What Will It Take for Glenn Nye to Vote Yes on Health Care?
By | Saturday, March 20th, 2010 | Policy

With the clock ticking on health care and Nancy Pelosi determined hell or high water to pass health care, even if means giving up the House and Senate in November, the few remaining undecideds are receiving the focus. Glenn Nye is one of those undecideds. He voted ‘no’ in November, what will it take for Pelosi & co to get a yes vote out of him? One thing comes to mind:

Carrier(s).

Pelosi strong-arms the Florida delegation to accept Virginia’s plea deal: health care gets a vote and Hampton Roads keeps one (or two) carriers.

From what I’m hearing, not outside the realm of possibility. Just need a catchy name for it, like the Cornhusker Kickback and the Louisiana Purchase.

Glenn Nye needs to understand the ramifications of his choice should he make a very bad decision and vote against the will of the American people. According to the polls as of today, 55% of the American people oppose the current health care bill.

This is an Indianapolis doctor’s letter to Sen. Bayh about the Bill. Dr. Stephen E. Fraser, MD practices as an anesthesiologist in Indianapolis, IN.

    Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government’s proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.

I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Page 22 of the HC Bill: Mandates that the Govt will audit books of all employers that self-insure!!

Page 30 Sec 123 of HC bill: THERE WILL BE A GOVT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get.

Page 29 lines 4-16 in the HC bill: YOUR HEALTH CARE IS RATIONED!!!

Page 42 of HC Bill: The Health Choices Commissioner will choose your HC benefits for you. You have no choice!

Page 50 Section 152 in HC bill: HC will be provided to ALL non-US citizens, illegal or otherwise.

Page 58 HC Bill: Govt will have real-time access to individuals’ finances & a ‘National ID Health card’ will be issued! (Papers please!)

Page 59 HC Bill lines 21-24: Govt will have direct access to your bank accounts for elective funds transfer. (Time for more cash and carry)

Page 126 Lines 22-25: Employers MUST pay for HC for part-time employees ANDtheir families. (Employees shouldn’t get excited about this as employers will be forced to reduce its work force, benefits, and wages/salaries to cover such a huge expense.)

Page 239 Line 14-24 HC Bill: Govt will reduce physician services for Medicaid Seniors. (Low-income and the poor are affected.)

Page 280 Sec 1151: The Govt will penalize hospitals for whatever the Govt deems preventable (i.e…re-admissions).

Page 298 Lines 9-11: Doctors: If you treat a patient during initial admission that results in a re-admission — the Govt will penalize you.

Page 317 L 13-20: PROHIBITION on ownership/investment. (The Govt tells doctors what and how much they can own!)

Page 317-318 lines 21-25, 1-3: PROHIBITION on expansion. (The Govt is mandating that hospitals cannot expand.)
Page 321 2-13: Hospitals have the opportunity to apply for exception BUT community input is required. (Can you say ACORN?)

Page 335 L 16-25 Pg 336-339: The Govt mandates establishment of=2 outcome-based measures. (HC the way they want — rationing.)
Page 341 Lines 3-9: The Govt has authority to disqualify Medicare Advance Plans, HMOs, etc. (Forcing people into the Govt plan)

Page 354 Sec 1177: The Govt will RESTRICT enrollment of ‘special needs people!’ Unbelievable!

Page 379 Sec 1191: The Govt creates more bureaucracy via a “Tele-Health Advisory Committee.” (Can you say HC by phone?)

Page 425 Lines 4-12: The Govt mandates “Advance-Care Planning Consult.” (Think senior citizens end-of-life patients.)

Page 425 Lines 17-19: The Govt will instruct and consult regarding living wills, durable powers of attorney, etc. (And it’s mandatory!)
Page 425 Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3: The Govt provides an “approved” list of end-of-life resources; guiding you in death. (Also called ‘assisted suicide.’)(Sounds like Soylent Green to me.)

Page 427 Lines 15-24: The Govt mandates a program for orders on “end-of-life.” (The Govt has a say in how your life ends!)

Page 429 Lines 1-9: An “advanced-care planning consultant” will be used frequently as a patient’s health deteriorates.

Page 429 Lines 10-12: An “advanced care consultation” may include an ORDER for end-of-life plans.. (AN ORDER TO DIE FROM THE GOVERNMENT?!?)

Page 429 Lines 13-25: The GOVT will specify which doctors can write an end-of-life order.. (I wouldn’t want to stand before God after getting paid for THAT job!)

Page 430 Lines 11-15: The Govt will decide what level of treatment you will have at end-of-life! (Again — no choice!)

Page 469: Community-Based Home Medical Services = Non-Profit Organizations. (Hello? ACORN Medical Services here!?!)

Page 489 Sec 1308: The Govt will cover marriage and family therapy. (Which means Govt will insert itself into your marriage even.)

Page 494-498: Govt will cover Mental Health Services including defining, creating, and rationing those services.

Senator, I guarantee that I personally will do everything possible to inform patients and my fellow physicians about the dangers of the proposed bills you and your colleagues are debating.

Furthermore, if you vote for a bill that enforces socialized medicine on the country and destroys the doctor-patient relationship, I will do everything in my power to make sure you lose your job in the next election.

