Glenn Nye Gives Up Original Ad Plans, Hits Reset with New Ad
By D.J. Spiker | Friday, September 3rd, 2010 | PoliticsGlenn Nye’s campaign released their new ad today, virtually a complete 180 turn-around from their much (and justly) criticized first ad. Contrasted with Rigell’s ad, where Rigell spoke directly to the camera, Nye’s lame attempt at a first ad was all voiceover, with the requisite ‘I approved this ad’ at the conclusion. Rigell’s ad was far more personal, not to mention Nye’s ludicrous claim that he voted against the bailout, despite not being in office for the vote. Nye’s team apparently quickly realized they would lose the message battle (thankfully for them it came before Labor Day) and went with a new approach. Admittedly, far more effective then his first go around.

Very effective. It emphasizes local issues and local jobs. Notice it was in a kitchen, very homey. But, where is a woman in the ad? (a back of the head?)
“I’m Glenn Nye, and I’ll run an ad about how I’m losing jobs.”
It is a good ad. It doesn’t resonate with me, since the only two factors for the carrier issue (addressing at the Federal level) are what is right for national defense and what is right based on cost. I think that a good ad for him would be real footage of a townhall, with him stoutly defending his principles…
A town hall meeting is an informal public meeting. Everybody in a community is invited to attend, voice their opinions, and hear the responses from public figures and elected officials, although attendees rarely vote on an issue. In today’s heterogeneous communities with large populations, more often, town hall meetings are held so that people can influence elected officials in their decision making or to give them a chance to feel that their voices are being heard.
There are no specific rules or guidelines for holding a town hall meeting. If the turnout is large, and the objective is to give as many people as possible an opportunity to speak, the group can be broken down into smaller discussion groups. Participants all hear an opening presentation and then group-up to discuss an aspect of the presentation. Each group appoints someone to summarize discussion of their group.
Since I wonder if Nye and his supporters even KNOW what a town hall meeting is, thought that I would be nice and help them.

Talk about hyperpole; slam Nye for JFCOM, and give a senior member of Congress in whose district most of the command is located, Randy Forbes, a free pass. I guess that is the definition of partisanship.
Fact is, the Rigell I know well is a pragmatic and competent business leader who understands the need for Congress to quit with the obstructionism and get to work, but the candidate who must run to please the ideologues in the party hierarchy must dumb down his appeal to slamming and condemning. What a shame.
In reality, I could support a moderate, centrist candidate like the Rigell I knew, but now he owes his election to the party bosses and he must sing Cantor’s tune of obstructionism and amnesia about the deplorable conditions they created.
It is almost comical to see so called tea party members fawning over the country club attending, U.S. chamber of commerce loving, high net worth protecting, republican leaders in the House. So, you really think they will serve your interests? Give me a break.
Kingsmoothie,
On the carrier issue. While Mayport previously had carriers based there, not a single one was nuclear powered. The infrastructure does not presently exist to support a nuclear powered carrier in Mayport without great cost to place it there and increased annual costs to support it.
The argument to base carrier(s) in Mayport generally gets to the idea dispersal of forces is good for national defense. OK, if dispersal is such a good thing, why was the huge Charleston Naval Base closed down?
If money is not an object to national defense, then why is the closing of JFCOM being touted as such a great money saver?
Somebody up in the Dept of Defense needs to make up their mind. Either money is no object when it comes to national defense or cost savings is the goal. They can’t argue for both at the same time where each time our area pays the price.
Did anyone catch the live stream of the debate? Did you all notice how Nye was whining about Rigell running a “negative” attack?
Let’s see — Glenn Nye voted for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker: 100% Factually correct
Glenn Nye voted for the failed $800 Billion “stimulus” that included great projects like million dollar grants for honey farms and studies on grape genetics: FACT
This guy is clueless.
The first ad was weak and this one is weak. Glenn Nye is just a weak candidate. Nothing about him makes me want to follow him. Scott Rigell’s ad are strong and point out important things like…voting records! I’m looking forward to Nov. 2!
Actually, Glenn Nye, working in tandem with Forbes, Wittman, Scott, Warner, and Webb, has led the fight to retain the carrier and reverse the Navy’s decision. He has been commended and thanked by Governor McDonnell for his success in that role. Appropriations for needed modifications at Mayport have been removed from the federal budget, and since th GAO criticized the Navy for the non existence of a strategic threat assessment, it appears that the cooperative effort of all our congressional, state, and local has resulted in a long delay at worst, success at best.
