Rigell fulfills promise to Bearing Drift by signing Tea Party pledge
By | Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 | Politics

Last week, Scott Rigell, Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, signed an oath proposed by the Hampton Roads Tea Party on a variety of issues dealing with limited government, fiscal discipline, repealing health care, ensuring free speech on the internet, and preserving national sovereignty.

This brings to fruition the promise Rigell gave Bearing Drift on primary night to endeavor to actively seek out the Tea Party’s “confidence”, stating that he shared many of the same core values of the Tea Party.

Specifically, Rigell pledges:

In addition to my sacred oath as a representative to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, if elected to Congress I pledge:

  • To promote fiscal discipline and accountability by supporting a full audit of the Federal Reserve System that would be made available to the Congress and the American People. I will support this through any House rule or procedure, any Committee vote, and any House floor roll call vote.
  • To fix Washington’s spending problem and set America on the right fiscal track by supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment or similar Constitutional amendment (e.g. Taxpayers Bill of Rights which is indexed to population growth) that serves as an objective standard to control government spending.
  • To promote the economic wellbeing of American families and businesses by voting against any tax or fee increase. I will not support any increase in Congressional salaries, perks, retirement, or health benefits until the budget is balanced.
  • To safeguard America’s fundamental principles and liberties through vigilance in protecting the rights of free speech. I will vote against any legislation that abridges free speech under the guise of “internet neutrality” or “campaign finance reform”, supports “kill switch”, creates internet taxes, or imposes a “fairness” doctrine.
  • To uphold the Constitution and protect America’s economic freedom by supporting legislation (such as the Discharge Petition now in Congress) that defunds, repeals, and replaces the Affordable Health and Patient Recovery Act and actively promotes free market solutions to address the nation’s healthcare concerns. I will do this in any House procedure, Committee vote, or House floor roll call vote. I commit to overriding any Presidential veto of the same.
  • To bring accountability and reform to Washington by supporting any type of legislation that would increase transparency and accountability in any act of Congress, such as the Enumerated Powers Act.
  • To fight any measure that subverts U.S. sovereignty, whether through trade, currency, environmental causes, the United Nations, immigration amnesty, or under the guise of human rights.

Tea Party leader Karen Hurd said in an interview with the Virginian-Pilot that the goal of this pledge is to boost the Rigell candidacy, marginalize Ken Golden’s, and defeat incumbent Glenn Nye; however, despite the pledge, the Tea Party has not endorsed Rigell.

Back in May, when Hurd and the Tea Party board endorsed Ben Loyola in the GOP primary, many thought that the organization’s leadership overstepped their position and was acting independently of its membership.

Perhaps that’s why Hurd has stopped just short of endorsing Rigell?

Good job Scott, I love when a candidate is willing to put things in writing and make a public pledge. Glenn Nye likes to boast he voted against Obamacare, will now he pledge to sign the discharge petition so the House can re-vote on the measure?

To win a campaign you need a broad coalition for victory, and the Tea Party supports sound fiscal policy and the constitution — both positions that align well with the GOP. Nice initiative on Scott Rigell’s part.

Great move for sure. Just one more step towards Scott winning this thing in November. This was one area of concern that I had, as I knew Kenny would by fighting for the Tea Party backing. I really thought he’d be out of the race by now, but he’s still hanging on for some reason. Rigell has this thing on lock down, and has pretty much from the get go. The guy has been campaigning since before this time last year. Couple that with the name recognition he already has, equals big Rigell win in November.

  3. On the fence August 31, 2010 12:02 pm

Some how I can’t shake the feeling that there was personal colusion between Rigell and Hurd and also was, or will be, some third party financial consideration involved with this unholy alliance. The statements by Hurd to marginalize a bonafide candidate does not seem in keeping with the tenents of tea party members, I think they should throw this self-serving, self-appointed leader out on her ear. If this was truly on the up and up, Golden would have been offered an opportunity to sign the pledge. Hurd has successfully besmurched the the reason the tea party was formulated – a decade of an ineffectual congress.

