Entire Palin speech in Norfolk, Virginia available from the Daily Press
By | Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 | Policy

The Daily Press’ “Shad Plank” was able to record the complete Palin speech from Sunday night’s FreedomFest 2010 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The video is a little shaky, but the audio is fine:

The speech was boilerplate and takes on the Obama administration for reckless fiscal management, among others.

FYI – Palin’s ground rules were that the speech could not be recorded. The mere fact that this video exists shows just how hard it is to control everyone who attends a Palin speech at a large venue. So, why not just let the speech be recorded?

I thought she was at her best when she answered the Q&A about her kids. The speech was pretty much Republican Party talking points. Now the Bishop – HE was AWESOME!!!!!

I guess the Daily Press isn’t part of the “lame stream” media like YOU guys;-)

  4. Brian Kirwin June 29, 2010 09:42 am

JR and I listened. The Press just takes whatever they want and dares someone to tell them they can’t.

Obviously, Kimball wasn’t seen, as the “press area” was in the back of the hall.

Brian and JR, you guys played by the rules so you have honor. I guess if everyone recorded her, they could just play her videos at venues and not have to pay the $100,000 speaking fee.

She does have some outrageous legal bills over her head. No wonder she doesn’t trust the media.

Anybody who’d pay this grifter $100,000 to speak has more money than brains.

J.R. Hoeft, apparently Sarah Palin is calling you out.

Basically, she’s calling you a liar in her latest Facebook entry.

Here’s the gist of it: “Earlier this week, I spoke at the Freedom Fest in Norfolk, Virginia; and, evidently, the media was asked to leave – not by me, that’s for sure. I want my message out, so despite reporters making up a story about “Palin people kicking us out” (uh, the “Palin people” entourage would consist of one person – my 15-year-old daughter, Willow – and I have no doubt she could take on any reporter, but I know for certain she didn’t “kick ‘em out” of the event). Anyway, here are some of the key issues I spoke about.”

I’m more inclined to believe your version of the story, because…I believe Sarah Palin can’t say one sentence without lying, but that’s beside the point.

I’d be interested to know what your response is to her accusation, or if you think she’s not targeting you.

  10. JR Hoeft June 30, 2010 23:10 pm

I think it was a mistake by those responsible for the media at the venue based upon the rules given to them by Sarah Palin.

However, it was her contract to place restrictions on those covering her. So, in essence, the venue’s personnel were just following her orders.

Last I checked, Pres. Harry Truman said the buck stopped with him. Is she now saying she’s not responsible for those carrying out her orders? If that’s the case, what kind of Commander-in-Chief would she be?

  11. Kathy Mateer July 1, 2010 00:20 am

I went to Key West and saw the wooden desk sign that he had made, “The Buck Stops Here”. It sits on the desk at the old Key West Presidential Retreat that is now a museum.

With any leader the buck does stop with them.

  12. Simion July 1, 2010 00:36 am

    JR,
She’s not the “president” of the event, she is their guest. They were responsible for messing up your gig, not her.
I guess you are looking for an overbearing, power-hungry person that makes everyone bend to their demand as you commander in chief. I reckon you should vote for Obama in the next election then.

  13. Simion July 1, 2010 00:39 am

By the way, did you read her contract?

I didn’t think so… Basically you’re guessing she had anything to do with it. I hope you enjoy your 15 minutes of Palin bashing fame. Everyone willing to do so, will get it.

  14. Richard in NC July 1, 2010 01:45 am

I am sorry JR, but I just don’t get the outrage at Sarah Palin. Freedom 1650 maybe. That was who sponsored the event correct? I don’t think it was called Palin Fest, or that she was in charge of the event or the security enforcement. Palin was an invited speaker. I doubt she knew who you were or really cared for that matter. Do you really have such an inflated sense of self importance that you actually believe Sarah Palin decided to have you personally removed? Give me a break.

I understand why you would be upset about the whole situation. I just think your outrage at Palin is pathetic and rather weak. Take it up with the sponsers of the event. I notice you don’t have any quotes from any of the organizers placing the blame on Palin. Hell, use some anonymous sources like the rest of the media does concerning Palin to back up your claims. Instead we get conspiracy theories. (If I have missed these claims from the actual people who sponsored this event then I apologize).

A few questions if you would be so kind to answer.

Did you pay for a ticket to the event?

Did you tape the speeches of Oliver North or George Allen?