Now this truthful rendition does not fit the republican playbook, so Nye must be vilified, Forbes exalted, McDonnell denied, for Rigell’s fairytale to hold an ounce of water.
For the current state of republican obstructionism, water must run uphill, trugh must be denied, and all republican politicians must be in the top 1%.
In other words, poppycock.
He is a weak candidate and a weak leader. Those are facts too. We can talk about this a hundred times, but the fact of the matter is that Nye is in office because of the Obama craze. Obama and Democrats are going to change the world…
Well, they sure did, and now Nye is trying to run on what? What is it exactly that he is going to do?
Unfortunately for him, it’s too late for him to do anything. I’m surprised that he’s still in the race. He’s done, and November can’t get here soon enough!
Both Rigell and Nye are like two peas in a pod, two weak candidates, lots of sugar available.. and the meek shall inherit the earth.. er congress.
If we had campaign finance rules that disallowed moneyed interests and enabled each candidate to stand on their own merit without undue financial advantage then this would be a more representative and relevant political race. Ad wars take money to wage, lots of it.
Money trumps experience in Hollywood and in Virginia’s second district as well.. Is this Not what the founders intended? The people deserve better.
Pop quiz: Which of the two independent candidates have experience in a live fire combat zone outside of the US? Does Rigell share this experience?.
James, do you frequently support socialism?
“If we had campaign finance rules that disallowed moneyed interests and enabled each candidate to stand on their own merit without undue financial advantage”
Oh, and town hall??? There is no way Nye could face the people in a townhall. Every time he gets the least bit frazzled, he turns beat red. He just doesn’t have the answers. Rigell’s townhall was some serious stuff. He took questions on everything, not just what he was prepared to answer. Well done for sure!
If Nye had a room full of people asking him about bp, rangel, pelosi, stimulus….he’d pass out.
Oh, and Mr. Military Glenn Nye, isn’t so Military after all. Total farce. I know Chiefs on every ship along the east coast, and they say over 80% of Sailors either haven’t heard of Nye, or think he’s a joke for parading around in cammies, like he’s some veteran or something. At this point, it’s the only thing Glenn has. The tide turned in the Navy/Mil community when former Second of the Navy Gordon England endorsed Rigell. If Nye is so good with the Mil, and in tune with our Navy, why didn’t he get the endorsement?
Rigell picks up endorsements from Flag and General officers because they believe in his ability to lead. The enlisted community is coming out in droves for Military round tables, spouse discussions, I mean, wow!
The only people Nye is talking with about Mil is other legislators. How about talking to the people you’re going to rep? Nye will NEVER be able to handle that.
Ha! A live fire zone? Don’t you dare pretend that Nye is some war hero. It’s a slap in the face to our fine men and women out in harms way. Nye had a cush job as a foreign service officer. A damn govt official job. Ask any marine, and soldier, out there risking it all, living in terrible conditions. They work tirelessly and risk their lives everyday. Any one will tell you what these officers get when they go over seas. It’s cush, they fly in, live in best places, get special treatment, and the military hates it because they have to put on a dog and pony show every time these twerps come in and want t play soldier.
So then you other statement, take away money etc from races, let candidates stand on their own merits, ok….scott rigell is a proven business leader, and has made a difference in this community for decades? He’s lead more people, created more jobs, and had a positive impact on more lives than Nye ever will. He’s older, more experienced, more passionate about our country, and knows what it takes to manage a growing, flourishing business, family,….ok the list goes on and on. Nye? Total joke.
And live fire experience? Don’t you dare pretend that Nye is some war hero. He was a foreign service officer, cush job, out there out there doing things to bolster a career in government, not a career in protecting our great nation. Ask any Marine, Soldier etc… These guys fly in, get the best living, food, etc, while the soldiers have to put on a dog and pony show for some guy playing hero. It’s disgusting, and a total disgrace. As for kenny’s experience, great. Whatever. Makes him qualified to lead in the Navy. Must not be overly qualified though, why didn’t he pick up Admiral?
Just saying.
