2nd District Republican Forum next Thursday, April 15
By | Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 | Politics

Next Thursday night at Old Dominion University, Kaufman Hall, Room 224, 7 p.m., candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in Virginia’s 2nd District will gather to debate taxes, higher education, national security, among others…and the questions come from you!

You can either join us live (first come – first serve) or stream us on U-Stream.

Tickets are available through each campaign, the ODU College Republicans, the Norfolk Republican Party, and the Norfolk – Portsmouth Young Republicans. BD will also have a few tickets at the door, but otherwise, it will be standing room only. Tickets will be mailed to the organizations today; they should have them before the end of the week.

Just got a little disappointing news today – Scott Rigell notified us that he will be attending an Urban League dinner instead of coming to the debate. Rigell was the first to respond to BD back in February that he’d try to make it, schedule permitting, but a recent personal invitation to this dinner made it too important to him to pass up. We’ll miss him.

Regardless, all the other candidates will be there and it will be great to hear their thoughts on a variety of issues.

Here are the rules:

1) Each candidate gets seven minutes to answer questions from you, the BD reader, on the issues of taxes, national security and higher education. Use this thread to leave your question and Shaun Kenney (podcast co-host and elected official in the 5th District), Alan Moore (new writer, journalist, and Northern Virginia resident), and myself will choose the best three or four to ask the candidates at the forum. I asked Shaun and Alan to help select because of their impartiality and expertise.

2) Each candidate will also submit to BD their question that they would like to ask each other. The question must be generic in nature and applicable to all the candidates.

3) Two people from the audience – a member of the ODU College Republicans and a member of the Norfolk GOP – will ask a question to the candidates.

All in all, this should be an exceptionally informative debate and I hope I can see as many of you there as possible. If you can’t be there, please be sure to stream it online!

Looking forward to reading your questions!

Kaufman Hall is located on the main campus side of the university across Hampton Blvd from the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Turn towards main campus on 45th Street (a right if you’re coming from the Naval Station, a left if coming from the Midtown Tunnel) and park in “Lot 20″. Kaufman is located next to Webb Center and is across the parking lot from the library.

Check out the map.

Thanks J.R. for letting us know about this important event. This will help me in my decision who to vote for and it’s a half a mile from my house. It’s a shame Mr. Rigell won’t be there but I am very interested in Kenny Golden and Bert Mizusawa and look forward to hearing them speak.

Question to the Candidates: All of you call for balancing the enormous budget and ending this unsustainable deficit. However, is it possible to do this when all you advocate for increased military spending, and less revenue through more tax cuts? If your answer involves “cutting wasteful spending”, I think you all owe it to the American people to be specific about how you what you would cut to balance the budget.

  3. James "turbo" Cohen April 6, 2010 14:16 pm

Scott Rigell won’t be there because he is attending an Urban League dinner.. ok, coalition building with democrats is a wise strategic move I have to admit.. that $1000 check to Obama will payoff handsomely, none of the other republican candidates had the forsight to buy votes from the left when Obama was pounding John McCain.

Scott, seriously now, a friend looked on the UL calendar and could not find a dinner event on the same date of the ODU event. Is this a private dinner with Jesse and Al? Just kidding Scott.. Per anonymous sources there is week long gap between any listed UL dinner and this ODU event.

Regrettably you do not appear too confident when on the same stage as some of the other candidates so am I making a false assumption that, yet again for the nth time, you do not want to put your campaign at risk of losing ground among moderate and conservative voters by openly debating the other republican candates at an open to the public forum? Not slamming you or your friends but calling it the way it appears to many people I have spoken with in the last few weeks.

Enjoy your dinner, savor every bite.. Were gonna miss you at ODU Scott.

Thanking you, (more likely your staff since I do not expect you to have the courage to reply on BD), in advance for your reply, T

  4. Bryan R April 6, 2010 15:01 pm

Yawn…….. My friend Cathie is on the Urban League Board and invited me to the same dinner; 6 to 8 on 4/15 to celebrate the National organization’s 100th Anniversary. It’s at the Quality Suites Lake Wright.