  4. Jax August 31, 2010 12:56 pm

Collusion? Simply not true. I know Tea Partiers all over the district, and they are supporting Scott. Golden didn’t get the opportunity, well, because he doesn’t have a campaign. I don’t understand why people are still considering him a candidate. He can’t even run a campaign, he’s certainly not going to run the district well. Just saying.
This was a great move, helping form the united front that will be needed to take out nye. Haters keep hating, but this is simple politics. Rigell is moving forward with an incredible amount of momentum. All the while Nye is getting owned by both parties, and Golden…ya, about that.

  5. Craig Kilby August 31, 2010 13:02 pm

As always, quite interesting. I can’t wait for the Tea Party to run their own candidates on their own ticket. It is getting tiresome to see the weak slate of people they have sometimes nominated on the GOP ticket across the US. I think they’ve handed the DEMS some handy victories. Then we may learn just how much juice they really have. I have a difficult time getting my around this bunch. I may be in the dark here, but they strike me as a group of disgruntled malcontents who don’t really agree on anything except to complain — WHINOS– (and in the case of Catherine Crabhill, actually propose to execute by firing squad a “sample” group of Congress people to “teach them a lesson.”) So far, I’m not impressed.

  6. Mike Barrett August 31, 2010 13:23 pm

I’m sure those on the far right will applaud this announcement. I for one take this as confirmation that Scott Rigell is not fit for office. Just as the Delegates in the Commonwealth of Virginia who have signed the no tax pledge, along with their sympathizers, have used this pledge to slowly yet inexorably destroy our transportation infrastructure, so the tea party pledge handcuffs any signer from considering and voting for the broad array of actions necessary to deal with emergency and severe crises facing our nation.

  7. Jax August 31, 2010 13:27 pm

All I know is that it is a powerful movement, and getting their support makes sense. It will bring a new stream of support and voters to Rigell, shut out Kenny, and Nye is just done. Rigell has campaigned for so long, and I heard the next two months are going to be absolutely crazy. His campaign is going into overdrive, as are all the organizations supporting him. Nye and Golden just don’t have that support, and never will.

  8. James Hawkins August 31, 2010 13:33 pm

I had to work so I missed the meeting where I believe all of this was discussed. So can not tell you the reasoning.

Personally I think it would be best for the HRTP not to endorse a candidate. I think it would be best for each member of The Tea Party to make an individual decision as to who they believe is the best candidate. Then vote and/or work for that candidate.

I am certain there was no “personal colusion between Rigell and Hurd” or “third party financial consideration”. I may not agree with Tea Party leader Karen Hurd about EVERYTHING but she has my support and respect.

  9. Whitt Miller August 31, 2010 14:01 pm

I think it’s a great way for the tea party to back Scott Rigell without overstepping any boundaries. He is a candidate that stands for the same principles the tea party does and is very like minded. I cannot agree more with the reasoning behind this oath signing!

  10. Bryan Stuart August 31, 2010 17:35 pm

I think it shows a lot of maturity on the Tea Party’s part and leadership. We won’t endorse a candidate, but we do have broad principles that we encourage candidates to sign and pledge so all voters of the 2nd District can hold them account.

Very savvy move by the Tea Party and Scott Rigell

  11. Phillip Meridian August 31, 2010 18:34 pm

Way to go Rigell!! This Tea Party pledge is simply a written copy of the core principles Mr. Rigell has been running on for over a year now–cutting spending, cutting taxes, and reforming government. I applaud the Tea Party board for recognizing that their aims and Scott’s are the same. I am sure that the fervent support of Ben Loyola, Bert Mizusawa, Scott Taylor, and Jessica Sandlin also contributed to this move toward unity.

By the way, when has Glenn Nye EVER been willing to sign a genuinely substantive pledge like this one? Never, so far as I can tell. Perhaps that’s because he’s more concerned with his reelection than taking a leadership role in reforming Congress.

