Loyola, Mizusawa and Rigell bring Obama to Virginia
By JR Hoeft | Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 | PoliticsThe race for Virginia’s GOP nomination in the 2nd Congressional District is down to the final week and President Barack Obama has made an appearance – in campaign ads for both Ben Loyola and Bert Mizusawa.
During the 2008 Democratic Primary, Scott Rigell donated $1000 to Obama.
Mizusawa is critical of that donation in this direct mail piece that was sent to voters this weekend:
You gotta admit, the lemon was a nice touch.
Ben Loyola is also critical of that donation and is now running this radio ad:

Does anyone have the original source for the “moved by his rhetoric” quote? No, I’m not talking about the Human Events/Taylor ad/article. That ad/article doesn’t cite and simply states a local blog.
Here ya go Really??

There are others out there but Scott appears to have replied personally..
$250,000 to Rs > $1,000 to Obama.
Thank you Turbo!

A special thank you to WYRM for hosting the only hard hitting forum and RPN for allowing some “doing it live”.
Before everyone gets their knickers in a twist about this, consider the following, which all went down here on BD, Alt Daily, and the Pilot. On May 28th the Rigell campaign unleashed another round of BD blog posts that implied Bert was dishonest and had abandoned his family. For the past few weeks, the same posters have dropped in an out of every Mizusawa press piece, anonymously, with the same charges and insinuations.
When one of Bert’s supporters crossed the line — in response to the Rigell generated dung – the Mizusawa campaign called BD immediately to request the ‘unsubstantiated charges’ portion of the post be redacted. In contrast, Rigell remains silent, while his paid underlings do dirty work.
The big difference between the two campaigns:
1) Bert Mizusawa is upfront; he signs his name to it – he owns it.
2) His piece is factual and, more importantly – issue oriented, material, and significant.
Every candidate is judged not just on what they stay, but also on their history. When the resume and chatter don’t match, it’s well within fair play to let voters in on it. Especially now, at this time, when we’re all sick & tired of campaign promises leading to no action, no courage of convictions, and no solutions. Scott seems to have a history of caving in to the ‘best option at the time’, which is a data point worth knowing.
How is Bert being straight up with voters when he tells them about the check to Obama but fails to tell them that Scott was a maxed out donor to Republican Mitt Romney and maxed out donor to Republican John McCain?
How is Bert being straight up with voters when he fails to tell them that over 99% of Scott Rigell’s political donations have gone to Republicans?
How is Bert being straight with voters when he HIMSELF donated to a liberal Democrat, Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island?
@Brian W. Schoeneman
$250,000 to Rs > $1,000 to Obama.
$1,000 to Obama > $250 to Scott Brown????
Thanks “turbo” for the links… especially the one from Loyola that pulls Rigell’s many comments together with video, and backs up the ads he is running on radio.

It’s like getting a broadside volley from a Battleship.
Bryan R — if only your name was Jane, I could then use the old Saturday Night Live intro . . . Jane, you ignorant slut.
FYI, Bryan R, Bert attended USMA from 1975 – 1979. I was there with him. Jack Reed was a faculty professor there when we were cadets. He was also a fellow Army officer and, back in the 1980′s, shortly after we graduated, he was making his first run for office and called every fellow officer he knew asking for help. I know your guy doesn’t live in the same economic sphere as most of us, but not everyone has a yacht and $12 mil in the bank to blow. Anyway, Bert gave Reed, I believe, $200-$250. As far as I know, it’s the only time he’s ever given to a Dem and it wasn’t because he was moved by Reed’s rhetoric. It wasn’t because he wanted to pretend to keep Bill Clinton’s father from winning. It wasn’t because he was in the habit of giving to Democrats who might be able to help him out later. Nope. It wasn’t anything other than a young officer answering a call for help from someone who he personally knew had served the nation and wanted to run for office. Scott Rigell’s donation to Obama wasn’t 20 years ago, Bryan. It wasn’t even 20 months ago. And his $2000 donation to Mark Warner and $10,000 donation to support the tax hike initiative and $500 to another liberal add up to a huge question — “Was Scott Rigell really trying to contribute to Obama’s campaign to keep Hillary Clinton from winning . . . or was it a Rigell masterstroke to confuse Obama to keep him from knowing who he should support down here — Glenn Nye or Scott Rigell.
I believe that if you do your homework, Bryan, you will find that the only difference between Scott Rigell and Glenn Nye is that Glenn Nye DIDN’T contribute to Obama.
Bryan R, you ignorant slut . . .
It is worth noting that Bert called Rigell last night (before the mailer hit mailboxes today) to personally apologize for the mailing.