If you are going spout off, at least TRY to get your facts straight

  5. JR Hoeft April 6, 2010 15:28 pm

If possible, I’d like this thread to be for questions from readers that relate to national security, higher education, and taxes so that the BD reader can be a participant in this forum. Thanks.

  6. James "turbo" Cohen April 6, 2010 15:46 pm

    Thanks Bryan R.

Scotty, could you post a link to that event on the nul.org hampton roads calendar? Are you sure you are on the RSVP list?

If there are any candidates who would prefer to avoid confrontation with VA-02 constituents questions at the ODU debate and instead attend the NUL event, contact the Hampton Roads National Urban League at 627-0864 or email ceo Edith G. White at ewhite@ulhr.org

    Keeping it real

  7. Mike Barrett April 6, 2010 17:14 pm

Question: In view of the fact that Navy budgets will likely be restrained in the forseeable future, putting more stress on the Navy’s operational tempo, what strategy would you recommend that the Navy adopt to more rationally link our nation’s Naval operational assets with likely missions?

  8. kingsmoothie April 6, 2010 22:11 pm

Question: Since one-third of the Federal budget is funded with debt, is there anywhere in the world that the United States should reduce its military presence and just where in the Constitution is it allowed for U.S. military forces to be employed as a police force or a “global force for good?”

  9. Wally Erb April 6, 2010 22:21 pm

Question: What one question would you like to ask of another candidate on the dias? (Candidate asked responds)

  10. JR Hoeft April 6, 2010 22:43 pm

Wally…from the rules of the debate as listed in the post:

    2) Each candidate will also submit to BD their question that they would like to ask each other. The question must be generic in nature and applicable to all the candidates.

Please submit a question that relates to higher education, national security or taxes. Thanks!

  11. James "turbo" Cohen April 6, 2010 22:58 pm

Wally, I want ask every candidate at on the dais:

    A. Will you candidate X carry the legal proceedings forward as our congressman to support a motion for a through transparent audit of the fed? (if the answer is no, please drop out of the race tonight)

    B. If you answered NO and chose to pull out of the race today, which candidate do you feel would have the most effective influence for a positive outcome among the few wavering house dems who favor relocating a vital component of the Carrier fleet operations away from our region?

I would also like to present these same questions to candidates not present on the 15th, their answers can be posted right here..

    Respectfully, T

  12. Mike Barrett April 7, 2010 09:02 am

Question: The tactic of unified opposition to health care reform failed. Now that health care reform is the law of the land, what concrete steps wouold you take to reduce costs for the delivery of health care?

  13. Mike Barrett April 7, 2010 09:09 am

Question: The creation and sustainment of an educated and intelligent work force at all levels of sociey is prerequisite to prosperity. What is the appropriate role of the federal government in stimulating and encouraging a cost effective system of education that creates the workers of the future in a globally competitive environment?

  14. Citizen for Civility April 7, 2010 09:18 am

With regards to pro-life. Much rhetoric is delivered on the Right to Life. What will you do to ensure the suport net, financial and emotional, is available to those who chose life over abortion?

  15. ROBERT April 7, 2010 09:40 am

Much federal and state spending seems to be driven by Congress ignoring or circumventing the 10th admendment. Will you stand with Virginia or the federal government?

  16. Govgirl April 7, 2010 09:55 am

Question: This week one of President Obama’s economic advisors hinted that a VAT (Value Added Tax) to reduce the deficit and pay for new entitlements. Would you fight the implementation of such a tax and if so, how.

Question: Would you vote to defund HCR as a way of killing it should the GOP not have enough votes to override a Presidential veto?

  17. Kathy Mateer April 7, 2010 16:50 pm

What would be your game plan as a Congressperson to keep our Navy ships here in Hampton Roads? What would be your game plan to not just keep but bring jobs to our area?

