Verga: Politicians like Perriello and Hurt Don’t Understand Job Creation
By Guest Post | Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 | PoliticsGuest post by Laurence Verga, candidate for the 5th Congressional District Republican nomination
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – American enterprise, small business, and in the end, people are the driving force of job creation. Government, at any level does not create jobs. Fundamentally, we need to understand that in order to create jobs we must free business and the people who run them of excessive and job killing taxes and regulations.
Politicians often like to cite the “job creation legislation” they support. For example, Democrat Congressman Tom Perriello and Republican State Senator Robert Hurt both talk about their support of small targeted tax credits for businesses that hire new employees. It is clear they both start with the fundamental view that the government should control business. Providing a tax credit to the tune of $333 up to $5,000 is not the infusion of capital our businesses need to create high quality, good paying jobs. One has to wonder where the common sense has gone when politicians like Perriello and Hurt vote to raise taxes and then think they can create jobs with insignificant tax credits for businesses. Let us keep our money to begin with!
Recently, a small business owner in Charlottesville frustratingly remarked to me, “These miniscule tax credits are worthless. How would I pay for the rest of their salary?” From speaking with entrepreneurs across the 5th District and from my own career in building and managing companies for over two decades, I understand that employers don’t hire because of tax credits but because they have the capital to open a business or expand the business they have.
Both President John F. Kennedy and President Ronald Reagan recognized this common-sense reality and fought for bold, permanent across the board tax cuts that put capital in the hands of as many people as possible and encouraged them to invest it with higher rates of return. The result: significant economic and revenue growth.
In order to reverse the high unemployment rate throughout the 5th Congressional District we must quickly change the mindset that has settled upon politicians of both parties and quickly enact policy that allows people and business to keep their money in the first place. We do not need gimmicks like tax credits – we need money to stay in the pockets of those who spend it and those who use it to grow business and create jobs.
To restore our economic prosperity I have proposed we:
LOWER TAXES – We need to dramatically reduce the corporate income and average small business tax rates to make America competitive again in the global marketplace.
STOP RECKLESS GOVERNMENT SPENDING – Whether it is proposals like ObamaCare or Wall Street bailouts, government must stop the grossly out of control spending.
INCENTIVIZE INVESTMENT- Eliminate double taxes like the capital gains and death tax that take away capital from the private sector and into the hands of an inefficient government. Their elimination will increase the available capital in the free market necessary to fuel economic expansion.
The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results, so why would we ever expect different results when electing people who make their career as an elected official?
I have fixed broken businesses as my career and know first-hand that to create jobs we need real capital to flow into the hands of the American people. People are hurting and need jobs. The answer is not in more or bigger government. The answer, as it is has always been is in the wisdom, creativity and perseverance of the people of our country, state and district.

Mr. Verga has good ideas. and I have nothing negative to say about him. But can he raise the money to challenge Perriello? can he think 1 or 2 paragraphs ahead (like trial lawyers are trained to do) to debate Perriello? can he appeal to the most people in the 5th?
the OFA (Organizing for America) is gunning for the 5th CD; we are one of only 2 races that the entire volunteer group from the DNC is targeting. we must field our overall strongest candidate.
and as great a conservative as Verga may be, i do not believe he is our strongest candidate.
I have a few questions for Mr. Verga:
1. Which spending would you like to see reduced if you are elected to Congress. Assuming that Health Care fails and no more bailouts are passed, our budget is still not balanced. Would you support cuts to any of the following areas of the budget (which are also the biggest items in the budget): Defense, Social Security, Medicare?
2. Is a tax-cut not the most productive economic stimulant the Government can issue? Essentially, if taxes were extremely low across the board and a recession or economic down turn hits, what possible stimulant could be introduced to the market other than a tax cut?
3. Though I COMPLETELY agree with you that Government does not need to directly create jobs, I’m also of the notion that Government needs to provide the atmosphere for job creation. First, do you support that notion. And second, what plans would you have to help promote long term Economic growth and job creation? (Not direct Government involvement, but plans to help create a better Economic Atmosphere and more Economic Opportunity for Americans).
This post is oxymoronic. You state “Democrat Congressman Tom Perriello and Republican State Senator Robert Hurt both talk about their support of small targeted tax credits for businesses that hire new employees. It is clear they both start with the fundamental view that the government should control business.”
AND THEN the first point of your plan is to “LOWER TAXES.” So under your own logic, do you have the fundamental view that the government should control business?
The whole Verga campaign has been noun, verb and “Robert Hurt sucks.” I need something more…
I’m a firm believer that the People deserve a smaller government. The Federal Government has grown in my lifetime far to large and fast. Now every time you turn around a permit is required. Well Freedom doesn’t suggest asking for permission every time you want to start a project, business, or grow your business. Mike McPadden shares Mr. Verga’s view but wants to take a couple more steps; for instance closing Federal Government failures.
The Dept. of Education spends millions of dollars every year and have proven themselves a burden and waste of money. Our Children are not getting the proper lessons once taught in school. Social Engineering is the Dept of Educations focus. History is only boring if you learn it in a public school. Closing the Dept. of Education would move money back to the States without the Federal CUT and there would still be a savings with the Federal Budget.
Mike McPadden wants to restore liberty, responsibilities, and rights to the several states and the People. He wants to change our overweight federal government and place it on a diet. A diet of States Rights and Liberty for All!
@Aaron – I think what Mr. Verga is trying to say is that lowering taxes is government releasing control. Taking money from the people and their businesses and returning it only when they see fit IS government controlling businesses. Leaving that money in the pockets of those who earned it is returning that control to the people.
Kelly and Aaron, Robert Hurt is a good man. I and many like me bear him no ill will. But his voting record shows a strong belief that government should control business. There are many in this district that simply will not vote for those beliefs. If you want to defeat Mr. Perriello, its time to look for a candidate that will bring out voters. It seems to me, based mostly on the statements of Kelley, that you will check any box that doesn’t say Perriello. If that is the case, maybe you should look for a candidate that people won’t boycott, run against, or leave the party over…
I’ve met all of the candidates. I’ve talked to them. I’ve read their positions on their respective websites. If you want a candidate running on a positive platform, with a strong conservative stance, and the ability to unite this district, I’d tell you to take a look at Mr. McPadden. Go to the debate this weekend in Lynchburg and you’ll see a man who can go toe to toe with anyone. He is a true conservative with a positive attitude and serious plans to reduce the size of our government.
