More Congressional Endorsements for Rigell in VA-02, Including #3 Republican Leader
By D.J. Spiker | Sunday, May 16th, 2010 | Policy, PoliticsEndorsements from Rep. John Campbell (CA-48) and Rep. Mike Pence (IN-6) are coming this week. Mike Pence is the Republican Conference Chairman, the third-highest-ranking Republican leadership position (and one of my favorite dark horse 2012 candidates)

Has Bearing Drift endorsed Rigell or something?
Out of immediate-area endorsements mean absolutely nothing to me.
Next. Topic.
Shaun, how so? We’ve announced virtually every other Congressional endorsement; plus Rigell-related posts on average receive far more views/comments then any other. Giving the people what they ‘want’
Just looking around and it seems as if every third post is about something awesome about Rigell… I mean, I understand if we’re reporting “news” but it’s not like every endorsement in VA-05 or VA-11 has made it here.
Just observing is all. Maybe we can ease off the endorsements shtick and stick to real news? For instance, Rigell is getting pounded across FaceBook for contributions to Obama and Warner, and nary a peep here from VA-02 centric bloggers. Granted, some are attached to other campaigns… but that’s real news that’s really affecting Rigell’s chances.
Because that’s never been discussed on here before.
Understand the observation, like I said, generally I stick to Congressional (and McDonnell/Bolling obviously)
the facebook thing ‘looks’ like it’s affecting him, i suppose, but reality is Rigell looks to be on track to winning 50 – 60% on June 8th of the primary (recent polling numbers from another campaign)
It’s going to take a considerable scandal/issue to knock that number down, and the Obama donation is not it, no matter how many facebook ‘friends’ and BD commenters talk about it; given that the issue has been addressed at length on BD for roughly 8 or so months, short of something new coming to light or a major blunder on Rigell’s part, the only ‘news’ we’ll have from Rigell is endorsements (they’re sitting on more)
Mike Pence is a regular on Hannity! That is great news and news I want to hear about.
Show the poll #s DJ or shut up with your foolish rants and stories. You are obviously in the bag for Rigell, however you fail to see the reality. Your golden boy is in trouble. Have a nice big glass of koolaid
I’d be interested in poll numbers too, D.J. — I know Rasmussen is coming out with numbers in VA-05 this week.
Rigell is making a huge mistake thinking frontrunner status is going to protect him from donations to Obama and Warner. That’s going to be a killer with the base. The only hope there is that Mizusawa, Taylor, and Loyola split the anger between the three of them.
Shaun, as you have noticed, the “awesome” posts come more frequently as a reaction to aggressively probing Rigell and his businesses. Note the Rigell “Cash for Clunkers” Stimulus profits hypocrisy release by Loyola which resulted in the rushed endorsement by McDonnell and Bolling. Now we have Rigell’s “Chinagate” developing from his Volvo business and now up pops another post with some more endorsements.
It’s like the Rigell camp is trying to paper over weakness, issues and problems with endorsements. The subtle message to us 2nd District voters out here: “If Rigell is good enough for these guys, then he’s good enough for you.” Which is exactly why the Tea Party was born, to grow a grass roots Conservative alternative to this blatant “party establishment business as usual” behavior.
I wonder who I will endorse in the 2nd? Oh, yes. It’s coming.
JR, sounds like a great opportunity to wager on. Maybe we can get a “local bookie” (not DJ
to take some action on this.
I can’t wait to see your endorsement statement J.R.. Don’t keep us waiting too long.
D.J.,
I thought Ron Paul was your favorite ‘dark horse’ 2012 candidate?
@Shaun; Rigell has been endorsed by Morton Blackwell, Mike Farris, Kay Cole James and Jay Sekulow.
Because, all of those guys tend to endorse “moderate” Republicans.
If that’s not the “base” I don’t know what is.
D.J., didn’t you have a meet and greet for Rigell at your place? Or was that just a Young Republican meeting with Rigell there? Just thinking I remember that some time back? You are just like the rest of us, free to endorse or support who you wish. God bless America!
@Bryan –
I’ll bet you $10 they’re all reconsidering.