  12. TeaPartyPatriot August 31, 2010 19:25 pm

Karen Hurd DOES NOT speak for the Tea Party. I don’t think she or Rigell really fathom just how angry this has made the rank and file of the movement. We started this thing because people like Karen were engaging in backroom deals with candidates. This pledge was never offered to the other candidates, Campaign for Liberty was not involved as the Pilot article stated, and the pledge says nothing about Rigell resigning if he fails to uphold it.

Karen, if you read this, there are a ton of people out for your head right now. You have embarrassed the tea party for the last time by pretending to speak for them. You have committed the cardinal sin that you have railed so hard against; making back room deals to support candidates.

If you had any integrity at all you would have offered this Kenny, especially since all of the points are already contained on his website. You clearly are just in this for personal gain and that is why myself and dozens of other members of the tea party are coming for your proverbial head. You had better watch your back.

  13. Scott August 31, 2010 20:46 pm

    Awkward…

Rectum? It damn near killed em!

  14. Phillip Meridian August 31, 2010 21:03 pm

When the Tea Party Board endorsed Loyola in the primary no one, including Rigell, was flinging accusations of backroom deals or complaining about unfairness. The Tea Party Board has probably realized what voters across the District are becoming more aware of every day; a vote for Nye=a vote for Pelosi continuing as Speaker.

The pledge was not offered to Kenny Golden because he is not a viable candidate. Every House member is either a Democrat or Republican and this will be the case in the Second District come November 2. Kenny has a great record of military service but the sheer electoral math (polling only around 4%) shows that voting for Golden will only help Nye and Pelosi continue their path of dangerous tax-and-spend legislation.

Rigell has said all along that he has much in common with those in the Tea Party. As election day nears, those leading the Tea Party of Hampton Roads have accepted these commonalities and pledged to work with Mr. Rigell to put America back on the right track.

  15. Charlie Boone August 31, 2010 21:09 pm

The crisis our country faces is one that could have been prevented had our leaders, past and present, exercised a little fiscal discipline, had a little business sense, and led our country by example.

America needs leaders like Scott Rigell who are willing and able to step out in front and provide our congress and our people with direction in the necessary effort to renew our country. Scott supports congressional reform, smaller government, and protecting American sovereignty, and this pledge does nothing if not highlight those core values.

  16. On the fence August 31, 2010 21:38 pm

Rigell has said all along that he has much in common with those in the Tea Party. – Phillip Meridian

How many in the tea party donated to Obama’s campaign?

  17. kingsmoothie August 31, 2010 22:05 pm

I don’t see why Kenny needs to be invited to make a pledge, he could just do it.
More importantly, I have to agree with Mike Barrett (again! I don’t like that), but for different reasons. I don’t like the no tax increase pledge, because know he can’t vote for a flat tax or the Fair Tax, because both would increase taxes for at least some people.

  18. Tim J August 31, 2010 22:29 pm

Kudos to Ben Loyola for setting the example and standing up behind Rigell to help make this happen.

  19. Brian Kirwin August 31, 2010 22:56 pm

Kenny Golden has already said he won’t take a “no tax” pledge. I remember him saying he won’t sign pledges anyway.

So, unless I’m wrong or things changed, it’s a moot point.

  20. Phillip Meridian August 31, 2010 23:01 pm

Rigell gave money to Obama during the primary campaign to prolong the primary so that neither Hillary Clinton nor Obama would make it to the White House. Prior to that he gave the max to Romney and also maxed out to McCain after he got the GOP nomination. I read that he has donated over $400,000 to conservative Republican candidates over the years amounting to 99.7%. How would you like to be attacked for .3% of your total political contributions? The idea that Rigell is not conservative is simply ludicrous when one looks at his total giving history and endorsements. Would McDonnell, Bolling, and Cantor have endorsed someone whose conservatism they doubted?! Absolutely not!!

Scott’s conservatism has been demonstrated throughout his life through his military service, successful private sector business experience, and community leadership. The fact that all of his former primary opponents have lined up in support behind him further attests to this. I look forward to seeing future Congressman Rigell bring REAL change to Virginia and our nation.

