hack for another?

  29. Brad Martin September 21, 2010 17:31 pm

I’m not in favor of trading “one party hack for another”, nor do I agree that you’ve accurately described a Nye versus Rigell race (I wouldn’t classify either as a “party hack”).

It’s not what this is all about, but that’s the choice we’ll have if Golden drops out of the race. And in this election, the most important thing is that the Democrat majority in Congress is broken. Period. You bother to vote because this country and its citizens can’t stand another two years of this president with his party in the majority of both houses of Congress.

  30. D.J. Spiker September 21, 2010 18:01 pm

I’ll believe Kenny endorsing Nye when I see it…to throw away everything would be the epitome of throwing away all your principles and committing political suicide.

  31. Kenny Golden September 22, 2010 01:59 am

All, and DJ, You are correct my Friend, that I could not do. Rigell either for that matter but the announcement is a very positive one and I’m very proud of it. Come and have a coke. JR, I’d love to see you in you can make it. r Kenny

  32. KATIE smiley September 22, 2010 02:44 am

I would like to have a coke with you, Kenny Golden.

  33. Lynn22 September 22, 2010 23:41 pm

    My prediction…

Kenny is not going to drop out, but yet have some sort of announcement that brings free advertising to his campaign.

Now, I would love to see him come back to the party, but I don’t see him as someone who would go backwards. Please correct me if I am wrong Mr. Golden.

I also don’t see him backing Rigell, after everything I have heard, or read. But hey, people surprise me every single day, especially in this race.

The Allen theory above is great and would be epic, I may make the trip to VB! Hint, hint Kenny.

  34. D.J. Spiker September 23, 2010 00:23 am

Free advertising would be a press conference being held at non take out the trash time, not at 5:30 on a Friday when no one cares or pays attention

  35. Lynn22 September 23, 2010 13:48 pm

True, but everyone is talking about it now.

  36. Scott September 23, 2010 15:32 pm

Maybe it’s a Ron Paul-esque endorsement. That or dropping out seem to be the only thing that makes sense.

  37. D.J. Spiker September 23, 2010 15:47 pm

    Lynn,

‘everybody’ on BearingDrift? Cause few others are. BD exists in a vacuum.

    33 comments. That’s a TON of people!

  38. James "turbo" Cohen September 23, 2010 16:02 pm

    Watching the news DJ?

  39. Brad Martin September 24, 2010 22:13 pm

    Well??? What happened???

  40. Bryan Stuart September 24, 2010 22:45 pm

Whatever happened, what political genius thought it was a good idea to hold a press conference at 5pm on a Friday demonstrates that they have zero experience in dealing with the media.

What a second, I guess it was the same political geniuses that came up with the absurd “Who is Kenny Golden” signs.