The problem with the $1000 contribution to Obama 08 by Mr Rigell is that this was not an isolated incident. There are other examples of questionable choices. He gave $1000 to Mark Warner who we all know incorporated the largest tax increase in Virginia history and he also gave 10k in support of a proposed massive regional sales tax increase. Obamacare, Cap and Trade, Stimulus, Cash for Clunkers…. But Mr Rigell is “perfectly fine” with his donation to Obama. If you use the analogy of a spy, Mr. Rigell worked 98% of the time for the CIA, but 2% of the time he provided the KBG with some support, would this be excusable, I think not. We need bold leaders and unwavering conservative principle to right the ship.
@Todd; to compare politics and political giving to the CIA (national security) is absurd.
To compare the $400,000+ that Rigell has donated to Republicans and conservatives to the less than 1% of his giving that has gone anywhere else is absurd.
If all of Rigell’s money donated was a dollar, over 99 cents has gone to the GOP and less than a penny to a Democrat.
How about this, if a Republican voted over 99% of the time the way I wanted to, I would be ecstatic.
Congratulations to Loyola for his endorsement by the Hampton Roads Tea Party.

@Bryan –
That’s like dropping a piece of cheese on the floor and claiming the five-second rule. I could think of a lot of things I wouldn’t touch if it had 1% of something in it.
Gross.
If that’s the best defense Rigell has against intellectual inconsistency is how much money he has, he’s done.
@Shaun: I guess Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling like to endorse liberals as well?
Ask Randy Wright.
“Former President Bill Clinton is coming to Norfolk in two weeks to campaign for Terry McAuliffe, his long-time friend and fundraiser who is running for governor. Norfolk Councilman W. Randy Wright, a McAuliffe supporter, said Clinton will be the guest speaker at a fundraiser at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel on May 14.”
Since I can’t bring myself to vote for Nye, I’m going to cast my vote for Rigell. Since he supported President Obama and the “cash for clunkers” program, I guess he is the best choice for this primary.
Who would ever have thought I’d vote for a car dealer? Not me for sure…
@Brian: So are you on the record saying the Governor endorses liberals?
And answer my question; do Bill Bolling, Morton Blackwell, Mike Farris, Kay Coke James and Jay Sekulow all endorse liberals?

Bryan R. Do you have the hiccups?
I didn’t say anything. I just told you to ask Randy Wright. Have you?
Loyola is claiming the Tea Party has endorsed him, but the only quote I have found from the Tea Party is from Karen Hurd, one of the local founders, providing a personal endorsement. Is Loyola’s claim a stretching of the truth or is there more info out there?
KS,
Loyola’s press release and contents never indicated that the Tea Party as a group endorsed him. It clearly (at least to me) said Tea Party Founder and inside the press release said HR Tea Party Founder. I never got the indication that he insinuated the group as a whole had endorsed him.
Loyola’s news release which I received says: “Tea Party Founder Endorses Ben Loyola for Congress”. In reading it is a personal endorsement from the Karen Miner-Hurd, founder and leader since the “Tea Party” isn’t registered as a political party. It’s kind of hard to try to pry Karen’s endorsement from the Tea Party because she is the founder and leader, but it was still her personal endorsement.
If you read her endorsement letter, she takes a couple of swipes at Rigell as the “establishment” candidate and which she justifies point by point on her Facebook page:
Many in the GOP establishment are supporting Rigell. Scott Rigell is a fine man in many regards. However, I am troubled by:
1) Rigell’s $1,000 donation to the Obama campaign. He couldn’t distinguish between Hillary Clinton and Obama?
2) $1,000 to Mark Warner’s campaign
3) $500 to Louise Lucas campaign
4) $10,000 to the YES campaign to raise taxes here in SE Virginia
5) Supported Flow Control legislation whereby government would control the flow of trash and limit the private sector’s ability to compete, which would have resulted in higher waste management costs.
6) Rigell received $444,500 in the Cash for Clunker’s Campaign.
@Brian: Gee, and why can’t you answer my question? Do Bill Bolling, Morton Blackwell, Mike Farris, Kay Cole James and Jay Sekulow all endorse liberals?
Bryan R.
Most schools teach remedial reading. Seek help. I answered your question about me. I’m under no obligation to answer your questions about lists of people and whom they might’ve endorsed. I suggest you call those people you are curious about and ask them yourself.
For those interested here is a link to Karens page with her permission to link back to it:

Tim J, did you make a remark that Rigell was responsible for a China company wanting to buy Volvo? And Bush is responsible for Hurricane Katrina right? Are you sure you’re not smoking that Earl Grey instead of drinking it?
Really, now go to the school nurse and tell her that your ADD is flaring up and causing confusion with reading, comprehension and vocabulary, and you need some of your special pills to help you think.
Then, after you take a little nap, go to your school counselor and tell her that the bad people in your head are shouting at you and are confusing you because other people are starting to think you are insane.
Tim J, I took your advice, she said that your voice is in her head too and it’s driving her crazy. Hey, I want to take you up on that $500 for a vowel offer. I would like to donate it to the candidate of your choice.
Brian Kirwin: Each word more useless than the next.
I cannot vote in this election, but I could not support Rigell nor Mizusawa. Both have big government taints that make them poisonous to our American form of government, which is for the people, by the people and of the people.
Big money should always prove to the people that they should not vote for big money candidates.
Small donations by small people should always win the election. Unless, as we all should know, those donations could have been laundered. It takes time to scout out the false donations, but it is worth it to make sure that the people will be served.
I agree with Cary. It seems as if Scott Taylor has the most individual donations by the people. Unfortunately, many people follow the big money. With the state of the country, it seems that people are waking up to that. Hopefully, that will continue through June 8th.
Yesterday’s debate forum at the Palace Theatre in Cape Charles was excellent. The people there were very friendly and down to earth. It reminded me of Iowa where I grew up. Unfortunately, only three candidates were present; Jessica Sandlin, Bert Misusawa, and Ed Maulbeck. Ben Loyola and Scott Rigell never had planned on attending and Scott Taylor (eastern shore native) canceled at the last minute. The eastern shore is often dismissed as a viable electorate of the 2nd district, but those who showed up obviously do not think so. I implore everyone to dismiss the candidates who did not attend this event. I am for Ed, though Jessica and Bert also deserve our respect for caring about the eastern shore as they do of every part of 2nd district. Ed Maulbeck for Congress!
“Don’t Tread on Ed, You’ll be Sorry!”
Cary and Ashley, in addition to editorials, I enjoy BD because vague and unsubstantiated charges are rarely left unquestioned here. I admire Scott Taylor’s service to country and to this campaign, and have expressed it to him personally. And, while not a Rigell supporter, I have never believed he is “poisonous to our American form of government”. I am a Mizusawa for Congress supporter.
Please provide detail as to why a first-in-class West Point graduate …Army Airbourn Ranger (the Army’s elite special op force)…Silver Star recipient (the Army’s 3rd highest combat decoration and only awarded for extraordinary heroism and valor in the face of enemy forces) …combat veteran of Iraq AND Afghanistan …Harvard educated in law and public policy (has studied and deeply believes in the founding principals of the constitution) …and one of only 13 candidates in the country (and the ONLY candidate in Virginia) to earn the coveted endorsement you’ll find here: http://bertmizusawa.com/?p=268
… is “poisonous to our American form of government, which is for the people, by the people and of the people.” I await your response.
Does Bert speak Spanish?
No sé. Porque tú preguntas?
Mercury,
Seeing as Rigell is a fairly substantial land owner on the Eastern Shore, as well as Taylor’s childhood ties to the Eastern Shore, that statement seems to be an indictment of Loyola more then anything else. Not exactly what Ed should be shooting for these days..
Spiker,
You’re right! Rigell should be able to skip a debate at the eastern shore because he owns land there. And Taylor should be able to cancel at the last minute because he grew up there. Loyola can just do whatever he wants as well. I never realized that the voters of the eastern shore are so accepting of being pushed aside in this way. You got me. Ed Maulbeck for Congress!
