How will Virginia’s Congressional Delegation vote on Health Care?
By JR Hoeft | Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 | PolicyLater this week, Health Care “reform” – aka government takeover of 1/6th of the national economy – is likely to be voted on in the House of Representatives.
In all likelihood, most of the delegation will vote along party lines, with a couple of exceptions, perhaps, amongst Democrats.
Of the members of the Republican Party from Virginia in the House of Representatives – Rob Wittman (1st), Randy Forbes (4th), Bob Goodlatte (6th), Eric Cantor (7th), and Frank Wolf (10th) – none are likely to vote in favor of the bill.
The more liberal members of the Democratic Party – Bobby Scott (3rd) and Jim Moran (8th) – clearly will vote for the bill.
Rick Boucher (9th), who is facing a serious challenge from Del. Morgan Griffith, which might keep him from his 15th term, has indicated he will vote against the bill.
Regarding the freshmen congressmen who are Democrats – Glenn Nye (2nd), Tom Perriello (5th), and Gerry Connolly (11th) – we only know what one will do for sure.
Connolly, who serves on the Committee on the Budget, voted against all practical amendments by Republicans to the markup of the Reconciliation Act of 2010.
Connolly voted against such things as no Medicare cuts to pay for new entitlements and preventing government from limiting choice, among others; therefore, it would appear, Connolly is voting in favor of the bill when it comes to the floor.
Regarding Nye and Perriello, Nye voted against the original bill and Perriello voted for it. However, given that Speaker Pelosi needs every vote she can get, Nye being the 9th most vulnerable Democrat in the House, the White House threatening to withhold campaign funds to those who oppose Obama’s plan, and Nye opposing other important bills on the progressive agenda, the Speaker and Progressives may just call in their chips and put a ton of pressure on the freshman Democrat to vote for the bill.

This is, of course, all hypothetical and contingent upon the fact that they are permitted to vote and the Senate version isn’t “deemed passed”.
Sorry J.R., you lost me with your first sentence. As a recipient of government health care, I simply do not fear the extension of health insurance to the uninsured, as we who have private health insurance are already paying for much of their care in the most expensive way possible; that is, when they are very sick, and in the emergency room. So if we are to pay, I would much rather it be the relatively inexpensive preventive care that is required to stay well, and I think those who are young and healthy, but get care again when they are sick or injured in the emergency room on us, they should pay as well.
Great Mike, then everyone who has private health insurance can just drop out, since you’ll favor them getting it for free.
I also support the Healthcare reform bill and I hope Nye votes for it. He’ll get attacked even if he votes “no” so he might as well vote to pass it.
And I too have government health run health care and I am very happy with it and have been since 1975.
Do you think Nye will be able to sell his vote get a whole bunch of funding for Light Rail?
Since it is supposed to be pushed through this week, anyone living in Glenn Nye’s district can call or write a letter expressing their views to:

I am gravely concerned about passing a bill that even Nancy seems to not know what is in it.
Perriello (5th) acts as if he’s undecided, but everything points to a YES vote:

If he’s rationalizing his support, then his support has already been given.
[...] is there not an up or down vote? Probably because the Speaker can’t find the votes. addthis_pub = 'jasonkenney'; Comments [2] E-Mail ThisDigg [...]
