How is the GOP fundraising going in Northern Virginia? (UPDATED)
By | Wednesday, July 21st, 2010 | Politics

After two grueling primaries (Yes people are still talking about this) two of our GOP candidates in Northern Virginia have some serious catching up to do in fundraising. The numbers were recently released and already the press and blogs are talking about it.

Since Frank Wolf is in excellent condition money-wise (and going to win with 60% of the vote) I’m only going to focus on VA-08 and VA-11.

VA-08

Emotions are still running high from this primary. Even to this date, people are still talking about the primary on various blogs and forums. One thing is clear though: Patrick Murray has his work cut out for him. Jim Moran has $581,830 in the bank compared to Patrick Murray‘s $29,890. In addition to that he has $35,000 in debt.

Conclusion: Murray is going be outspent probably by 2-1. Recently Democrats attacked him for wanting to end Obamacare but at the same being on a government-funded option (military experience). No word on a response from Murray. I predict that they are going to beat that issue to the death.

VA-11

While Fimian still has some catching up to do, I anticipate that he’ll come closer to Gerry Connolly‘s fundraising numbers. While he did raise more money than Gerry Connolly did during the last cycle, he is still being beat. The total numbers are: $1,274,467 for Gerry and $271,916 for Fimian. It should also be noted that Fimian has $333,344 in debt, yet that can be disputed.

UPDATE: After talking with some people “in the know” and doing some research it appears that most of the “debt” is from 2008 and is paid off.

Conclusion: The fact that Fimian is a Young Gun can still help him later in the game. After all, perhaps people just aren’t paying attention during the summer. I predict money will pour in come September and October.

This will be a tough fight, but a fight that I think Fimian can win. They recently released a campaign update, cited recent polling and will hold more fundraisers throughout the summer.

Hold on before we start making these wild claims about Keith Fimian, lets be aware of something here. Fimian had about 180K in General funds he raised during the primary. Thus he is not exactly the most prolific fundraiser this quarter. But rather a guy who had a one time bump.

Keith can raise plenty on his own but he can also self fund to an extent, in any case, money isn’t the most important thing for him to focus on.
And Wolf only wins 60%? is there some sort of scandal breaking that will cut his margins? He gets 70%+ or I’ll be shocked.

Well, in 2008 he got 58% and in 2006 Wolf got 57% (even though both were bad GOP years and he had a bad opponent.) In 2004 he got 63% of the vote….so 70+% might be a bit wishful thinking..maybe since its a good year he’ll get 65%..

Why are you leaving out the 5th district here? According to the Richmond TImes-Dispatch, quoting a recent poll, he is hugely ahead against Porielli. Yeah, yeah I know the poll can be argued about, and the only poll that counts is on election day. But still, maybe we could all just agree that this race is competitive. It strikes some of the Grumpies around here would rather see Hurst lose and keep Periolli in office, just because their candidate did not win the primary because..well…..he LOST!

When will we ever get our act together?

    Craig –

You know this thread is about NOVA right? That’s why I “left out” the 5th district.

  7. Craig Kilby July 23, 2010 09:59 am

Sorry, no, didn’t know that. Thanks for correction.

As long as the GOP backs candidates with no political experience to run in my district, the 11th, they have no hope of winning.

The times – they are a changing.

Fimian is now cash even with Connolly – it is now down to the votes.

I have lived in the 11th District for over two decades. It is a true delight to see the ever arrogant Gerry Connolly finally on his way out.

The 11th District has, like the rest of the nation, awoken and said “what have we done” and are getting ready to undo this mistake before it gets any worse.

The choice is simple – more of the same nightmare with Gerry (and have no doubt he promises more of the same) or a re-awkening of the American dream and a new begining with Keith Fimian.

11th district it is just a nightmare. It is time to wake up – time to end it. You can do it, but only if you vote on November 2nd.