And, if you want to talk some garbage about money and letting candidates run on their own merit…sure. Scott Rigell has been making an impact right here in hampton roads for 2 decades! He’s been here, with the people, creating jobs, raising a family, going to church,…the list goes on and on. Scott Rigell is a Hampton Roads man. He’s looked up to, and has given so much to this community. Nye?

Oh, that’s classic. Glenn Nye grew up in Norfolk, went to high school at Norfok Academy, and his family has been here for decades and Rigell famously arrived here a few years ago in a trailer with all his worldly possessions. If you are to believe the myths put out by the republican party machine, you must have a screw loose.
No Brian, my grandfather was the sole survivor of a family murdered by socialists and I have been on the warpath to expose the risk they present in America for longer than I have been politically active. Fortunately grandpa’s home was not a near miss, it was a direct hit and his parents and siblings likely died instantly which is more merciful than slowly burning to death or taking a Herr Goebells giftgas shower at a concentration camp. At the time he was a young boy living in what was polish, russian and german terroitory all at virtually the same time. His aunt found him hiding under a bench and they escaped the certain death that most of his remaining relatives he never saw or heard from again likely suffered at the hands of damned unmerciful fu_king socialists. As an America loving survivor, he instilled in me the blessing of this fine country and warned me that what happened where he was born could happen here if the economy collapsed and the government fell into hands of communism, socialism or facism.
Campaign finance rules currently allow nobody to run against a candidate when they self fund to the extent that the gop candidate has. This is not what the founders intended.
Rigell arrived here a few years ago? Sure. So Glenn’s merits of running are that he went to School here? LOL. Must be the reason he’s such a terrible Congressman. If that’s what you’re going with, good on ya. How many checks has Scott’s business paid out the the community over the past 20 years? He was supporting the local economy when Nye was building up his credentials…living here and going to the Norfolk Academy. Nice.
Well before everyone starts posting the lyrics and music links in support of their candidates, I will get mine in.
Fanny Lu – Tu No Eres Para Mi
The GOP candidate, Scott Rigell, is self funding because he believes in what he’s doing, believes in America, and has a strong calling towards servant leadership. All these silly haters on here, you have a problem with government? Why don’t you take your own family’s wealth and run for office. City council, school boards, anything. Rigell did well, ran an incredible business, one built on sound principles. Now he’s using his own hard earned money to get elected, so that he can continue to lead the people of Hampton Roads. Ya, that’s so bad. Whatever.
James, perhaps under Obama’s health care plan, you can get treatment.
The fact that you attack people for being financially successful doesn’t change because you had grandparents.
I think Glenn served as a member of the State Department in some of the most combat torn challenging regions of our world. If he had nothing to risk by his service, how do you explain all the uniformed service members providing protection to him? As a representative of the State Department he was a target of our enemies.
@Jax
Just for arguments sake, “He is a weak candidate and a weak leader.” It appears “freshman” Nye has submitted and got approved more legislation than both Drake and Schrock in their freshman years.
“And live fire experience?” Seems like a decoration is hot zone like Iraq or Afghanistan isn’t exaly a “cush” job.
Come think of it, since Rigell expounds so much when he did a Marine Reserve stint, where or what are the decorations or campaign ribbons on either him or his son?
I like the paid actors nodding to Nye’s dribble. The guy is not a leader. He is a Pelosi pawn. If he was truly a strong congressman and a strong candidate, he would have fought for both the Littoral Combat Ships and the carrier. Instead he forfeited the former in a weak attempt to keep the latter. There is nothing weak or fake about Scott Rigell. He is a proven leader who knows and speaks the facts – about Nye and about the country. He is the congressman we desperately need representing the 2nd district.
Charlie, please be careful what you say about actors. Our resident campaign tactician, BK, may take great offense. Afterall, he acts like a journalist on this forum everyday and gets away with it just fine.
I hope I don’t act like a journalist.
“…..Rigell famously arrived here a few years ago in a trailer with all his worldly possessions.”
You know Mike Barrett is old when he thinks 1986 (24 years ago) was just a “few years ago.”
Rigell arrives during the Reagan Administration, and that’s just a “few years ago.” What, and ET is a “recently released move?” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is a relatively “new” record!
I love this Mike Barrett guy; his prescription for all that fails us is more taxes and more government. What a broken record.
