Rick Boucher buys car with campaign dollars
By Alan Moore | Thursday, September 16th, 2010 | PoliticsReally? Do I even need to explain how incompetent this is? From the Morgan Griffith campaign:
Internet bloggers reported this morning the incumbent had purchased a luxury automobile via his campaign fund. The purchase is listed on the Federal Election Commission website:
http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/dcdev/forms/C00178418/448475/sb/ALL
“At a time when people are struggling to pay their bills, no congressman should be purchasing a new car with campaign contributions,” says Griffith. “Rick Boucher should be able to purchase a car himself with his $174,000 congressional salary.”
According to campaign finance reports, the vehicle cost his congressional campaign $29,352.17, which is just under the $34,506 mean income for residents of the district. (Reference: Almanac of American Politics; U.S. Census Data.)
Griffith also echoed his request from last week calling on Congress to cut their pay by 10 percent or roughing $17,300.
He says the people of southwest Virginia are having a hard time making ends meet, while our Congressional leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Rick Boucher are setting back and enjoying grandiose salaries. “If Pelosi and Boucher cannot live on $155,700 a year (with the 10 percent pay cut), than they should go home. And no wonder we have a trillion dollar deficit.”

Alan: This certainly isn’t the smartest thing Rick Boucher’s ever done. But…the teaser for your story says he used “tax dollars”….campaign contributions aren’t tax dollars.
Decrying people’s salaries being too high? Isn’t this the type of mentality we’re supposed to be fighting?
If only there was a Bearing Drift contributor who has talked about politicains and cars, who once said,“No one is going to give you heartache in New Jersey for driving a Cadillac.” I wonder who this could be?
i’ve always liked Boucher’s hornrims. I so hope they are not a campaign expenditure.
Want to know what’s even more hypocritical?
Boucher voted for the auto bailout. But he bought a Ford, the company who didn’t take advantage of the bailout.
Ward nothing hypocrtical about him buying a Ford. It was his car of choice. However using campaign funds to buy it raises serious questions-is it only used for campaign purposes? Or is it his primary car? If the latter is he claiming the mileage as income or reimbursing the campaign etc.
Maybe he bought a clown car for his circus.
The late Stanley Walker could have told him how costly such a snafu would be politically.
Bad – now where is the BD piece on O’Donnell using campaign funds – after the campaign was over to pay for rent, bowling, drinks, gas…
