We Must Never Forget
By Ward Smythe | Saturday, September 11th, 2010 | Catch-AllSeptember 11, 2001 – Most of us remember exactly what we were doing when we first heard the word. I was reading the news on the Internet when I saw that the first plane had hit. At that point, we only assumed it was a small plane accident. Minutes later, we knew the difference.
As the events of the day unfolded, we said over and over that this changed us. Did it?
We said that life would never be the same again. Has it?
Is your life any different on this Saturday morning than it was on a Saturday morning before 9/11/01? Perhaps it is.
But I suspect that for many of us, the emotions of that day are a fading memory. Thanks to YouTube and Facebook, I’ve spent some time remembering the events of that day. Watching the painful images. Hearing the screams. Watching the bodies fall. Listening to the last seconds of desperate phone calls.
It’s painful to do. It’s also necessary.
We must never forget that on that day, we were all attacked by Muslim extremists who despise our very way of life. They wanted us dead. They still do.
Still, today is not the day to bicker about mosques and book burning. Today is the day to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day. And to remember the great courage and resolve with which we faced that crisis. We stood in lines to give blood for hours, even though no blood was needed. We gathered in houses of worship to pray. We cried, we sang “God Bless America.”
We raised the American flag in tribute. And in defiance.
And we stood together as Americans. In those early days race and religion didn’t matter. Politics didn’t matter. We knew what our values were. We knew who we were as a nation.
Do yourself a favor. Spend some time today remembering that.

You are right…while it is easy for us to forget…I found myself just recently watching a video of the events. In watching that video I was reminded that our nation was indeed attacked, and that the original American way was and is being threatened with destruction by the Islamists.
9 years since that horrible day, our thoughts and prayers are with the ones that lost loved ones that day. Your pain can never be erased, but we will never forget.
God Bless
