Democrats defend the Quran more than the American flag
By Brian Kirwin | Thursday, September 9th, 2010 | PolicyIt’s amazing to me to see Democrats get all upset about someone planning to burn a Quran, but have no problem with burning an American Flag.
I’m consistent. I think the idea for someone to burn either a Quran or an American flag is about the dumbest idea one could have. After attempts to ban flag burning failed, Louisiana passed a law lowering the fine for assaulting a flag burner to $25, and I had a nice, long chuckle. One city lowered it to $1.
Today’s chuckle is seeing these Democrats line up in outrage against a Quran burning after so passionately defending folks who burn the American flag.
President Barack Obama, who voted against a Constitutional Amendment to protect the American flag, is all against this Florida minister and his Quran burning plans.
Ditto Hillary Clinton who condemned the planned Quran burning but didn’t have any problem voting against protecting the American Flag from protest burning.
Wisconsin’s Sen. Russ Feingold, California’s Sen. Barbara Boxer, New York’s Chuck Schumer – all running for re-election this year, and all voted against Constitutionally-protecting the American Flag from burning.
No problem with flag burning – just don’t burn a Quran! There’s a campaign slogan!
Someone needs to ask these Democrats why flag burning is ok with them but Quran burning is not.
Media? Hello? Are you there?

I condemn both flag and Quran burning, but believe in the constitutional right to do both.
Wow, you’re an asshole. You just spit on the grave of every Democrat that died for this country.
How can you live with yourself?
Brian, it is absolutely amazing that you would abandon the Constitution and the Bill of Rights just to score political points. But of course, that is just what you do as a political tactician. Your attitudes and actions are what make me more proud every day of the courage and the guts of the framers who spoke out against the tyranny of the majority and realized just how imjportant it was to protect speech and religious freedom.
Score, Brian. Way to point out the hypocrisy of the left. They’re attacking you, because they can’t defend the indefensible. Not all speech – especially the inflammatory and obviously abusive kind – should be permitted in a free society.
Oh J.R., that’s classic; by making Brian the “victim” you attempt to engender sympathy for a guy who just abandoned our cherished values to gain political points. With patriots like Brian, who abandons the principles that protect us from the tyranny of the majority for political gain, blacks would still be enslaved, women would not have the vote, and anyone who is not a member of the current majority would be at risk. You guys need to step back and reevaluate.
Mike, does your health plan require a referral for mental health treatment, or can you go straight to the looney bin?
When all else fails, read the constitution.
I thought we were all concerned about the Quran burning because of the likely use of it by terrorists to fuel their anti-American fire, not because we are touchy about a holy book. The Taliban’s ability to use this as “proof” that Americans are trying to destroy Islam is the concern, as well as the safety of our troops if there is another rash of suicide bombings, etc.
I have to agree with Joel- I am against burning a Quran or a flag, but currently the Constitution says you can burn either or both. Some Republicans did vote against the amendment, and some Democrats voted for it the last time it came up in the Senate, and there was also the middle ground of a statute offered up (Hillary Clinton supported this option).
Mike, please explain your brain damage.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
James,
We’re all enamored with your great ability to cut and paste, as that seems to be your mo with comments.
Regardless, I see the word “peaceably” in that little phrase.
Burning something is incendiary – literally and figuratively. It’s meant to incite and anger. It’s not protest – it’s provocation.
And, Gray, I totally agree with you. A friend of mine is in an Islamic country right now and the media there is enraged by this.
My friend’s life is endangered because some Christian zealot is inflaming the Islamic zealots near my friend – as if they needed any more reason to target Americans.
Yes Brian, the media is there. Most would simply not stoop to the depth of depravity made manifest in your so called article.
Speaking of “mental health treatment”, where is the VBTA’s Vice Chairman/Chairman of No Transportation? He’s been MIA, probably getting drugged down with large doses of Thorazine.
This is not even a fair analogy. The correct analogy would be burning a Quran vs. burning a Bible. I don’t know any Democrats who would condone burning Bibles.
And I will concur that Brian’s original statement is a slap in the face to every Democrat who has served in our armed forces. What a dickish thing to say.
I think the heading could have been better phrased but it is obvious reading the text that Mr Kirwin was referring only to verbal and political defense of the Kuran vs flag. I find it interesting how often left wingers as in a couple of posts here are so quick to resort to vulgarity and word twisting to make their supposed point. I remember a time many years ago when Dems actually had a sense of humor and sense of proportion. Needless to say that time is long gone. Also the idea that if only we acted like Mary Poppins every thug in the world would love us is completely laughable. Our schools must be to blame because any decent text of world history would give the lie to that fantasy.
