Bob McDonnell to Deliver GOP Response to State of Union
By D.J. Spiker | Thursday, January 21st, 2010 | Policy, PoliticsForget those Scott Brown rumors you heard in the joyous aftermath of the Massachusetts Miracle, today it was announced that Governor Bob McDonnell will deliver the Republican response to President Obama on January 27th. Same to say given his poise and experience before the camera, we won’t have any Bobby Jindal-esque appearance/speaking gaffes like last year. This is a great opportunity for Bob and the Commonwealth to continue the rising conservative momentum from around the country.
Today, released from Minority Leader Boehner’s office:
Gov. McDonnell to Deliver Republican Address to the Nation on January 27
-Speech to immediately follow President Obama’s State of the Union-
WASHINGTON, DC –House Republican Leader John Boehner (OH) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) announced today that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell will give the Republican address following the President’s State of the Union address to Congress on January 27, 2010. Further details regarding location, coverage and exact time will be released in the days ahead.
In making the announcement, Leader Boehner noted the Governor’s leadership on the economy and offering solutions to help create jobs and put Virginians back to work:
“As the American people continue to ask, ‘where are the jobs,’ Gov. McDonnell has offered common-sense economic policies in stark contrast to Washington Democrats’ job-killing agenda. We don’t need a government takeover of health care or a ‘cap-and-trade’ national energy tax – we need a common-sense plan to help middle-class families and small businesses and allow them to keep more of what they earn so they can save, invest, and hire.”
Leader McConnell said the Governor understands the frustration of Americans and is a leader who offers common sense solutions:
“Gov. McDonnell understands that the American people are more interested in shrinking unemployment than expanding government. He is an impressive public servant and an excellent choice to offer Republican solutions for our country.”
NOTE: Bob McDonnell is the recently inaugurated 71st Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the 2009 gubernatorial campaign he received the most votes of any candidate for Governor in the history of Virginia. Prior to running for Governor, Mr. McDonnell served as the 44th Attorney General of Virginia. He represented the 84th District, Virginia Beach, in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1991-2005. Before his election to the House, McDonnell served as a prosecutor in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office. He also served 21 years in the U.S. Army, both active duty and reserves, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1997. He is married to the former Maureen Gardner of McLean, and they have five children, ages 18-29. Their oldest daughter, Jeanine, recently completed service in the U.S. Army, including a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005-2006.

Kaine’s 2006 appearance thrust him onto the national stage…and gave birth to the “eyebrow”, but also led to him becoming a leader within the Democratic Party.
The parallels are certainly similar. Bush coming off another victory/Obama winning in 2008…Kaine winning in a “red” state…the governor being perceived as a tempered, moderating, rational voice…the country being upset with the policies of the administration…
Excellent remembering skills there, J.R. I predict Bob will do a great job and appeal to the Pres to come to the center, where the GOP will be waiting for him, for the good of the country.
Laura: Doubt they’ll be waiting for him there. They aren’t there now. I think McD will do well, possibly launching a 2012 campaign. He’s an ambitious guy.
Bob will do great – but he will not be launching a 2012 campaign, he has promised to finish his term as Gov. However, Mr. Warner better be watching his back for the 2014 Senate race, or depending on the occupant of the oval office after 2012 you may well see a 2016 run for President.
As I said on Twitter the other day… “_Governor_ Bob McDonnell…”
Nice statement from Rep. Eric Cantor as well:
Also blogging was Lynn Mitchell who wrhote:
That would be a big, “Yes,” Lynn!
As a Virginian, I applaud the fact that McDonnell was selected, and wish him well on his response. Yet, I am struck by the similarity of the Nobel Peace Prize for the President based on what he said he said he will do, and this selection. Yes, McDonnell said he would fix transportation, create jobs, and restore prosperity, yet he has announced he will postpone transportation for a year, his budget cuts will result in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs, and the fiscal effect in local communities of the loss of these jobs will further depress cities and towns. I guess “I’m Gonna” is the new buzz phrase.
Mike,
You seem to forget that McDonnell has been in state government sonce the 90′s. He has a record as Delegate and Attorney General. In those jobs, he was tremendously effective, and so far, he has been making the right moves as governor. I am looking forward to his response as a Virginian and as a conservatve Republican.
Well Steve, of course I have not forgotten his record. As a Delegate he joined with the anti tax majority in the House to dismantle a once proud and effective transportation system, and as Attorney General, he ran the most successful public relations office in the history of the Commonwealth. I truly hope that now that he has been elected to govern, he works for all Virginians. Firing tens of thousand workers statewide does not meet that definition for me, and does not create the conditions for prosperity for the Commonwealth.
