As to the social moderate discussion, it is a valid point in considering her viability as a candidate. She is welcome in the party, but the more “liberal” her social moderate views are, the fewer the numbers of people in the party who will support her. D.J.’s post isn’t exactly unbiased, but I don’t expect it to be.

Gee, D.J. I’m trying to figure you out. Just answer me this. Who are the GOP you are talking about? Where are they and where do they meet? I think you better look again, because an effective precinct organization is pretty well non-existent. As a matter of fact, more often than not, even the posters on this site are in the political business for a pay check. Candidates realistically rely on their own volunteer base whether or not their volunteers consider themselves GOP or not. We have a point of semantic incoherency. There are differences between “GOP”, volunteers, and the electorate. Who are you talking of?

Good post, DJ. I agree, if she has not been involved in the local party before now, she has no business running for our nomination. She would be better off running as an independant, however I’m glad she is not, as she would only be a spoiler candidate. With that said, social issues like abortion and gay marriage are a part of our platform, so if you are running for our nomination you should support our platform. Just sayin.

Will…the….Virginia…Beach….GOP….get…behind….someone….who…has…never…been…involved…with..the…party…before?

If the stars align and she wins, sure it’ll happen. Until then, she’ll get few signatures, zero door knocking help and no phone call assistance from the party that she says she has had no interest in participating in.

Oblivious?, oblivious? How many individuals (total) are actively involved in the VA-2nd District GOP (City Committees, clubs, etc) as a percentage of those that will participate in the primary? How about a fraction of 1 percent? Who is oblivious and tripping through la-la land? <|:-)

Besides, isn’t the Tea Party drawing in a LOT of people who have never taken an active interest in partisan politics before? That’s my experience. What’s wrong with new people getting involved? I think it’s healthy for our Party.

If you meant to comment on her involvement in the Party, why did you highlight the part about her being a social moderate?

Without knowing anything about this particular individual, I submit that the Republican Party is exactly the place for most people who describe themselves as social moderate/fiscal conservative, just as it is for most fiscal/social conservatives, for most fiscal moderate/social conservatives, some fiscal/social moderates and probably some other combinations.

I did not word this correctly, I apologize.

My meaning was more about not being interested in being a part of the party, not the social moderation. If you have no interest in being in the local party, why run for the Republican nomination?

Sandlin would be much better off running as an independent, regardless of her views. She’s chosen for 14(?) years not to be a part of the Republican Party, why try to represent it now?

Wow, when did you become the gatekeeper of all that is the GOP? I have moderate views on some issues, does that mean I am not worthy of being a Republican. Social Moderate is subjective at best. You SHOULD have contacted her and asked her what her views are on specific issues, reprot it and then let the voters of the 2nd District decide what is best for them.

At the rate your going lately the only office your going to be allowed to run for is dog catcher, and then, maybe! A number of your past posts shows a real bias against those who don’t fit your ideal of the “perfect” candidate.

Who cares if there are 20 candidates running for the nomination. If someone can get all the required signatures to get on the primary ballot, then let them run, and let the best candidate win.

DJ – wow…wish you would have run this story idea by me before posting. Hardly a big tent approach to party building and, your argument, is exactly the wrong approach for the overall campaign.

The GOP should welcome all ideas – even socially moderate ones.

She may not win the nomination, but she is certainly welcome to try.

Boy, Spiker, your all not that correct either. First, the Saturday Morning Breakfast is far from a “Virginia Beach City Committee” breakfast. Secondly, other than Golden and Smith, who were Chairman, I can count on one hand (or foot as the case may be), the number of times any of the other candidates showed up for either the breakfast or the city committee meeting before they contemplated running for office. So to your statement ” … it does if someone wants to be taken seriously as a credible candidate”. Are you considering only Golden and Smith credible? Spin that.