  18. Don April 7, 2010 19:03 pm

Question: HR1951, the Family Education Freedom Act proposes to amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow a tax credit of up to $5,000 per student per year for the cost of attendance at any educational institution (including any private, parochial, religious, or home school) organized to provide elementary or secondary education, or both. Why would you support or not support this Bill? More generally, what role should the federal government play in K12 and higher education?

  19. Don April 7, 2010 19:14 pm

HR25, the Fair Tax Act, repeals the income tax, employment tax, and estate and gift tax. Imposes a national sales tax of 23% on consumption. Allows a monthly sales tax prebate for families meeting certain size and income requirements. Prohibits the funding of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after FY2013. Has provisions for the repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Will you support HR25, the Fair Tax Act?

  20. James "turbo" Cohen April 7, 2010 20:20 pm

All these great questions and Rino Rigell will not be present.. Another charade. What’s the point folks? Rigell has the biggest pot of money and the endorsements.. of course he won’t attend this debate, it can only work against him right now. Do any of you really believe that the power elite of the republican party in VB or the state for that matter gives a damn about who is vying for the top spot at this debate? Of course not, their guy Scotty boy will not be in attendance. Stop fooling yourselves.. Rigell is laying golden eggs and wooing democrats at events like the dinner hosted by the national urban league and who knows where else because this is about he who hands out the money wins and out manuevers the primary wins.. screw the voters. GOP party bosses are feeding at the trough again and people are sick and tired of this type of politically motivated manipulation of, for and by candidates.

JR, please forgive me but without Rigell at this great debate answering these questions alongside the rest of the lineup this is but a mock debate to keep the uninformed masses quiet until after their chosen one walks away with the nomination after the June primaries.

  21. SuperChicken April 7, 2010 21:19 pm

    Turbo, AMEN MY BROTHER!

  22. Tim J April 7, 2010 23:04 pm

With all of this “moderate, working both sides of the aisle bipartisanship” campaigning, maybe Rigell will get Nye’s endorsement for the Primary. After his performance at the Eastern Shore debate where his handlers don’t need another “Obama without the prompter” incident, in addition to blowing off the Virginia Beach Republican Women, the Tidewater Community College Republicans and now the Bearing Drift debate, there is an arrogance emerging in Rigell similar to what we have seen recently with arrogant Democrats in Congress.

Maybe his polling has him so far ahead that we don’t matter.

  23. BigBlue April 7, 2010 23:15 pm

How did he blow off the TNCC Cr’s?

  24. Tim J April 7, 2010 23:23 pm

BigBlue, didn’t show up to a scheduled event.

  25. James "turbo" Cohen April 8, 2010 00:03 am

Motion to relocate the debate to Regent: say “I” or “nay”

  26. Daniel J Spiker April 8, 2010 03:19 am

Turbo, your thoughts previously were insightful and worth discussion. This newer side to you over the last week is disappointing, in regards to your attacks on multiple candidates. I hope you’ll get back on track soon. And if you’d like a Regent debate, please begin planning on it. This event will take place at ODU; you have no idea of the logistics involved.

TimJ, when was the scheduled event? Mercury didn’t contact me about it (not saying it’s not true, but I could have assisted as I’ve offered numerous times); additionally, since Mercury endorsed Golden’s campaign seemingly on behalf of the TCC CRs, what might be the point for any candidate to show up?

  27. James "turbo" Cohen April 8, 2010 07:52 am

Daniel, The following thoughts lack insight and are not worth discussion. I’m the same guy I was when I first visited this forum but the apparent dynamics of this primary have changed my outlook very recently. Thanks for noticing without writing about it. As far as the ODU event, I think it is a great venue! I used to work right there in the same building for the dean of engineering at odu during the early to mid 90′s and I know there is a minefield of political interest on campus. My comment to move the event to Regent is a softball gesture to the political elite, as if the gop does not have any lol.. Please Daniel :D you make me weak man.

