Nye to vote “no” on healthcare
By | Saturday, March 20th, 2010 | Policy

Breaking news from the Virginian-Pilot: embattled first-term Democrat Glenn Nye from Virginia’s second district will vote “no” on healthcare tomorrow, saying it does not go far enough to reduce costs.

Nye, who is now being challenged by eight Republicans (Rigell, Mizusawa, Golden, Taylor, Loyola, Smith, Maulbeck, and Sandlin), was first elected in 2008 and has been rumored as a potential party-switcher.

Hey, Glenn, the GOP field is wide open. C’mon over…it’ll be fun. ‘Cause after tomorrow, there isn’t a progressive in Virginia Beach who will work for you.

Regardless, the “on the fence” Democrats have mostly made themselves known…

Nye is the only “Nay”
Connolly, Boucher are “Yea”
Perriello is “Yea”, provided the bill has the good parts.

This must mean that Pelosi has enough votes. It’s the only reason that she’d release Nye to vote “no”. That way, he can save some face.

Since the Dems have decided to not incorporate the “deem and pass”, obviously they feel they have enough votes. I don’t know if it is a question of Pelosi releasing Nye, he knows there is no way he could ever get re-elected here if he voted yes. Hampton Roads has the largest military population in Virginia. Any bill that would negatively effect Tricare for our military is a bad bill. Any yes vote that would hurt the military is an automatic death sentence for any career here for a politician.

If it were not so sad it would be funny.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t Rep. Boucher come out this past week or last week saying that he was a no vote?

  5. JR Hoeft March 21, 2010 16:19 pm

Matt – Boucher was a solid no up until about a week ago. We even reported him as a no. Now, most reports have him as undecided and I have seen a couple saying that he’s leaning yes.

Well it doesn’t matter now. Since Rep. Stupak has cut a deal with Pres. Obama the dems have well over the needed 216. Now lets see if Rep. Nye switches his vote since he won’t be anywhere near a deciding vote.

[...] night, he disappointed everyone by announcing he would oppose the bill today. * In a bizarre develoGlenn Nye – Glenn Nye (D-Va.) voted against reform in November, but was believed to be a possible switcher. [...]

I think that Representative Nye, emphasis on Representative, has stood alone and taken the barbs and arrows from both sides. He has demonstrated true independence and, quite candidly, he may have started a movement to that end. I could only wish Representatives from both sides would join and line up behind him to resolve the lack of non-partisan leadership this country sorely needs to set it on the correct path. Well done, Congressman Nye!

Thank you Congressman Glenn Nye for voting against obamacare twice and against cap and trade.
I have decided to vote for Glenn Nye for reelection.

  11. Britt Howard March 22, 2010 10:57 am

Thank you Representative Nye. He has my support too, James.

  12. SE VA MWC Alum March 22, 2010 11:05 am

I voted for Nye last time and due to this vote shall probably do so again. I highly respect members who buck their party line when they think it right-regardless of which party

  13. Joel McDonald March 22, 2010 11:12 am

I’ll be calling on everyone here pledging their support for Nye to go out and canvass and make phone calls with me!

  14. James March 22, 2010 12:01 pm

If I’m voting for someone in the 2nd, it is going to be a Republican, not Nye’s half-assed attempt to be one.

  15. Britt Howard March 22, 2010 12:19 pm

“If I’m voting for someone in the 2nd, it is going to be a Republican, not Nye’s half-assed attempt to be one.”

You mean like Olympia Snowe? Dede Scozzafava? Arlen Specter?

I’d put Glenn Nye’s record up against any of those Republicans and many local RINOs any day. Name and party don’t make a conservative.

However, James, I understand if you’re just pushing a particular candidate and see Nye as your enemy. (Eventhough Nye voted to protect you) Still, I can understand and respect that. I know some care more about team and name. Also, some of you just will think a particular GOP candidate is so awesome, that you’ll grudgingly not reward Nye’s great representation and go with the candidate you are dying to support.

I do understand all that and respect it. I personally, am just going to fight for Glenn Nye, like he did for us. Nothing personal.

  16. James March 22, 2010 14:43 pm

Voted to protect me or himself?

  17. Politics with Pam March 22, 2010 22:11 pm

    Britt & James & Joel,

Sorry, both of you are misguided if you think Glen Nye amounts to anything much just because Pelosi gave him permission to vote no. He is still toast.

The loss of 2 carriers is more than enough to vote against Glen Nye.

Yes, it will be two if Mayport becomes a reality.

  18. Odu Condervative March 23, 2010 04:09 am

Man he’s less of RINO than rigell
