Glenn Nye’s Worst Week Ever Ends With Slap to Face
By | Saturday, August 14th, 2010 | Politics

This week cannot come to a close fast enough for Glenn Nye. First, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates gutted Nye’s re-election bid by moving to shut down JFCOM. Second, a pro-Israel group announced plans rightfully condemning Nye for signing an ill-advised letter going against Israel. And to top off his week?

The Virginia AFL-CIO voted not to endorse Glenn Nye’s re-election bid.

Per Sean Holihan, state Chair of the Virginia Young Democrats:

Hearing VA AFL just voted to not endorse Nye.

Now, there is little organized labor in Hampton Roads or the 2nd District. However, this is the latest battle between Glenn Nye and the progressive left. Voting against health care, cap and trade and unemployment benefits; that’s the voting legacy of Nye trying to cling to power in a true conservative district. However, in doing so, the hard left has despised Nye and finally has had the chance to publicly slap him across the face.

Glenn Nye’s worst week ever concludes in high style.

When the AFL-CIO doesn’t endorse a Democratic incumbent, that incumbent is in trouble.

  3. J.R. Hoeft August 14, 2010 21:44 pm

Clearly Nye is in trouble – he should have switched parties when he had the chance. I wonder how close he really was?

That being said – do the voters want Republican-lite in Nye or the real deal in Rigell?

I’m guessing with no Obama at the top of the ticket and little union support (despite a lot of cash), Nye might just now be the underdog, in spite of his incumbency.

  4. James "turbo" Cohen August 14, 2010 22:56 pm

There is one problem DJ, Real pro israel groups are condemning the Bauer, Kristol made for TV ad buy from the neo-pro israel group for team Rigell and other republicans who pay to play that the group referenced. Thanks for the misinformation.

As far as republican lite Nye vs real deal Rigell, this mornings OMG-RPVB-WTF breakfast may have been Karma for Nye.. Play the ole game Purkey defended the indefensible $1k Obammy donation made by Scotty. How bad can it be for Nye when empowered Rino’s keep rising in the GOP? Am I the only one on this blog that sees what is wrong with the sellout GOP establishment politicians in this picture?

Nye is not much worse for the region than Rigell, the only difference is today, Obama supporter Rigell is not the incumbent establishment politician and will not caucus with dems. The no party affiliation fiscal conservative off the street does not see much difference between the two Obama supporters.

I want my republican party back from the Rino’s who don’t have much more to offer except for shallow promises to not be a vote for Pelosi who is not favored by alienated dems these days anyway. True conservatives know what is wrong with the party, they just need permission from Byler to speak up.. Ask any RPVB committee member, David Bartholomew and/or Gary Byler took away some RPVB 1st Amendment rights of free speech. Can’t make this stuff up.

  5. D.J. Spiker August 14, 2010 23:45 pm

Right, they sure were speaking up when Kenny Golden was the Chair, then when he stepped down to run for the REPUBLICAN Congressional nomination they all stopped. Laughable.

And your no party affiliation conservative off the street has two options in November: Glenn Nye and Scott Rigell. $4000 buys you at best 10% name ID and a generous 3% of the vote. So they vote or they stay home. With the direction of the country, the anti-incumbent throw out the bums mentality means victory for Rigell.

  6. Politics with Pam August 15, 2010 00:05 am

    Turbo,

Have you not realized the Primary is over? Scott Rigell is the Republican nominee. We need to close ranks and support him–100% perfect or not, which none of us are.

Glenn Nye is not a Republican, nor has he ever subscribed to being one. Calling him “Republican Lite” here is not going to amount to anything. He has voted “Right” when convenient for his reelection to do so. Comparing him to Scott Rigell makes no sense given the known backgrounds of both men.

There are no “Rhino’s on the 2nd District Committee. You can easily peruse who we are. Gary Byler can attest I given him as much grief as anyone, and I have a full say on this committee. He has supported ALL Republican efforts here in Norfolk, and I know he will continue to do so despite many opionions to write us off.

If I did not have full confidence in our direction, I would not devote every waking moment outside of my 55 hour Amerigroup workweek to Scott Rigell’s campaign and moreover–the Norfolk Republican Party.

Norfolk will win the 2nd District Precincts in total for Scott Rigell at 51%. Keep in mind-87th HOD Precincts were 55.8% McDonnell last year.

    Pam Brown
    Chair, Norfolk GOP

I guess the party hypnosis is wearing off for thinking people. Pam, you filter through a red lens, dems filter through blue.. I see red, white & blue. People are less inclined than ever to take party line cues from the red or blue party punchbowls.