Do you think that ticket sales for the event would have diminished if people knew they could watch it online that same evening or the next morning?

If ticket sales would have been affected does that make a reasonable explanation as to why the sponsors would not want the event “live-blogged” or taped?

Your new hero status to the Palin-hating left should serve you well as you move forward. If you are able to keep up the “heat” on Palin then your website hits should go through the roof. I mean when Andrew Sullivan becomes a fan you know you have arrived. Please try not to emulate little Andi though. Conspiracy theories about an out of control Sarah Palin kicking a “pro-Palin” blogger out of an event can’t compete with a Trig-truther conspiracy. Plus there is only so much room in Palin’s uterus you know.

  15. JR Hoeft July 1, 2010 11:26 am

    It’s not outrage, Richard.

And, no, I don’t intend on going the path of Andrew Sullivan.

    1) We had an “all access” pass – including to the VIP events – given to us by the event organizer, Steve Batton. He invited us to the event.

    2) Yes. I taped the speeches of North and Allen.

    3) No. Just like people still go see other live events that they can see recaps of later.

    4) No. See point number 1 – the event organizer wanted us to do it and he had the most to lose as the sales affect his bottom line.

@Simion – don’t be a fool. She’s saying that she bears no responsibility for those who were following her rules. So, despite the fact that the “followers” made a mistake does not mean she abdicates responsibility.

  16. Gary July 1, 2010 14:32 pm

J.R. thanks for posting the link to “Shad Plank” that I posted on your other nonsensical thread.

I think the fact this video exists calls into question your entire story.

I wrote about this while discussing Sarah’s latest FB post, and used the video. This was a POWERFUL speech.

Anyhow, as someone who has been around events all of my life, I have never seen a credentialed media member hassled if they were not acting stupidly (to quote our president)

I doubt you were acting stupidly.

My question is, you have said you were invited to cover this by the event’s sponsor. You couldn’t have dropped a name or two?

I wouldn’t have made an ass of myself, but I certainly wouldn’t have packed up without an effort to get things right.

My other concern is your absolute glee at taking on Sarah Palin and blaming this on her. You Harry Truman “buck stops here” is ridiculous and childish.

This was NOT a “Sarah Palin” event, although one could argue that since she is the leader of the FREE world, any event she attends is a “Sarah Palin” event, the fact is, this was an event that had many great and inspiring leaders.

Sarah was not in charge of this event. Her so-called “rules” did not apply. They don’t at things like this.

The only time her “rules” apply is when she is under contract to private events that feature her only or where she is the main speaker, and paid.

If this was one of those kind of events, you MIGHT have a case, but at this point your story falls on it’s face. This event WAS NOT run by Sarah or her people. As she has said “her people” at this event consisted of her and her daughter Willow.

Past that, every single event Sarah does, even those where her agent, the Washington Speaker’s Bureau, have it in the contract that no recording is allowed, which is standard boilerplate stuff for ALL speakers, people live tweet and film her.

Out of all of these many occasions that folks have live tweeted, filmed her, or recorded audio, YOU are the only person to CLAIM they were kicked out.

This brings me back to asking, what exactly were you doing to get kicked out? You must have done something to draw attention when others were also tweeting and filming.

I honestly wonder, did this event even occur, or are you making things up?

You certainly have gotten a lot of free publicity for being the only cat EVER to be kicked out of a Sarah Palin speech, ever.

I mean heck, even the freak show Alaska Mafia members, Obama’s hand picked Alaska bloggers who continually harass Palin, and were responsible for recruiting people to file all of those bogus ethics complaints, have managed to record her at events, with no problem. And if ANYONE was gonna get kicked out, it would be this bunch of reprobates.

At this point, with all of the mounting evidence against you and your story, the burden of proof is on you.

Did you get the name of the person who kicked you out? You can bet your life I would have! This guy’s name and description would have been posted straight away.

Again, to an outsider, it appears that:

    (A) You are using this as an excuse to smear Sarah Palin who had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this.

    (B) It’s a great distraction to keep people from paying attention to a truly presidential level speech, a very Reganesque speech, and an important speech.

We understand that establishment Republicans fear Sarah Palin. They know how she took down corrupt Republicans in Alaska.

Hell, she took down the entire leadership of the Alaska Republican Party, as well as members of Frank Murkowski’s self proclaimed “Corrupt Bastards Club.”