The lemon was a nice touch though.
That ad is a preview of what’s going to come out from Dems on Golden’s behalf if/when Rigell wins the nomination and Golden makes it a three-tier race.
@ Bryan R. Looks like LE supplied the missing info regarding one of your questions. Ouch!
Suggestion: Bert WILL be attending the candidate forum hosted by Steve Batton tomorrow (Thursday) morning on 1650 AM 7am-9am. I’m guessing this question will likely come up and Bert will answer directly.
You can listen via these links:
http://radiotime.com/station/s_97547/WPMH_670.aspx
http://www.stevebatton.com/
Unfortunately, I hear Scott “Bring it on/ I welcome a debate” Rigell is, once again, AWOL for another candidate forum? Were he attending, Scott could ask Bert directly. But instead of participation and head to head dialogue, Scotty is whining to his Facebook supporters tonight about the ‘high personal cost’ of running for office. Sigh – another data point/ indication as to what we can expect from him in the future, I guess?
@DJ – thanks for the info on the call. I’m not surprised to hear Scott got notice directly from Bert – it’s totally in line with his character.
The sad fact is that the drumbeat from all these ads are volatile fuel for future mass media and will come back reformatted for democrats.. whats old will be new again this fall. Here is what I mean, when people feel they have to answer when push polling begins and they want the caller to think they are not naive, they will make words in and out of context into what the media gurus know all too well can convert an undecided into a hardened “intelligent choice” and vulnerable voters may fall for it.
There are ancient sayings.. He who take pulse too often, make it race.. So, take a deep breath and go for a walk then read the rest of this monologue..
Welcome back from your walk.. let’s roll.
Few intelligent voters have faith in our institutions, scant faith in Congress or the White House, little faith in what is increasingly called “establishment” aka big government, business, media or establishment religion. For many of you, this seems schizoid. Many of you despise big media yet when you meet journalists you’re impressed, admiring and respectful of their opinions. You also respect most religious leaders while privately cynical about the institutionalized establishment they are part and parcel of.
It’s no secret that dems and republican voters hate congress yet they keep voting for congressmen.. I don’t know how to reconcile this. People don’t believe yet they take part, vote again and subject themselves to the same old problems all over again plus new ones.
So, for now people are centered on the arts, graduation and pursuing happiness but this fall when they turn their attention our way there will be choices to make.. The intelligent conservative choices better be obvious by then.
Bryan R—asking us about what Bert Mizusawa didn’t do doesn’t really speak to the points that Bert made about what Rigell DID do.
For those who have actually been trying to figure out who to vote for in this upcoming Primary, it is important to note that Ed Maulbeck has been asking for months the same questions about Scott Rigell that Bert Mizusawa and Ben Loyola are now openly posing during this final week of campaigning.
That says to me that Ed Maulbeck was way ahead of the rest of the candidates. I happened to hear Ed speak at a candidates’ forum early on in this race. He exhibited quite a bit of boldness when there was none and he clearly showed good judgement in asking these questions which are now important to so many.
A Congressman with good judgement mixed with some boldness would represent the 2nd District very well.
Speechifying and glossy advertising don’t particularly sway my vote. But a sense that a candidate can speak in a straightforward manner and consistently “get” what is important—that appeals to me.
I think Ed Maulbeck has those traits and that tells me he has the ability to be a good legislator. Isn’t that what we voters are trying to discern right now—which of these six folks will actually do GOOD things for America while they are in Washington?
On a lighter note, I have to add that I have enjoyed the “Vote for Ed” signs along the roadways. There may not be as many (they are rare enough that my kids have enjoyed counting “sightings” of Ed-signs), but they really stand out from the other candidates’ signs. They offer a good “picture” of my impression of Ed—straightforward and to the important point. (Did you hear Ed on the Tony Macrini show on Tuesday—WNIS? Good interview!)
As you have guessed by now, I have decided to take that advice and “vote for Ed.” And I know I am not alone in that decision. A surprising number of people I have spoken with lately have said they are switching their choice to Ed Maulbeck also. Go Ed!
Negative campaigning is so much fun.
The “General” and JR have class…all of it 3rd.
Mr. Rigell’s face on a lemon?
A non-quote “Thank you Scott Rigell”?
Late night apologies from “The General” to Mr. Rigell that feigned ignorance?
And, more free advertisement of the negative campaign flier on BD.
Or are you on AT this week JR?
You people are seeking perfection among men. You’ll never find it.
Ronald Reagan made mistakes, William F Buckley Jr made mistakes, Rush Limbaugh has made many mistakes, Ron Paul has made mistakes, Barry Goldwater has made mistakes.
