Scott Rigell just can’t buy a break.
Last week, Ken Golden brought Rigell’s past donations to the Yes! campaign and Barack Obama to light at the Virginia Beach GOP Saturday Morning Breakfast.
Earlier this week Ben Loyola and Scott Taylor became embroiled in a controversy with him over identical congressional reforms.
Then he announced that the Mayor of Virginia’s largest city was giving him the nod. Unfortunately, Mayor Sessom’s appeared on a campaign flyer with the president (albeit not with his knowledge), reminding everyone of Rigell’s “Operation Chaos” donation.
Now, today, the Virginian-Pilot has this diddy on the very day Rigell received the actual endorsement from Sessoms:
Sessoms has advocated a “revenue-neutral” budget in recent months, meaning that to make up for the drop in property values and to keep next year’s budget flat, the city would have to generate new revenues and increase tax rates.
The mayor has argued that even if the city raised the tax rate, residents would still pay less in taxes than in 2009-10 because assessments have dipped so drastically.
The mayor might be correct, but Rigell already has the dirty word “moderate” associated with him, to a certain extent.
This endorsement can hardly help him move away from that label.
Of course, winning elections is about building coalitions. And, from what I understand, several strong conservatives are lining up for the Rigell campaign, including Mike Farris and Morton Blackwell.