Somewhere between 10,000 – 30,000 voters will decide who wins the primary then hardball season begins. Turbo:6.8.10 Thou shalt not BS thyself. May I suggest that you poll a statistically significant number of likely senior conservative voters. Nye beats Rigell in the general, Scott is the weaker candidate.. you know it, I know it, the party knows it. As every candidate knows, it is seniors who encompass the most likely demographic turnout at the polls. After you make the rounds for yourself, check back. Then take into consideration how our primaries are being influenced by endorsments at this early stage. Power, money, political movers & shakers and party suits decide who their man is this early, not voters, and whammo.. the other candidates are left spinning their wheels no matter how qualified or unqualified they are. (Where seniors get their news and voting guides are in play)

Several esteemed candidates boldly lied about their past and their platform.. Our senior voters may have been born at night but it wasn’t last night. A fresh new round of BS is now being floated around on candidates flyers that is not true and the old dogs retired from the military can read right through the bull$hit with 20/20. Big bold BS pie, piles of it.. and the head honchos at the local and state level lacking spine or BS repellent are not demanding a fair and transparent primary to help voters identify the most viable candidate.. And that is a problem a whole heck of a lot of voters are sensing Daniel. Pick up a phone, grab a clip board, walk the neighborhoods, retirement communities and small businesses polling likely senior voters and the picture they paint is worth a thousand words.. this primary is rigged from the start by influential insiders and many senior constituents know that instinctively. Some of the old dogs aint so stupid.. got to give them some credit, they have had the wool pulled over their eyes by political cliques more times than you and I have voted combined.

This is the type of bs that is a calling card for tea party groups to descend. They will lay the local vagop players club bare and expose the hipocracy of not vetting republican candidates after their bs detection supporter networks catch wind of the bs brewing in the 2nd.

Not all dogs drink from the same koolaid bowl Daniel.

  28. Citizen for Civility April 8, 2010 09:31 am

I guess we are done with questions from the audience now.

  29. Bryan R April 8, 2010 09:40 am

Rigell has done 5 debates, whats all the fuss?

And if he’s the weaker candidate why did Nye have a Democratic tracker (i.e. video man) at his Young Professionals for Rigell event last night? I haven’t seen anyone from the Democratic side video taping any other Republican?

  30. JR Hoeft April 8, 2010 10:06 am

    C4C – I sure hope not.

Whether Rigell is there or not doesn’t bother me that much – and I’m the moderator. It just means the other candidates will have more time to make their case.

  31. Don April 8, 2010 10:39 am

Question: The Tax Policy Center, a Washington research organization, recently stated that 38% of tax filers paid no income tax in 2007 and 49% paid no income tax in 2008. For 2009, they estimate that 40% of tax filers will make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment. What, if anything, would you do to change this tax system?

  32. Don April 8, 2010 10:46 am

Question: What, if anything, should the federal government do to stop Iran’s development of nuclear weapons?

  33. James "turbo" Cohen April 8, 2010 11:16 am

IMO, the forum at ODU will be THE turning point for the primary. I expect 2 or 3 candidates to bail shortly afterwards. There is a lesson here, Chuck Smith knew when to hold em and when to fold em.. ironically Chuck is more qualified and better suited than several candidates in this primary.. Not an endorsment, an observation.

Bryan R, The dems and tea’s are browsing the menu and the tea’s G2 is damning. All the candidates have now popped up on their network radar and they are forecasting weather unsuitable for routine arming conditions.

Turbulence closing in on doppler.. just sit back in that chair my boy, cinch down on that belt tensioner, put your tray in the upright position and hang on, there is going to be a bumpy ride ahead. Just relax, remain calm and maintain safe airpeed.. trim off at altitude.. don’t fight the weather and let the rudder feedback tell you what this bird needs you to do. Barf bag is in the pouch under your left knee if you need it.

  34. Kathy Mateer April 8, 2010 12:35 pm

An email has been flying around like crazy. People are furious over the recently passed health care bill. Question: What is your response over the content of this email:

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution

“Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States.”