The Founding Fathers were extremely wealthy and many owned slaves therefore how could they espouse ideals of freedom?
Benjamin Franklin when asked about his alleged illegitimate son who was the governor of Massachusetts at the time replied, “How is the little bastard?”
Thomas Jefferson loved the French… unthinkable today.
Albert Einstein refused to embrace quantum mechanics, which is the basis for all of today’s ideas on physics supplanting many of Einstein’s ideas.
Finally , Jim Tracy blew a call last night that kept Armando Gallaraga from a perfect game.
People make mistakes in life because they aren’t perfect. You must measure a man by the totality of who they are.
I hope you all would prefer to be judged that way by others. What if we were to pull 1/2 percent of one area of your life and extrapolate your character from it? I think you would say it was unfair. It would be a tremendously skewed perspective of Jay D, turbo, and Tim J. Likewise it would be unfair to infer the character of Bert Mizusawa and Ben Loyola in that manner. It would be for all of us.
Perspective.
Can anyone provide a link as to Rigell’s contribution to Mark Warner. I have looked at VPAP (under Warner, SR and Freedom Automotive, 97 – 10) and cannot find it.
I looked at Warner’s FEC report (07 & 08) and cannot find a contribution either (from SR himself or Freedom Automotive)
According to VPAP, Rigell gave $187,506 (1997 – 2010), $185,506 ALL to Republicans, and $2,000 to other, but NO Democrats.
Freedom Automotive (2005 – 2010) gave $4,240 ALL to Republicans and $4,010 to other (Car Association & Golf Tourney), but NO Democrats.
So, if someone can explain to me how Scott gave money to Mark Warner and Louise Lucas (stated many times on this blog), yet VPAP has no record of it, either coming from Scott or his business, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Ok, just found it (was under Freedom Ford, Inc.). Gave $1000 on 12/21/01 to Mark Warner. Strange, that the election was in November. Probablly for the inauguration, which a number of Republicans went to as well.
Also, Amerigroup gave $10k to the YES campaign as well (Jeff McWaters). No one seemed to have a problem with it, when he was elected as a state senator.
[...] candidate for the GOP nomination in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, has responded to direct mail and radio ads by his competitors regarding his $1000 donation to Barack Obama with a direct mail piece of his [...]
That’s because a Federal Judge ordered that Amerigroup pay a $190 Million fine and there was an additional $144 Million jury award for filing 18,000 false Medicaid claims in Illinois. The total fines and jury awards paid under this scandal were $334 Million.
The Amerigroup Board forced McWaters to “retire” as CEO on July 9, 2007 and now he’s another Virginia politician as well as a close personal friend and ally of Scott Rigell.
Rosemary Wilson pointed this scandal out way to late in the campaign, and with all the Obama mania going on at the time, it was lost in the noise. McWaters steamrolled and crushed Rosemary Wilson with the money he poured into the state Senate seat.
The $1,000 to Warner was insignificant pocket change but representative of an “Establishment” mindset to cover all the bases and put a future favor into the bank.
So, what Democrats has Ben Loyola supported?
… silence … crickets … wind blowing …
Did Ben Loyola donate to the the massive local tax ans spend/borrow & spend YES Campaign?
… silence … crickets … wind blowing …
Of course Ed didn’t either.
Don’t know about Jessica.
Kenny Golden – did he support Democrats or the Yes Campaign?
Anyone?
@ Reid and all – here’s a link to the the donor list:
Donor list to “Yes Campaign”:
http://www.vpap.org/committees/profile/money_in_donors/864
Let’s see here…
Freedom Ford, $10,000 and other democrats – Rigell
Amerigroup, $10,000 – McWaters
Loyola Enterprises … silence … crickets … wind blowing …
Ben Loyola… silence … crickets … wind blowing …
Benito Loyola … silence … crickets … wind blowing …
Tim J – Don’t forget that our extremely popular and strongly conservative Governor Bob McDonnell was in favor of the YES campaign and actually VOTED FOR the initiative. Looks to me like it was possible for good conservatives like Bob McDonnell (and Scott Rigell) to have supported the YES campaign at the time. Oh wait…I forgot…you don’t like Governor McDonnell since you’ve suggested that he can be “bought.” Again, I don’t think you’re doing Loyola any favors.
Who cares about Gov. McDonnell… last time I checked he wasn’t a candidate for 2nd District Representative.
