The return of George Allen

Former U.S. Senator and Governor George Allen (R) has been quietly retooling for the past four years getting himself ready for another campaign against, potentially, U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D) in 2012 – if Webb wants to even run again.

More and more these days, we’re hearing from George Allen.

Case in point, today he will appear on Fox News’ “America’s News HQ”, live on set at 12:15PM, discussing the TEA Party movement and his participation in three Tax Day Rallies in Virginia.

You can read more from the Washington Examiner, NBC29, and WHSV about Allen’s barnstorming this past Thursday – but it is barnstorming nonetheless – something we haven’t seen like this from him since November 2006.

Of course, he did appear at an AFP rally on Virginia’s inauguration day, where he was kind enough to do an interview with us and sounded very much like a leader ready to be involved again, expressing his concerns over Washington’s “profligate spending”, lack of sound energy policy, the “cap-and-tax” program, among others.

He clearly was connecting with the audience when he spoke to AFP:

Part 1:

Part 2 (the part you should watch, if you have to choose, I think):

Allen hit hard on universal themes of limited government, lower taxes, and freedom, among others, but his approach was one that focused on national issues, not state issues – and this was on the date of Governor Bob McDonnell’s inauguration.

Allen, who launched and serves as chairman of the American Energy Freedom Center, is frequently sought out for his opinion on national energy issues and recently penned this commentary on President Obama’s offshore drilling plan.

While press releases from Allen’s office address him as “Governor George Allen”, his focus on national issues and continued prominence on national television strike me as one ready for a federal office once again.

His additional role in national campaigns, such as being National Co-Chairman of Fred Thompson’s Presidential Campaign and as an advisor to and surrogate for John McCain’s Presidential Campaign, show he’s still keenly involved in the federal scene.

Additionally, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling did not set aside his ambition to run for governor in 2009 because he wanted to run for U.S. Senate in 2012.

Bolling wants to be Virginia’s governor, and I would be shocked if Allen, who is a good friend of “Fireball” Bill, would derail Bolling from achieving this goal.

So, who is the Republican alternative to George Allen in 2012? Bob Marshall? Rob Wittman? Randy Forbes? Ken Cuccinelli?

All would represent Virginia well in the U.S. Senate from Virginia, but do they have the same political muscle as Allen to take on Webb? Certainly not right now.

Finally – six years is a longtime to get the proverbial “monkey” off Allen’s back. 2006 was a “change” election for Democrats, which likely had more to do with Allen losing than anything he said. But that is not going to be the mood of Virginia voters in 2012, as evidenced by how upset and motivated conservatives are for their own brand of revolution in 2010 and beyond. Voters are not going to care about what Allen said or didn’t say during the 2006 campaign – they’re going to look for a leader who has the political will and capability to stem the tide of overbearing Federalism into our personal lives; they’re going to be looking to someone who they can trust who can stand up to the President; they’re going to be looking for someone who can stand up on the national stage for freedom.

Allen, by attending TEA Parties, continuing to appear at events political and non-political across the commonwealth, creating and leading a national organization, remaining engaged in national politics, appearing on frequent TV interviews – all lead me to one conclusion: he’s running again – and running soon for one logical office – U.S. Senate.