I thought that the democratic supporters of Glenn Nye had more class then to pretend to be a member of the HRTP. The way that you lashed out means that you must be one those obama wingnuts.

Their goal? Their as in who? Several Tea Party groups and hrtp members have made it clear that this pledgendorsement was not kosher with the non gop members which raises another question..

  23. J. Christopher Stearns August 31, 2010 23:21 pm

    @Phillip:

I don’t know what your definition of conservatism is, but Representative Cantor appears to be more of a progressive than a conservative – at least in the Constitutional sense.

People can always change for the better, but Eric Cantor has not shown any sort of fondness for our Constitution outside of pandering platitudes. I can think of a few politicians whose endorsement enforces conservative credibility upon a candidate. A pork-loving, entitlement-supporting, bailout-frenzy ego maniac like Representative Cantor should refrain from identifying himself as a conservative. If his previous policy positions reflect the modern definition of conservatism, a shameful thing has been done to the label that Barry Goldwater and Robert Taft fought for in the 20th century.

  26. On the fence September 1, 2010 09:14 am

There is absolutely no doubt that Hurd and Rigell conspired to arrive at an acceptable pledge to which Rigell would agree to sign. The major tea party tenants of federal interference in education, entitlements, social security, and fair tax are notable missing.
Some of the major issues that the Tea Party holds high on list are just not there. A pledge as to the issues that were already included in his platform is meaningless. Hurd compromised any significant influence the HR Tea Party may have had for her own self-serving personal gain. Money corrupts. How many pieces of silver, Judas?

  27. Mike Barrett September 1, 2010 09:15 am

So it sounds to me like pandering to the extremists in the tea party is the way to get the republican nomination. But of course, to sell your political soul to a movement that professes to want to do away with social security, medicaid, medicare, and financial regulation, the lack of which caused the great recession, may be less a boon and more a hindrance in a general election. Of course, Rigell and Golden can just keep duking it out, and we’ll see which emerges as the voice of the party. In neither case will it be a person that can perform to the standard set by Glenn Nye.

  28. Bryan Stuart September 1, 2010 09:22 am

Of all the bizarre rants from James Cohen, that one takes the cake!

  29. Tim J September 1, 2010 09:52 am

Maybe those are the words to Kenny’s new “fight” song?

  30. kingsmoothie September 1, 2010 11:35 am

@ Mike, What does Hurd get? As in “for her own self-serving personal gain?”

  31. Jax September 1, 2010 19:27 pm

Perform to the standard Glenn Nye set? What standard is that? He’s a nobody out here. His election was a total fluke, if it wasn’t for Obama, this guy wouldn’t be in Congress. It will be a great day in Hampton Roads when Scott gets elected. Nye doesn’t stand a chance.
As for Scott not being a conservative, it’s an old, tired argument. He has support from the conservative movement nationwide. Anyone can sit and shake their head, and say that isn’t the case. Scott’s endorsements, support in the community, the social media channels, etc all say other wise.
So, keep up the BS comments here at Bearing Drift. I love them! Hate all you want, say what you want. Scott Rigell will be a great leader for the 2nd District in Congress, just like he’s been leading here for 20+ years. Nye and Golden will be a fleeting memory while Scott is leading change in Washington.

  32. James "turbo" Cohen September 1, 2010 20:22 pm

Jax said: “He has support from the conservative movement nationwide. Anyone can sit and shake their head, and say that isn’t the case.” Please feel free to name the nationwide conservative movement that he has support from, including endorsements.

And Jax, I reject that there is true hate for any candidate.

  33. Bryan Stuart September 1, 2010 22:21 pm

Let’s see, he’s endorsed by Eagle Forum and Move America Forward among other groups.

can you name one national group that has endorsed Kenny?

  34. James "turbo" Cohen September 1, 2010 23:15 pm

Kenny stands on his own record, his service to this country speaks for itself, let alone his 6 years of service to the RPVB. Kenny to my knowledge does not seek endorsements.. Has asked several to not endorse anyone.
So, what other groups is your guy endorsed by?