She didn’t just get them fired, she brought in the FBI! People went to the federal gray bar hotel for a long time.

I would imagine the old GOP establishment, the country club, milquetoast squishes, will try and move heaven and earth to stop Sarah just like they did with Ronald Reagan.

When Sarah becomes President in 2013, you can bet the old GOP will be done. In fact, she’s doing her job right now and getting solid reformers elected to replace them.

    (C) This has made you, someone no one ever heard of nationally a little better known. All publicity is good publicity, huh?

    (D) In my personal opinion, it looks like you have made all or part of this incident up. It just doesn’t square with what we know about Sarah Palin events in general. And again, since this was NOT a Sarah Palin event, and something she had ZERO control over, your zeal at blaming all of this on her personally, calls your motives into question BIG TIME.

There are a lot of holes in your story. The burden of proof now lies at your feet. You need to prove this happened or stop saying it did.

In fact, I think you owe Sarah Palin a huge apology for this nonsense. If what you claim actually happened, which I seriously call into question, your beef is with the event promoters, not her.

In short, put up, or shut up.

  17. JR Hoeft July 1, 2010 15:09 pm

    Gary,
You have a lot of time on your hands.

This is really the last I have to say on the subject:

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/jun/29/blogger-palin-let-us-cover-you/

I have no desire to diminish the former governor. I would prefer to follow Reagan’s 11th.

I doubt this event does anything for my popularity and I doubt it changes the governor’s ground rules.

I guess I was just the lucky anomaly that this happened to – I, and my colleague who was with me – certainly not making this up.

Just a final point – he an I were the only ones seated at a table in a media area at the back of the arena and were very easy to see. We had all our gear out and were focused on the event.

The other media present – Daily Press, Virginian-Pilot, AP – were throughout the crowd.

I know better for next time, if there is one.

I really don’t blame anyone. It was a misapplication of the governor’s ground rules, but it’s needless that she even has them.

  18. James "turbo" Cohen July 1, 2010 21:59 pm

Has the event organizer commented yet? That would help clear the air.

  19. Gray July 2, 2010 09:46 am

@Gary: A presidential level speech? I know several lifelong politicos who were in the audience and suggested she needed a new speechwriter, tout de suite.
@J.R.: Great job on the Wash Times article. You told the story, have a corroborating witness, and this happened to at least one other press member at the event. It is disappointing, but not out of left field, as some would suggest.
Really like the new layout of BD!

  20. Brian Kirwin July 2, 2010 10:28 am

I will say this. Her speechwriter has not mastered writing for her speaking style.

It’s like she was reading someone else’s speech.

When she got to Q and A and was extemporaneous, she was magic.

  21. J.M. Ripley July 2, 2010 13:33 pm

I was at Freedomfest as well and can say, that while I enjoyed hearing Sarah Palin speak, her speech was not that good. It felt like I was in college again, hearing a fellow student give an oral report.

She didn’t pause for effect and her cadence in the delivery was off as well. Chalk this up as just a bad night, perhaps. I have heard her before and she was better.

As for Jim and Brian. I could see them at their table from my seat, typing away and a light was on in front of them as I was following their comments on my phone. Then about 5 minutes into it (Palin’s speech)…Jim signs off as being asked by a Palin person to shut down. The light went out and they were gone.

So it is not out of this world to logically conclude that while Sarah Palin is speaking and someone comes up and says it is Palin’s policy to only record and take pictures of the first 5 minutes of the speech, that that person works for the Governor. I give Jim credit for not losing his temper, if it had been me I would have told the guy to go f*** himself and make me stop. Anyway…

  22. David Beemer July 2, 2010 23:35 pm

    “Obviously, Kimball wasn’t seen”

I saw him, my daughter took a picture of him and wanted to grab him by the scruff of the neck. Watching him tape was painful, as he just couldn’t keep the camera still. Kimball please buy a small telescopic tripod!

Half way through the speech I was looking around to see if anyone was walking out and noticed the “media” table at the back was empty. Found out later that Brian and JR were asked to leave. From what I understand they were just blogging live and had to shut down for Palin?

I find this whole event odd. It was clearly a GOP pep rally with a price.

I’ve been active in politics my whole life and this is the first time I’ve experienced a pay to attend political pep rally. The good news is I got to drink a Bud but if this is the future of “our” politics I don’t like it especially if the media is being asked or told not to record parts of the event.
