Our comrades in the Democratic Party have a positive view of socialism
By | Friday, February 5th, 2010 | Policy

Some might wonder why Republicans are skeptical of the big government programs being proposed by President Barack Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Leader Harry Reid, and why some of us (even as far back as 2008) were calling these ideas “socialist” or “communist”.

Well…it would appear that our claims are justified when you now look at the beliefs of their primary constituency: According to Gallup, 53% of Democrats have a positive view of socialism.

I don’t really think anything more needs to be said.

    That’s a riot!

Especially on the heels of the suspicious Daily Kos poll commissioned to help Kos round out his book on what Republicans believe (to provide himself with “proof” to support opinions he already holds).

In referencing that poll, Kos (and Lowell — http://www.bluevirginia.us/2010/02/poll-of-republicans-nothing-short-of.html) scoffed that 63-percent of Republicans think Obama is a socialist.

Now we find that more than half of Democrats think socialism is just cool!

    Scoff away, comrades!

why would we even have to poll the number of people (not just Republicans) who think Obama is a socialist? what are his policies? he said he wanted to redistribute the wealth. cap ‘n trade, obamacare would both be huge steps in that direction.

i didn’t think anyone doubted that Obama is a socialist. he just calls himself a Democrat. and to no one’s surprise, the majority of Dems think it is all OK.

Brilliant! Given that the Democratic Party’s knee jerk answer is to always believe that government is the solution to all of our problems (and never the private sector or free enterprise), the #s can’t be a surprise at all.

Venu – those must be “social” conservatives.

if you owed your mediocre job with mediocre skills to the govt you would have a positive view of socialism too

    @Amit,

So anyone that earns a living from the Government is a socialist?

  8. Amit February 6, 2010 09:20 am

@Venu, not everyone who works for the govt, but 53% does seem reasonable to me. of course these folks do not explicitly call themselves socialists but they believe in the power of govt to provide solutions over the private sector.

having worked with the federal govt for 14 years now my breakdown of govt workers is probably:

10% – really smart and hardworking
15% – either really smart or hardworking
    50% – mediocre or lazy
25% – below average, you wonder how they ever got a job

of course my breakdown can change depending on how many meetings I had to attend that day!