    Respectfully,

    Stephen E. Fraser, MD

Kathy, we checked this letter out using Snopes.com and this letter originated last April for a previous version of the Health Care bill. A lot of it is still valid, a lot of it doesn’t apply, however, the current bill they are considering is even worse.

  3. Kathy Mateer March 20, 2010 11:16 am

Thanks Tim, a grass roots friend forwarded this to me yesterday. It’s scary that the current one is even worse. I would like to know what no longer applies and what has been added to make it worse.

I think we have very little hope of Nye sticking to his previous “no” vote. What reason does he have to withstand what I’m sure is a barrage of attention and arm-twisting?

He’s got 7 or 8 Republican hopefuls lining up to fight it out with him in his first bid for re-election. If he votes against the bill, I don’t expect all those guys to just go away and all the Republican faithful would check his name in the November election.

If he votes against the bill tomorrow, he may even face a challenger from the left, who will be able to rant and rave about his votes against health care and other liberal legislation. If he votes for the bill tomorrow, I’m not even sure he’ll win back the support from the left that he’s lost with a few controversial votes in his first year.

It appears that he will be out of a job as our Congressional representative come November unless he does something totally shocking and unexpected. DJ mentions carriers, which I think might be a good bet. Another option, which is admittedly less likely, is that he could tell Pelosi that he’ll be a yes vote, and then the day of the vote he could switch to no. He’d actually be THE GUY who killed this bill. He would then clearly have to switch his affiliation to Republican, but he could run in the Republican primary this summer as the ONE who killed this version of health care reform.

  5. laura March 20, 2010 15:04 pm

Brad- Nye will not run as a Republican and would NEVER win a GOP nomination – he’s violently pro-choice and has voted to expand SCHIP, to raise taxes and for a number of other huge Democratic priorities. Oh and he voted for Pelosi to be speaker…Duh!!! You’re either politically inept or dumb. Neither one of these choices is good for your future as a political prognosticator.

  6. JR Hoeft March 20, 2010 16:04 pm

laura – ad hominem attacks are not necessary. You made your point without having to stoop to name calling.

  7. Kathy Mateer March 20, 2010 20:11 pm

I agree JR, name calling no matter what gender is unbecoming. For example:

Losing two carriers will be a hefty blow to our local economy. I don’t even want to think about what that loss would do to an already suffering housing market, real estate taxes, sales taxes, etc.

    However, let me say this:

If I had to pick between losing two carriers or being faced with this bill, I’d say good-bye to those carriers without hesitation.

Therefore, if Nye cuts some perverse deal of “our way of life” for two carriers, he should be chased out of town with torches and pitchforks.

On the other hand, I hate to break this to ya, but if he holds the line and stands for freedom…….yet again, I’d have to support him. You can give me all the crap about him voting for Pelosi (cuz as a Dem. he had to), and even that he’s pro-choice, but if he has the stones and defends us against this unfathomable harm to our way of life, I have to support him. And as far as Pro-Choice goes, don’t forget, if he stops this bill, your tax dollars won’t be directly funding abortions! Even many pro-choice people find the very idea of tax dollars paying for abortions to be obscene. Surely, a Pro-Life Republican would appreciate stopping this bill. On all of the big issues so far, he’s voted how we needed him to. Even as a Democrat, he represented our area better than many.

I don’t give a rat’s behind what party he’s in if he votes the way he has been. Good representation deserves being re-hired.

Clearly the Tea Party movement is focused on principle and not what team you’re on. Nye has that to look at.

Nye does have incentive to continue the “No” streak. He’s already damaged himself with his party. At this point, and in this district, his best chance at re-election is to stay the course and defend freedom and let vote splitting do what his own party won’t – get him re-elected.

  9. William Bailey March 21, 2010 08:50 am

This time around, I’ll not work as a support or vote for him…

Good luck Nye. As I see it, he put his career interests ahead of the nations… I can’t vote for that type person. So while I wish him well, I’m done with him.

  10. Brad Martin March 21, 2010 11:36 am

Laura – the ad hominem attacks aside, you’re just plain wrong. Scott Brown is liberal on social issues, and I don’t have to tell you what he accomplished with Massachusetts voters.

I’m both pro-choice and anti-abortion, but I don’t let that single issue dominate my political thinking. I also could care less about Nye voting with his party in situations where a detracting vote would be meaningless – what difference would it have made if he had voted against Pelosi being Speaker in his first few weeks of office? That would be a self-neutering if I ever saw one.

What is it that’s making you so angry at me?

  11. Glenn Nye March 21, 2010 17:42 pm

  12. laura March 21, 2010 17:55 pm

Earth to Brad….It’s not about you and your thoughts. There are many many single issue or social conservative voters in the GOP and they would not tolerate nor ever vote for a Democrat party switcher as their congressman since they have a solid Republican to choose instead.

Furthermore, Scott Brown is not a party switcher. And Massachusetts isn’t Virginia Beach. Your argument makes no sense.

Your earlier post – “I think we have very little hope of Nye sticking to his previous “no” vote. What reason does he have to withstand what I’m sure is a barrage of attention and arm-twisting?”

    Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