  35. Jay D April 8, 2010 13:02 pm

Question for candidate: If efforts to ‘kill the bill’ are successful and there is opportunity to start over, how would your HC plan look different? And, is it a plan that could be reasonably expected to pass, without a Republican super majority? This question assumes: 1) cut waste/fraud, 2) tort reform, and 3) allowing purchase across state borders are included in your plan; please discuss other ideas of HC reform you feel would reduce HC costs and expand coverage to working families.
    __________

Also, I would like to purchase tickets for the Urban League event. Unfortunately, cannot find information on Scott Rigell’s events page or on ULHR’s events calendar. http://www.ulhr.org/mserver/Events.aspx

Details provided by Bryan R don’t match UL’s web site, which has tickets for the MAY 21st 100-year celebration event (at the Renaissance in Portsmouth), but nothing on the 15th @ Lake Wright. http://www.ulhr.org/mserver/

Yawn…….. My friend Cathie is on the Urban League Board and invited me to the same dinner; 6 to 8 on 4/15 to celebrate the National organization’s 100th Anniversary. It’s at the Quality Suites Lake Wright. If you are going spout off, at least TRY to get your facts straight

  36. Richard Jenkins April 8, 2010 16:16 pm

I humbly suggest that Turbo and all the others who fear that Rigell is avoiding their devastating questions take up Rigell’s suggestion on his web site and call the man. Did you see he was written up in Newsweek about that? earned media for taking a leadership stand-a unique leadership stand that stems from his business background. You can reach him in the office, at home or at countless other personal appearances-including next Monday night’s VB Mass Meeting. You can get your answers from Scott Rigell directly.

As for him taking time and posting on a blog-you’re nuts. Candidates need to be doing two things-meeting voters and raising money. Unfortunately this means staying out of blog pissing contest-but there are enough of us Rigell supporters to stand up for him-and we’re not paid staffers. My wife will attest to that.

I was part of the host committee for last night’s Young Professionals for Rigell event. We had over eighty young professionals-most of whom had never attended a political event. They are new people engaging in political activity due to the toxic and dangerous climate today. Most are Gen X or Gen Y meaning they are naturally apprehensive about all politicians. I heard several questions asked of Scott last night, many of these same questions posed here. My sister-in-law told me-”I thought he’d be like all those other political guys, but he wasn’t. He answered my question directly without hesitation-(She asked about defunding healthcare if that is the only option to stopping Obamacare).” Scott also opennned up the floor for questions with a Nye videograher six feet in front of him. Scott Rigell is not hiding from anyone-he looked straight in that videographers camera and respectfully challenged Nye’s leadership-it was great to see. Rigell is out expanding our party and voters-I hope the others are doing the same because the base of any one party has never won any general election. All you campaign managers reading this stuff incessantly please take note.

What you posters seem to lack is first hand knowledge. I’m not being elitists. i’m just exasperated. we worked hard to get 80 people out last night. every campaign works hard-where are you if you haven’t heard Rigell answer most of these questions yet? Seriously-what have you been doing to this point? the more I read from you guys the more evident it becomes-get out there guys, So Rigell misses one debate-theere are countless other opportunities to talk to the man. Ask your questions , and post your impressions-under your real name-and let’s advance this contest together. Let’s take politics to an open honest level. it can be done, but too many of you refuse to hold yourselves to the same standards as you hold your candidates-it’s sad to me as a party activist.

I got nothing for respect for Turbo-he pulls no punches and posts under his name. I like that; however, you’re logic is sorely lacking. Plus you have an irrational fear of Rigell-it comes across as bitterness toward welthy people. Ask limbaugfh about wealth envy-he makes the best arguments against it that i’ve heard. I’m still trying to figure out the envy and angst that flows from so many of you guys when it comes to Rigell. It seems irrational.

I hope to see you all at the VB Mass Meeting next Monday at LETA 7pm. All candidates will speak, but no questions will be asked from the floor. All candidatres will be available for your questions. I guarantee you’ll get more form looking them in the eye when you ask a question as opposed to hiding behind a post.