  35. Leigh Paradise September 2, 2010 00:10 am

Scott Rigell and the Tea Party have the same goals, which is to stop this insane spending and respect the constitution. Scott is a successful businessman so he’ll look out for the average small business owner and the average tax payer. I can’t say the same for Glenn Nye.

The Tea Party and Karen Hurd see that Scott has the momentum and vision to win in November. Why would be not sign their pledge? He’s been saying those exact things for months.

    Vote Rigell on Nov 2!

  36. Phillip Meridian September 2, 2010 07:30 am

    @ Leigh:

Completely agree. Scott Rigell has been an incredibly visible presence across the District as a businessman and leader and especially as a candidate. The Rigell team clearly has the momentum here. Have you seen the number of yard signs throughout the District? It seems like more go up every day! The widespread support Mr. Rigell enjoys throughout the District by political leaders and voters becomes more clear every day

  37. Kempsville Don September 2, 2010 08:03 am

I don’t much like Mr. Rigell, but I and every other voter in my family (total 5) will vote for him. Nancy Pelosi knows how to count. She didn’t need Mr. Nye’s vote for health care and gave him permission to vote against it. Glenn Nye is Nancy’s boy and he has to go.

  38. Mike Barrett September 2, 2010 08:51 am

It remains incredible that anyone who actually understands and supports the goals of the tea party would actually vote for an establishment, country club, big business executive candidate like Scott Rigell who will support the national republican agenda of Eric Cantor, which essentially is Bush lite.

Remember folks, it was this support of international corporations, wall street shenanigans, acceleration of the disparity between the ultra rich (like Rigell) and the middle class, that caused the greatest recession since the great depression.

If, in fact, the members are actually as intelligent as the statistics show, why can’t they see that their ideals will receive short shrift the moment Rigell would join with the international corporate lovers who will do anything possible to restore the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and wall street and international corporations as the caller of the shots in all of civil society in the USA.

  39. James "turbo" Cohen September 2, 2010 09:10 am

Leigh, Philip, Don & Mike, Does it appear to you that the hampton roads tea party and others have endorsed the gop nominee?

  40. Mike Barrett September 2, 2010 09:40 am

Yes, of course, a total sell out, and all the yard signs simply tell me that Rigell and his handlers think he can buy the election. If members of the tea party are not enraged at this obvious take over of the election process by republican big corporate money, then they are simply paper tigers.

  41. James "turbo" Cohen September 2, 2010 11:05 am

    Sellout it the theme.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i047w64phWs&feature=related

The cartoon character kind of looks like Kenny sans the moustache.

  43. Kempsville Don September 2, 2010 11:31 am

Keep trying folks. It’s not about the TEA party, it’s about saving this country from the Socialists who like to call themselves Democrats.

… and the almost 2nd Great Depression was caused completely, entirely, one hundred percent, by idiot Socialist-Democrats in Washington who thought forcing banks to give away houses instead of toasters would make this a better country.

  44. Mike Barrett September 2, 2010 11:38 am

Well Kempsville Don, you can say that all you want but you would be wrong every time. Fact is, the Bush led administration and the republican Congress created the greatest financial bubble in history, and guess what, it burst. Most of us earned the bulk of our net worth during the Clinton administration, lost it with Bush’s mismanagement of the economy, and just now are starting to earn it back under President Obama. Why a tea party member, presumably middle class, would entrust their future to the country club, wall street republicans who care not one wit about them except at election time, is the single most perplexing question at this time.

  45. James "turbo" Cohen September 2, 2010 17:22 pm

Kempsville Don, keep on doing your research. Both parties gave us this disaster. No one party is powerful enough to do it all by themselves. The gop and dems keep outdoing themselves. There is plenty of history to back that up.

The Classic Liberal and Classic Conservative convergence
by LadySmith on Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:35 am

A classic liberal is a classic conservative’s friend. In large part, classic conservatives and classic liberals are quite indistinguishable from one another. It is the current broken political process that makes these natural partners appear to be enemies – in this way diminishing the voices (political power) of both.

