McDonnell cancels events in advance of storm
By JR Hoeft | Friday, January 29th, 2010 | PolicyWhat a difference a governor makes.
Governor Bob McDonnell, who was scheduled to headline at the House Caucus retreat in Baltimore and the Alfalfa Club Dinner in DC this weekend has canceled them in advance of the winter storm, according to Virginia Politics from the Washington Post. He will stay in Richmond, monitor the storms progress, and direct the response from Virginia’s government.
Compare that with Tim Kaine jet-setting to Arkansas last November for a fundraiser as a major Nor’easter blew into Virginia, complete with an 8-foot storm surge. Kaine decided the fundraiser was more important than ensuring he was available for his primary role as governor – making decisions as it relates to Virginia’s safety and security.
What a difference three months and an election makes.

Its a tremendous difference.
JR: That was a real lame… I could spin it to say, Bob is just spending millions more money on a winter storm emergency from Richmond when Virginia is 4 billion short already. I won’t bother as I’m not about to contribute to the lameness(is that a word?) of this blog…
It isn’t like either one has anything to do with the storm emergency other than make a few phone calls and sign a few papers.
Mr. Bailey,
When a Republican does not focus 100% attention to an emergency, they are out of touch. When a Repbulican does, he is spending too much money.
Actually by not going he is probably saving money – because that is a travel expense security, etc, etc. I think it shows he cares about DOING HIS JOB as Governor which Kaine forgot about as soon as he took the DNC spot.
If Bob McD actually wanted to save money and cared about doing his job, he would have told the national GOP he was too busy to respond to Obama’s State of The Union speech because he was focusing on doing his job in Virginia…
But Bob didn’t care about the cost and made a national speech instead doing his Virginia job first…
Will-
Bob picked up the cost of the speech from his campaign account and split it with the RGA and NRCC. He didn’t shovel it off on the tax payers.
I agree. Thank goodness we have a governor who is focused on the needs and security of his constituents.
Maybe I was wrong and his speech actually created jobs in Virginia….
But I can’t see how his response speech put Viginian’s ahead of anyone other than Bob’s ego and national politics.
I realize the Governor is in a predicament; if Congress passes the President’s budget, in which there is aid to state and local government, then perhaps he would prefer not to make the cuts now to present a balanced budget in Virginia. So how to prevent the political effects of cutting $4,000,000,000 some of which may be made unnecessary by federal aid? Perhaps we will see continuing resolutions until the results of the Federal budget have been determined. So many balls in the air no one knows where they will land.