Loyola doesn’t need any favors from anyone. Like Bert with his mail pieces, whoever put together his new video put “metal on target”.
http://hrblogs.typepad.com/the_shad_plank/2010/06/new-loyola-ad-hits-gop-frontrunner-rigell.html
Why such bitterness, Tim? Your whining is like when someone (Loyola) didn’t get picked by the cool and popular kid (Governor McDonnell) who is forming his team.
Bert’s mail pieces are ridiculous. Anyone with half a brain can see through them.
Anyone with “half a brain” knows that Gov. McDonnell isn’t running for Rep. in the Second District, or maybe you didn’t get the memo? Or maybe half of your brain skipped out on you and went on vacation and you still haven’t received the memo from the other half?
Bert did a great job of putting Rigell on the defensive in forcing Rigell to respond with with a radio ad defending “Cash for Obama”, as Loyola is calling it. Maybe Bert and Loyola are working on the same team?
By the way, the HR Tea Party went out with 21,000 robo calls this morning for Loyola, which included a courtesy call to Gov. McDonnell.
Tim J – From your mouth to God’s ears! Imagine the following: Saturday meeting with Ben, Bert, Ed, Jessica and Scott Taylor. No staffers, no managers – just the candidates. All put cards on the table and, at the end, walk out solidly behind ONE candidate. The force of this group – as a GROUP, would be insurmountable and an automatic game-changer on Tuesday.
I know I would lend full support to the pick of this group – who all know and respect each other – and I believe 90% of candidates’ supporters would do the same… with victory to the choice almost assured. Imagine the press coverage (local and national!) and the credibility this would lend to not just winner (in November election) but also to the strength and commitment of THE PEOPLE against the party brokers. AND the candidate group would win, and be recognized for true country-before-self action. Imagine the goodwill, credibility, and support that one incredibly selfless action would translate into in whatever they all chose to do next. I would personally campaign in any next election for any.
And … the party wins in November!
Again, From your mouth to God’s (and the candidates) ears!
Uhh… which “half of your brain” gave us the privilege of that last comment?
The half that texted you that’s on vacation on the Gulf Coast, or the half that got stuck back home with you?
Jay D, not meant for you… for LC who is having some trouble deconflicting a struggle that seems to be going on inside his head.
You are right, any of the candidates who could get through that gauntlet would get my unconditional support.
Perhaps Jason Miyares should remove his veil and stop commenting as LC.
Award of the Silver Star
for
Conspicuous Gallantry
in Action on the
Korean DMZ
(1984)
MIZUSAWA, BERT K.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Bert K. Mizusawa, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for exceptional valor and gallantry in action while serving as Commander of the Joint Security Force Company, United Nations Command Security Force at Panmunjom, Korea, on 23 November 1984. In reaction to thirty attacking North Korean soldiers in pursuit of a Soviet defector, Captain Mizusawa’s outstanding leadership and aggressive actions in leading his company while under fire were instrumental in defeating the enemy and ensuring the safety of the defector and other personnel in the United Nations Command sector of the Joint Security Area. He was responsible for providing sustained suppressive fires and stopping the enemy force with an M-203. Throughout the intense firefight, Captain Mizusawa displayed a complete disregard for his own personal safety while accomplishing his mission. Captain Mizusawa’s bravery and outstanding leadership under extremely hazardous circumstances are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflect great credit upon him, the United Nations Command and the United States Army.
Obvious,
Guaranteed that’s not Jason. You ‘obvious’ly don’t know Jason very well.
Jay D,
At this stage, even if all five candidates walked into a room and walked out endorsing Bert (which with the egos involved will never happen) or anyone else for that matter, they’d still lose.
That was a tact that needed to be done two months ago, not a week before the election.
Bill, you don’t happen to have a copy of the citation for the Air Medal with Combat ‘V’(Valor) for combat actions against Libya which President Reagan awarded to Lt.Jg Loyola? Or citations for high honors and awards which Scott Taylor and Ed Maulback may have won during their military service?
I have reviewed the candidates for Congress this primary election, and although I have, in the past, ordinarily gone against the mainstream in voting for the third-party candidate that most upholds the Constitution. In this election, I find myself again going against the mainstream, but this time it is because I am going to vote for the most qualified candidate. Mizusawa may not be perfect in his views as far as realistically decreasing central government but at the same time supporting job verification to suppress illegal immigration. However, the man is qualified, conservative, and an asset to our country and to our community. The only one to actually do what he promised in creating 5,000 in our area, his quote “reality vs rhetoric” rang in my ears. I am excited to see views like Loyola’s and Ed Maulbeck, but we need someone who can actually gain support from even the democrats to affect any real change, not just stand on a soap box and alienate people from the top down.
Bert Mizusawa you’ve got my vote tomorrow.