A classic liberal is a strict constitutional constructionist just as a classic conservative is. Both believe that the constitution is a contract, meant to be honored and preserved by those sworn to “protect and defend” it and by a people who were meant to be protected by it. It is the people’s first line of defense – our greatest safety from a tyrannical government.

A classic liberal will still disagree with you on some issues, but that same classic liberal will insist on allowing a constituional amendment to be the determinative factor because that’s how the republic was designed to work. In fact, that’s the only way that a republic such as ours can long survive. The people are the power. EVERY PROBLEM YOU SEE IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY IS A SYMPTOM OF THE DISOLUTION OF THE CONSTITIONAL REPUBLIC BY THE ENEMIES WITHIN.

A strict constructionist – whether conservative or liberal – will find very few areas of disagreement, if they stick to the facts. That’s because there really aren’t very many areas where there is room for legitimate question – IF the intent of the ratifiers is used to determine meaning. It really is that easy.

On the other hand, progressives and Christian conservatives are enemies of the Constitution. They don’t want the Constitution honored. They just want to use the treasonous courts to destroy the parts of it that they want destroyed.

Consider the 14th Amendment controversy. Its intended meaning is clear. Its author spoke on the floor of the house and was clear about the proposed amendment’s not protecting or granting citizenship to children of aliens. It was clearly explained that an infant (of an alien) is under the jurisdiction of the parents and is not able to choose otherwise – as the amendment requires. The amendment was meant to grant equality to black men. Nothing more.

It was a corrupt Republican court that granted citizenship to pieces of paper and illegal aliens, while at the same time, denying citizens such as former slaves, women, and children of American citizens the same rights that were so readily conferred upon the Robber Barons. The misuse of the 14th Amendment is what so many complain about today. The problems, then, are symptoms of the destruction of our Constitution.

Understand that it took women another half century and a constitutional amendment before they had the legal protection to vote and even more time before they could serve on a jury and even today, they still find themselves living in with a different set of rules than those that govern white men. It took blacks another 100 years before they could receive the same state-sponsored educations as their white counterparts – or walk on the same sidewalks as their white counterparts – or vote, or sit on a jury, or sit at a lunch counter next to their white counterparts. Still today, they are badly used by a society that should treat them better if they believe in the Constitution.

The court has no constitutional right to construe the 14th the way it does unless it first voids the constitution, as it did in McCulloch v. Maryland.

    @Mike,

You speak as though Rigell simply bought a bunch of yard signs and then placed them up all over the district without getting anyone’s permission. Every single one of those sign locations is on private property with the permission and support of the property owner. Rigell volunteers called my house recently and asked me if I wanted one for my yard and I enthusiastically replied yes!! Clearly hundreds of other District voters felt the same. So the number of signs throughout the District actually DO represent genuine overarching support for Mr. Rigell. I have hardly seen any yard signs for Congressman Nye around the area. Perhaps he’s having a difficult time finding people to stand with him.

“I will not support any increase in Congressional salaries, perks, retirement, or health benefits until the budget is balanced.”

That was part of the pledge. So who is against that?

Yeah Philip.. Permission to put up tons of signs was granted alright.. from the city? The members of 2nd calvary were inundated by Nye and Rigell sign wars and several approached team Golden thanking us for not trashing up their neighbors street. Team Rigell was also asked to remove the big sign from the church itself. Is anyone on the gop team embarassed?

[...] Rigell fulfills promise to Bearing Drift by signing Tea Party … Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia's 2nd District, Scott Rigell, pledged an oath to the Hampton Roads Tea Party last week, fulfilling an earlier promise made to Bearing Drift. It was clearly explained that an infant (of an alien) is under the jurisdiction of the parents and is not able to choose otherwise – as the amendment requires. The amendment was meant to grant equality to black men. Nothing more. It was a corrupt Republican court that granted . 6:50 am [...]