When is enough enough? The dems lost big last round. BIG. Do you think all we need is a Not-a-dem candidate to win this round? The DPVA has been licking their wounds since january. They have also targeted thi$ lucrative race for a rea$on. The GOP has a weak in the knees candidate that does not do well in front of cameras with experienced candidates when he or his handlers are too out of range to pull the strings. Deny this at your peril. This is a MASSIVE problem that will only fester in the coming months. We also have a problem in that true fiscal conservatives see right through the script.. the play along to get along BS of your candidate is not filling the gop meeting halls, it is discontent.. People want leadership, not merely a red lens establishment follower candidate.

I remain a republican on principle as so many alienated republicans do but until we have proven reliable and experienced republican candidates who consistently stand on principle, this RNC lifer will have irreconcilable differences with the local leadership. Scotty has repeatedly compromised republican principles and the $1k Obama donation is just the tip of the iceberg. Unless one had their head in the sand at the rpvb breakfast, it should be clear enough by now that he is not alone, we are not one big happy family and there is mutiny among the membership. The comments by Rinocrat Purkey are a gift to democrat Nye while helping gop faithful discriminate between rinos and conservatives. Go along to get along with socialism on the rise is not conservatism. The picture is getting clearer Pam.

The next time we drain a swamp, lets drain our own local one first. Old school Conservatism is right, Rinos are wrong, end of story.

  8. Tim J August 15, 2010 13:27 pm

Were Kenny or Scott invited to participate in the meeting with the local political leaders about the JFCOM closing at VMASC next Thursday?

  9. Bryan Stuart August 15, 2010 15:00 pm

Nye not being endorsed by the AFL-CIO is gigantic news, and devastating. He has to hope an outside group comes in and pours some attack ads on Rigell to slow his momentum.

Every where I go I see Rigell 4x8s, counted 12 in Ocean View alone yesterday. Where is Nye? He can’t find anybody that wants one?

  10. On the fence August 15, 2010 21:30 pm

    @Bryan
Interesting that you said 4×8 in Oceanview when Norfolk’s ordinance limits political signs to 4×4. Either you are BS’ing or Rigell’s campaign don’t know the law. Traditionally, political signs go up after labor day. I’m sure you’ll see plenty of signs then, from everybody.

Why no dialog on Delegate Purkey’s diatribe to Princess Anne High school students at the Republican Party breakfast, that it’s ok when you are in business to vote for, and donate to Democrats? Just when the flack on Rigell’s contributions to Obama/Warner all but died, Purkey in a feeble effort to support the Automobile Dealer, rises the Phoenix from the ashes. Talk about a collateral damage slap in the face. This campaign is nothing but a comedy of errors.

Greetings Tom, Tea Party and other Interested folks,

Perhaps I am not understanding what you have said here. Is Party Leadership actually making threats to people? I am Party Leadership and I can say with good conscience I have made no threats to anyone—I simply do not have the time to think on that level and would not do so. I am trying my best to inspire people—not tear them down. Until you have served in this position (and Kenny knows very well what I am talking about), you cannot know exactly what the deal is. Party Leadership is the most thankless job on this earth, and the only reason you do it is because you are driven to elect good men & women who are conservative Republicans. Have we supported incumbents just to win….yes we have, and should not have in many cases, and we have paid a price. Tom, until June 8, you were a full member and participant—now you are talking like “The GOP Answer is Lame”.

What we are facing now is a wholesale dismantling of the US as we know it carried out by the Democratic Congress and President Obama. The Tea Party folks are now involved as a FORCE because of this. (Karen, please correct me if I am wrong). These people no longer feel it’s enough to just go vote—they want to affect the outcome. This is very good news. Republican Party regulars (those of us in the trenches for years) are no longer alone. The problem here, is that the normal Party politics & nomination process that most outside of the Party do not understand has gotten in the way. This cannot be allowed to disrail the goal of defeating the people who are destroying the American way of life.

Like it or not, we have to deal in terms of political reality. None of us created the situation of the lackadaisical public that takes millions of dollars in TV ads just to wake them up. None of us created the political system as we know it. It has evolved over a few hundred years. If life were not so good here—even still we would not have the situation where it takes 6 or 8 million dollars to get elected to Congress. This is the political reality we deal with—anything else is just fantasy.