Brian, got the meds in a wine glass.. feelin alright. I applaude the GOP candidate for running a fine business, certainly it is a model of how to run a dealership. I also recognize the fruits of harvesting capitol and commendably accumulating wealth and supporting charitable causes. Two thumbs up to Scott for his good deeds, they do not go unnoticed, and this is one major reason I chose to buy several Fords and Volvo’s from his businesses. That said, there are many good potential candidates who will never run for office because for the most part running for Congress is a rich mans game. That is not an assault on Scott, it is an observation I and many other “monied” individuals hold. This conversation came up recently at the club (same club Scott is a member of) and not one candidate was mentioned but the discussion revolved around codependent influence of money on the better qualified people wishing to apply for the jobs in the house and senate.
I do not asses someones capability to perform a specialized task based on wealth, I base it on individual references, professional experiences and on the job track record. It’s a rich mans world, you know it, the working class knows it, the wealthiest 1% know it too and an even smaller percentage of them hold the purse strings. Facts Brian, not attacks.
Continue with those clever attack ads Team GOP, they are working.
James, you sound more like a Democrat every day.
Brian, Until republicans start acting more like republicans and put their constituents values first, you can call me anything you want if that floats your boat. If you are not fed up with both parties right now, you might be a rino.. not calling you out bud, just sayin.
I remain a republican but in this congressional race I am in exile because I believe the party has chosen money over experience. I support McDonnell, Bolling, Cooch, Bullock, DeSteph, Knight, Stolle and many other conservative republicans who have taken a step by step approach to proving themselves before seeking higher public office and honorably earning their stripes and gaining experience along the way before moving up to take on more responsibility. Experience matters Brian, does it not?
Yes, integrity does matter and when someone calling themself a republican donates $1000 to the most disgustingly pro choice president ever Barack Obama, I have to say NO to my party.
Brian, to clarify the angle that I think James is taking, the current FEC laws prohibit individuals who aren’t extremely wealthy from having the ability to compete.
The solution is not to bar the wealthy candidates from spending their fortune on a race, they earned the money and deserve to spend it as best they see fit. The solution is to get rid of these silly limits. Then wealthy candidates could financially support experienced leaders instead of being cheaper for a political party to run, and thus, the chosen nominee for a particular party. To that end I agree.
Free speech is limited under McCain/Feingold. This tips the balance and favorability towards the extremely wealthy because it is very difficult to raise congressional level funds with 2400 a pop. As I am sure you have read many FEC reports, everybody’s family members suddenly have 2400 dollars to contribute and the system is just bent and distorted.
Scrap the FEC site for something more user friendly like VPAP and implement Virginia style campaign finance laws (or lack thereof).
James, you’re the one attacking people for being capitalists. If I’m a rino, you’re a socialist.
Ryan, I couldn’t agree with you more.
“Capitalist”, what the heck does economic liberalism have to do with conservative and Rhino? You people throw around labels without any sense practical meaning. Maybe that’s the problem. You talk but don’t practice what you preach. Reading previous posts it looks as if “VB Arts & Humanities Commission” Kirwin would accept as much money for the arts the government will give.
Hey fake name “on the fence,” (sharing an IP address with a very public figure, btw) what the heck does “without any sense practical meaning” mean?
Perhaps you should use both hands while typing…
Brian, when the fog of banter clears, what is important for republicans activists to keep in mind is that this election cycle is about patriotic god loving Americans sobering up and their rejection of the big government socialist more than an endorsement of the present day GOP which for good cause targets sanfranfreako socialist Nancy Pelosi.
Removing Nye to remove Pelosi must be JOB #1, not attacking individual character which is a motivator for emotional dems. Nye’s ads strategy is firing blanks right now.. they will have to distance him from mrs speaker in the coming weeks and after that the live rounds of poo will fly.
Glenn Nyes’ State Department service:
Seems to me Glenn was not just one of those members who flew in and flew out of the combat zones, he stayed put.
Perhaps Kenny’s service holds up in comparison, but Rigell’s? Scott’s service was in the used car lot and the new car showroom. While service in the used car lot might qualify as combat, just who should be praised for service, the salesman or the customer?
David, so what do your points about contrasting military service with other Government service have to do with anything relevant in the upcoming election? All who served our country have taken an oath to the United States, so the facts of what happend after that oath are irrelevant as was demonstrated in the 2nd District primary.