My question for the candidates at the forum-how do you propose raising the money necessary to defeat an incumbant in Glen Nye?

    Diatribe complete for now.

  37. James "turbo" Cohen April 8, 2010 18:36 pm

Full disclosure, I am a satisfied customer of Scott Rigell, he runs one of the finest auto dealerships in Virginia. I have bought several vehicles and after this primary will likely buy more. If you are shopping for a Ford, visit Scotts dealership after you visit the others. Scott and his team run a great car business. Bbusiness id business but this is politics and many a BS detector is going beep beep beep here in Va-02.. Richard, lets be frank, your intentions are honorable and you come across as a decent guy. With all due respect, your candor is appreciated.

Lets have dinner with Scott. Lets also invite all the delegates and republican powerhouses who have thrown the remaining candidates who are imagining they have a shot at winning the primary under the gop bus. No can do.. Only a few Leaders are in this race who have not done the liar pants on fire routine and they have my respect. This explains why Rigel is in a waiting game.. He is wise.. let the others piss away their money and sink together and steer clear of debates.. is the message from republican insiders?

You mentioned the vb mass mtg will not have questions from the floor.. so um, more prepared bullshit for the naive smiling koolaid generation. No offense but what good is it to look them in the eye if attendees cant move my lips. Scott opened up the floor in hi solo venue.. so nice of you.. This is also Obama style.

Real leaders can take real questions from real people and dont need to prepare before replying if they know the territory. THAT is the issue pal. We have a bunch of candidates and one or two know the territory and have no need for a teleprompter or prepared speech given eye to eye.

Leadership is a social engagement in real time with real people with real concerns. Leaders create a venue for people to do the extraordinary work that is so lacking within the present virginia 02 district. Our next leader had damn well better have the right stuff or the socialist democrats steam roll over hampton roads.

Lets do lunch next week with Scott, ok Richard.

  38. Jay D April 8, 2010 18:43 pm

Richard Jenkins: If your response was targeted at my question, you overcompensated.

If Scott Rigell chooses not to attend the BD forum, which will give candidates an “unprecedented” time (7 minutes) to respond and question each other, that is certainly his choice. It’s completely understandable why JR’s forum setup might not be attractive to all campaigns; there are safer venues, to be sure.

MY question was fairly simple: What is the Urban League link to buy tickets to the April 15th Urban League Dinner?

Unfortunately, your non-answer, regardless of length, indicates (perhaps?) the Rigell campaign’s RSVP/regret may not be completely truthful? Hopefully, one of his non-paid volunteers will have a moment to post, before it builds any more negative steam?

For all of the rest, congratulations on your turnout last night, thanks for expanding the party, and especially the youth vote. Many Gen X and Gen Y’rs fell for ‘Hope and Change’ and now have their B—S— meters turned way up.

Speaking of which, yes, I did “see he was written up in Newsweek about that? earned media for taking a leadership stand-a unique leadership stand that stems from his business background.”

I believe you meant to report … it was a blog site, not the magazine (Newsweek’s The Gaggle). Ben Adler wrote a tongue in cheek piece titled “Representative Pothole”, which was based on Matthew Yglesias’ blog titled ”Tomorrow’s Flip-Flop Today” (with a pic of the Rigell family), and both called Rigell’s campaign promise “a gimmick”. Plus, there are 25 comments following the story, with most laughing at Rigell (and Tidewater). Is this the Newsweek piece you referred to? Or is there another Newsweek write-up I missed?

    http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/2010/04/06/representative-pothole.aspx

    http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2010/04/tomorrows-flip-flop-today.php

We Gen Xs may lack “first hand knowledge”; we ARE technically adept and know how to use search engines to locate source material.