Folks in the Tea Party—I know that having Minority Leader John Boehner is not the leader you would prefer—and I am sure your opinion is shared. Real government reduction, reform &n restructure is generally not accomplished by people from the current establishment. Paul Ryan, Mike Pence–There are others to be considered and your point is very well taken —but one thing I do know for sure—if The Republican candidate for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District does not win in November, you will get NOTHING.

Everyone, these are my thoughts. If you have other comments etc, I am very glad to entertain them, and we can continue the dialogue.

    Sincerely,

    Pam Brown

The hyperbole and hysteria on this forum is just too much. All Nye has done is continue to work for soldiers, sailors, their families, and veterans, get the carrier issue all but resolved, keep Norfolk and Little Creek in the mix for the Littoral Combat Ship, help bring 6 more F-22s to Langley, continue to position Hampton Roads for the new Joint Strike Fighter, and offer his support to Congressman Forbes in whose district the employees and contractors of JFCOM actually work. In other words, in a bipartisan fashion, he has worked hard for his constituients and called it the way he sees it. Frankly, that it what I and many independent voters want, and the arguing and condemnation on the right on Nye and on each other makes me wonder why any rational voter would consider either Rigell or Golden.

  13. D.J. Spiker August 16, 2010 12:58 pm

Except that you’re not an independent voter…so you really can’t speak for them, same way that I can’t

  14. Mike Barrett August 16, 2010 13:09 pm

Thanks D.J. for letting me know that, but of course, I know my voting preferences a bit better than you do. I guess your failure to know that JFCOM’s operationsw center is in Northern Suffolk and therefore in Randy Forbes’ District is a bit embarrassing, especially when you use it as the lead in part of your article.

  15. James "turbo" Cohen August 16, 2010 13:28 pm

And to be honest, not cutting the democrat congressman any slack but he had about as much influence on the JFCOM decision as Gore had on inventing the internet.. This was a bad bipartisan week for Hampton Roads.

  16. Ron August 16, 2010 20:22 pm

Mike, you are dead wrong, again. The Joint Warfighting Center is in Suffolk – that’s it. The bulk of the combatant command, including its headquarters and its flag officers are in Norfolk at the Naval Base and in other places around the country.

  17. James Hawkins August 16, 2010 22:57 pm

Republican candidates have jumped out to a record-setting 12-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, August 15, 2010. This is the biggest lead the GOP has held in over a decade of Rasmussen Reports surveying.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely Voters would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 36% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. Support for Republicans is up two points from the previous week, while support for Democrats dropped three points.Republicans have led on the Generic Congressional Ballot since June of last year, and their lead hasn’t fallen below five points since the beginning of December. Three times this year, they’ve posted a 10-point lead. Prior to this survey, GOP support since June 2009 has ranged from 41% to 47%. Support for Democrats in the same period has run from 35% to 40%.
Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans back their party’s candidate, while 75% of Democrats support the candidate of their party. Voters not affiliated with either party prefer the GOP candidate by a 52% to 21% margin.Fifty-four percent (54%) of white voters favor the Republican, but 77% of African-Americans prefer the Democrat.

The number of Republicans in the United States slipped a point during July, while the number of unaffiliated voters gained a point. Overall, the numbers signal a high level of stability in the parties as there have been only modest shifts throughout 2010

    I wonder why ????

  18. Mike Barrett August 17, 2010 08:43 am

Thanks Ron; you had better tell Congressman Forbes and all the Senators, Representatives, Mayors, Delegates, the Governor, and city and state official, and the developer of Harbor View, that their concern is totally misplaced.

  19. James "turbo" Cohen August 17, 2010 10:18 am

Time to up the meds Ron.

    About Us
U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) is one of DoD’s ten combatant commands and has several key roles in transforming the U.S. military’s capabilities.

Headquartered in Norfolk, Va., the command oversees a force of more than 1.16 million dedicated men and women, spanning USJFCOM’s service component commands and subordinate activities. The command is comprised of active and reserve personnel from each branch of the armed forces, civil servants and contract employees.

So both of y’all are right, it’s HQ’d in Norfolk, but half of the region’s JFCOMM jobs are in Suffolk.

After watching a video of the Great Debate, I believe it fair to add last night to Glenn Nye’s worst 2 weeks ever.

When Mr Golden called Mr Nye “son”; I had this mental image of Mr Golden patting Nye on the head and telling him to go out and play with the other boys while the adults would take care of things.

  22. Chris Holloman January 8, 2011 15:04 pm

Pam harbors much hate. Her mere words come off as threats in my opinion. I think its time we start looking for the skeletons in her closet. I bet she has quite a few! Time for a background check. Just what does she have to hide.
