Don’t Forget About VA-03! GOP Poised to Nominate First Candidate Since 2004
By D.J. Spiker | Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 | PoliticsWhile much press and attention has been made about VA-02, VA-05, VA-09 and VA-11, there are other Congressional races going on around the state. Amit covered the 8th sufficiently here, and as I live in the 3rd, I’ll bring you a quick rundown on the state of the 3rd District.
With the last legitimate nominee being Winsome Sears in 2004, who drew 31% of the vote, Republicans in the 3rd District will have a convention on May 22nd to pick a candidate between four (I have information on three) individuals. …I’m gonna try and be gentle…
John Tignor (www.tignorforcongress.com)
Tignor is new to politics, owner of a small business living in Norfolk. He has had a presence at the 3rd District meeting in January, as well as appearances in at least Norfolk and Portsmouth. Generally keeps his remarks short and sweet.
Bill Hutchens (www.electbillhutchens.com)
Hutchens is also new to politics, he’s a doctor at EVMS, living in Norfolk having moved here in 2002. Healthcare was his primary driver to run. Has been diligent in attending as many meeting as possible throughout the district. My opinion, as of now is the ‘front-runner’ (I use that term quite loosely)
Coby Dillard (www.cobydillard.com)
Dillard is a political veteran with new media savvy. Dillard is frequently on Twitter and Facebook. A big proponent of the Tea Party movement. Worked for Bob McDonnell’s campaign. However, has not had a presence at any meeting in Norfolk or Portsmouth since the 3rd District meeting in January.
There are one or two others, I’ve heard rumors of a gentleman from Henrico as well as another person I have no information about. Obviously, the odds are steep in a district that is custom-tailored for Bobby Scott. At the rate it’s looking in the 3rd right now, I don’t believe any candidate has the chance to beat him.

And the Libertarian candidate…
Was speaking strictly on the Republican side, but yes, James Quigley is running as a Libertarian candidate as well
This is as dumb as Democrats nominating a candidate in the 1st. A Republican can not win the 3rd District as currently drawn.
Steve, I’m afraid (and certain) you are right. However, for those of us in the 3rd CD, this is quite exciting. In 2008 I worked in the Forbes camp considering I live in a county (Prince George) that is split right down the middle between the 3rd and 4th.
I’d be crazy to claim that a Republican candidate has a reasonable expectation of winning easily within the 3rd district, BUT, I truly believe that not having any alternatice at all in casting a ballot effectively disenfrnachises us all. One can only hope that there are no uncontested elections in the fall, if only to start actually dealing with locally important issues, and because any hope of restoring a legistlative leash on both parties is to insure that no one is assurred of a seat.
