Want Freedom Fries with that?
By Amit Singh | Sunday, February 21st, 2010 | PolicyWhat would happen in the US if a restaurant chain decided to only cater to a specific population? Perhaps they target Hindu vegetarians or only served Jewish kosher meals, would we expect the government to sue the restaurant chain on our behalf for reverse discrimination? Apparently in the country so many liberals want us to become more like, that is exactly what is happening to a restaurant chain that is only serving halal meats to win over the Muslim market estimated at $7.5B annually in France. This is just another reminder of how “political correctness” hurts us both ways and giving so much power to the government is the equivalent to losing our individual rights.

Hmmm… halal slaughtering drains 90% of the blood from the cow. Less blood= tastier meat? Perhaps no one should complain?!
As a Hindu vegetarian, I’m still waiting for McD’s to catch up…
don’t you know that Hindu vegetarians only eat at Subway?
My secret’s out? Man… I thought I was the only one. And at $5, it’s a real deal!
Not sure I have a problem with this… if a business is pressured by a community to serve halal (or kosher) meats — and does — then who am I to insist otherwise?
I’ll just go across the street to the restaurant that serves big, marbled, bloody steaks.
Shaun and I agree as to the big, marbled, bloody steaks.
Liberals want America to become more like France? Well sure, as far as health care goes, I guess. But what about nuclear power, which the French are well ahead of us in? Don’t conservatives want the U.S. to be more like France in that regard? And I kind of doubt that it’s the “liberals” in France — if that terms even translates to their poltiics — who want to shut down the halal restaurant.
@Shaun, that’s Amit’s point — in France, the separation of church and state trumps individual and corporate liberty, so you can’t have a business that caters to a religion, and Muslim girls can’t cover their head in school if they want to for religious reasons.
@Steve is right, demagoguery of France as a whole as if they are a version of ultra-Democrats here in the US does not translate on a host of issues including nuclear power.
thanks Vijay. I can’t respond to blogs during work. I don’t consider France as ultra-democrat as much as uber-statist. when so much control is given to the govt then it is very easy for them to take away your rights. imagine what national healthcare would be like if Sarah Palin or Bob Marshall was president?!