  39. Richard Jenkins April 8, 2010 22:17 pm

Turbo-I can’t do lunch, but I can do breakfast. I can call Scott Rigell and you me and anyone else here can have breakfast with him in his office-limit eight people. It usually goes from 7 or 7:30am for about an hour. You can ask him whatever you want and Scott will reply honestly and directly. Give me a call at my cell phone 757-620-2611.

I make this offer to Turbo and all my BD cohorts. We can have a civil discussion. It’s easily done.

  40. James "turbo" Cohen April 9, 2010 09:51 am

    Richard, Yes to breakfast..

Meeting at Scotts business is something I have done a few times in the past and I bought a new Ford each time. With all due respect, I am not in the market for a new car right now..

Lets meet thursday at Old Dominion University in the Lolly Cohen Atrium (between the engineering buildings) at 7 a.m. so there will be no people limit of 8. Call me anytime at 757-620-5536 and lets make this happen. If thursday is not convenient lets agree to a public location where the comman man or woman can join us. I know a nice retirement community that would love to sink their dentures into breakfast together.

    Respectfully, Turbo

  41. Richard Jenkins April 9, 2010 10:20 am

    Turbo-
    Left you a message,

I don’t work for the campaign, although I volunteer enough that I can call the scheduler and set up breakfast at the campaign office. FYI the meeting would be at the First Colonial Rd Campaign office. Scott has turned over complete operational control of the dealerships to James Church.

Breakfast stands for anyone else. Please take me up on it.

I’ll get in touch with you Turbo and try to set up something.

Richard, neutral open to the public location, not a campaign office.
I will be driving to a meeting on a hill for the next four hours.. call anytime after 11:30.

Richard Jenkins: Thank you kindly for the breakfast invite. My issue is not about access, but rather related to hubris similar to that shoveled daily from DC that assumes a stupid electorate, to whom lies (or small fibs) don’t matter. They do.

Should any candidate prefer a private dinner to BD’s forum, and they man-up with candor, we have a non-issue. It’s the subterfuge regarding dinner specifics (100-year celebration, open to the public, etc.) and old-school evasion tactics that offend.

In my business, the phrase “perception IS reality” rules.

The perception left by not participating in BD’s forum (compounded with lame excuse) is: either the candidate, or his campaign, prefer safer, uncontested, private, and scripted environments … and deem their candidate not ready to compete with the big-dogs. Hopefully, the Rigell campaign will reconsider.

  44. James April 9, 2010 12:32 pm

There has not been a debate to date, they have all been forums. The first actual debate, where tough questions will be asked to and from Rigell and he cannot handle the pressure. That sounds like it would be two damn long years in Washington for the guy.

Richard, I don’t care how long your response is, any of the candidates would sit down in a controlled environment to court voters over coffee, tea, or a beer. Especially when you can afford the nicest of amenities for anyone coming to your kingdom. The minute Rigell is out of his comfort zone, he bails, not cool.

    Again,
it appears the “questions from the audience” part of this post is no longer valid.

I must admit, I am rather shocked at the profanity used by those who appear to be literate individuals.

Our current Congressman has on several occassions placed the needs and concerns over that of his party. If you are elected and the GOP is either in the majority and it is a major piece of legislation that is important to the party but the consitituents in the 2nd district do you not agree with and can do harm to but the party leaders come to you and tell you that they can not pass this bill without your vote. Will you vote with the party or with the district?

  47. Dodo April 14, 2010 13:18 pm

    Simple question:

Is it ever okay to raise taxes? If not, why not? If so, under what circumstances?

  48. kingsmoothie April 14, 2010 14:01 pm

I like Dodo’s question. I would like to discuss it more, but since the request is for questions only, I will just say “ditto”. Ditto.

  49. Phil Fleming April 14, 2010 16:15 pm

People in the 2nd Congressional District need to know how Federal Legislation affects their lives.

Can You explain, in layman’s terms, any specific house bills pending before Congress, which will benefit the rank & file in the 2nd Congressional District?

  50. James "turbo" Cohen April 15, 2010 13:04 pm

    Do you support Term limits?
