President’s visit to House GOP Caucus shows rift between White House and Democratic House leaders

If anything can be learned by this past Friday’s visit by President Barack Obama to the House GOP Caucus retreat in Baltimore it’s this – that there is less issue with the “loyal opposition” that Republicans have been providing to the president and that there is a widening rift between the President and Democrats in the House.

Consider the following points about this visit…

1. The President admitted repeatedly and clearly that Republicans have been offering substantive solutions to all his legislative proposals. So, in spite of what we have heard from the President, DNC, and House Democrats calling Republicans the “Party of ‘No'”, the President himself admitted that he has been reading and considering the GOP’s proposals over the past year. This is exactly the opposite of what the DNC and House Democratic statements have been saying – exposing this unnecessary and divisive language as a lie. For example, responding to Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee regarding health care, the President said, “Actually, I’ve gotten many of your ideas. I’ve taken a look at them….Some of the ideas we have embraced in our package. Some of them are embraced with caveats.”

2. House Republicans clearly won on the facts regarding this so-called “face off”. Often during the discussion, the President responded by questioning the question and attempted to dismiss the questions as “talking points.” A source close to House Republicans told me this weekend that:

“Increased spending is not a talking point, it is a fact. Increased national debt is not a talking point, it is a fact. Disappointment in his hyper-partisan administration is not a talking point, it is a fact. The fact that the President refuses to answer these questions (and the overall response by Democratic operatives) only further confirms how out of touch they are and the downward path they are on.”

3. And finally, but perhaps most importantly, the President kept up his criticism on Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats.

“I would just say that we have to think about tone. It’s not just on your side, by the way — it’s on our side, as well. This is part of what’s happened in our politics, where we demonize the other side so much that when it comes to actually getting things done, it becomes tough to do.”

The bottom-line is that with control of the House, the Senate, and the Presidency, the tone-setters remain the Democrats. And it will be up to them to cease closed-door politics and backroom deals. And the only way the President can influence that tone and live up to his rhetoric is if he ensures Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid permit Republicans to be part of the solution, vice always claiming they’re the problem.

The ball is clearly in the Speaker’s and Leader’s court. Will they listen to the President and usher in bipartisanship, or will it continue to be politics as usual, replete with divisive rhetoric and closed doors?