The fact that all candidates took that oath and were true to the United States is what matters. The rest is politics.
It is incredibly ironic that tea party members would consider Scott Rigell to be a person that will vote their values. Fact is, he will be beholden to Eric Cantor and the leadership of the Party which is in bed with Wall Street tycoons, International Corporations, and the Oil, Gas, and Coal companies that use our money to stop their competition so they can continue to pollute the environment. Somehow, when I read their goals and objectives, many of with which I can agree, there is so much dissonance between the republican party and the tea party that it is laughable that any real member could support Rigell.
Mike, I am meeting some people who identify with the tea party along with the gop nominee but a larger number of them are registered republicans who are not supporting him.
A vote for Golden is a vote to ignore Cantor or any party honcho since the people who vote are the only bosses that matter.
Mike, who’s crap are you shoveling these days? You can replace Rigell with Nye and “Eric Cantor” with Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Rangle and a host of others on “your” side and your statement will still be true. With every “tit” there is a “tat” on the other side, so instead of parroting Ms. Huffington and your other liberal heros, get creative and let’s have a real discussion. Gee, where did I just see that phrase… “useful idiot”?
James, who are registered Republicans? In Virginia?
The Quality of Mercy
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God’s
When mercy seasons justice.
William Shakespeare

Well thanks Tim J; exactly my point as well. So if a member of the tea party actually supports the stated values of the movement, there is no way they could actually support Rigell/Cantor. Afterall, we have been through this with Bush; failure to regulate properly, tax breaks for international corporations, TARP for Wall Street banks, and more tax cuts for the ultra rich like them so they can afford European vacations and fine wine. Frankly, I can’t find those positions on any tea party pledge.
At the Great Debate a couple of weeks ago, Glenn Nye said he wanted to continue the Bush tax cuts for ultra rich democrats like John Kerry who I voted for in 2004.
Vulnerable Democrats duck public events
Glenn Nye in the news at politico
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0910/41849.html
“Ditto for Virginia Rep. Glenn Nye, who has a tool that lets users enter their zip code to get listings of events near their homes. Entering the zip code for Nye’s campaign office yields nothing within 50 miles.
In Nye’s 2nd District, based in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, challenger Scott Rigell is holding town halls even though he’s not a sitting member of Congress — and the first of his “Ten Commitments” to his would-be constituents is that he would “listen to your concerns, issues and ideas.” He even lists a home phone number on his website”
Even Tom Perriello is mentioned.
“Rep. Tom Perriello of Virginia, one of the most vulnerable House Democrats in the country, actually walked into the lion’s den, meeting with members of a local tea party. Democratic polls show Perriello within the margin of error against Republican challenger Robert Hurt, but a recent independent survey gave Hurt a 26-point advantage over the incumbent.”
Tom Perriello has the “cajones” of Sarah Palin.
On 11/03/2010 when the democrats decide to feed Tim Kaine to the hungry tiburones, I think that Tom Perriello might make an excellent replacement.
Sigh, still no answer from Mr Barrett about Glenn Nye’s support for the Bush tax cuts for ultra rich democrats.
@James
I saw the article you referred to and that really stuck out to me as well. When a national news outlet singles you out as avoiding constituents, that is definitely a sign of trouble!!
I guess the Nye Campaign is trying to make it appear that the Congressman regularly sits down and talks with concerned voters-which couldn’t be further from the truth. Scott Rigell has been hosting town hall meetings throughout the District which are open to the public. Congressman Nye has even been invited to a few of them. When a candidate is making a greater effort to hear from voters than the sitting Congressman, it’s time for those voters to strongly consider a change in leadership. Maybe Rep. Nye is afraid voters will ask him about his votes for Pelosi to be Speaker and the stimulus if he actually makes an effort to speak with them.
Phillip, Will Scott attend Golden or Nye town halls? Wouldn’t that be sweet. Scott has been inviting only one of the two candidates on the ballot to his town halls.. seems kind of cowardly or maybe its just a cheap publicity stunt. Nye’s staff have repeatedly indicated that he will appear at debates and forums along with the independent candidate Kenny Golden.
It remains to be seen whether Scott will attend the only two debates that are scheduled.
On a side note there will be a candidate forum sept 16 at the Creeds Elementary cafeteria hosted by the Pungo Back Bay Civic League.
