Patrick Murray has his work cut out for him
By Josh St. Louis | Friday, July 9th, 2010 | PoliticsReal quick, thanks J.R. for allowing me to start blogging at Bearing Drift! You may recognize me from my work over at Red NoVA. I’m glad to be on team. With that, let’s get to the story of the day-
Today marks the date where its been over a month since primary day in Virginia. Despite this, there are still deep divides within the Republican electorate in Virginia’s 8th District. Despite the favorable election climate, Patrick Murray is still finding that many in the district only feel lukewarm about his candidacy.
2010 should be a great year for Republicans in Virginia. Very rarely does the 8th district get any attention in Congressional elections because people just assume that Jim Moran will win with 60% or more of the vote. (See his margin of victory last year here)
With the winds changing in the GOP’s favor, the 8th District committee set up a Retire Jim Moran website and has been doing some great work there. In addition, Moran was recently name “the worst local member of Congress” by readers of Washingtonian magazine.
Yet, despite all of these good things going for the GOP in the 8th, Patrick Murray is still falling short. In a article published only days ago on http://www.arlnow.com, about 90% of the comments expressed frustration with Murray and his primary campaign. See the article and comments here.
Another article published in the Sun Gazette also mentioned Murray’s uphill climb. Read it here.
Despite all this, the last thing I want is readers thinking that I’m not going to support or vote for Murray. Because I have every intention of doing both. I was a strong supporter of Matthew Berry, but right now more than ever, Republicans in Northern Virginia need unity. The only way to get rid of Jim Moran is unity.
Jim Moran has been an embarrassment for Northern Virginia for far to long. Its time for us to get together and focus our energy on him, not reflecting on the past primary.
With that being said, I urge all Republicans in NOVA to attend his kick-off, next Thursday, July 15. Details here. It should be a good start for those who still feel queazy about him. Hopefully it will reassure some people.
Despite all my criticisms of him during the primary, hopefully he has emerged as a stronger nominee ready to take on Jim Moran.

Glad to see no sour grapes.
I liked Matthew Berry, too, and would have cheerfully supported him.
We need either to un-elect Jim Moran now, or be building the team to do the job later.
It’s at the level of moral imperative.
On election night, CNN pundits were shocked at the voter turnout in a GOP primary in the heavily Dem 8th CD, which far exceeded previous GOP primary turn-out. They were using this as a basis for the gathering storm called November. I hope the GOP in the 8th can get its act together.
Thanks for posting the kickoff date. Queasy more than describes my thoughts on Murray and his (so far) lackluster campaign.
