To: Steve BierfeldtSteve – no, health insurance should be affordable and mandatory. Mandates will bring down the cost for people like you and me and you should be supportive. This will also make it affordable. Everyone, individuals and businesses, could use a little more savings in this economic environment.

Thank you for responding to my email. As someone who currently does not have health insurance by choice, the bill being discussed in the U.S. House and Senate includes penalties for people who do not comply, including prison time.
Are you going to help the government to put me in prison? Please be frank, is that what I can expect from my elected Representative for the next two years of your term?

I cannot believe that there are Americans that really believe this is o.k.
Freedom in America? Not with these types of socialists in charge there isn’t.
Elections have consequences.

Wow they tax us for dying now they will tax us for being alive. Talk about the ultimate rock and a hard place.
Dude, the guy’s from Arlington, what do you expect?
What a crock of crap, every day that goes by democrats dismantle our constitution and country. I’m pissed off, this is beyound ridiculous!
Patrick Hopeless!
Amazing…usually you have to actually have been sworn in as a Delegate and do something before you make my “top a-holes in Virginia politics” list, but this guy has managed to do so before he has even set foot in a General Assembly session!
The language which establishes Debtors Prisons is probably hidden in some version, amendment or rider to the Health Care Bill. A body of law will be established where debtors will have the option to be serfs working for Acorn or SEIU, indentured servants working for the Banks, or just prisoners until their families can pay off their debt. Of course this covers Health Care, but wait until they get ramped up on Carbon taxes. We are all going to be in prison eventually, so in order to be free as long as possible, I am going to have to buy an old mobile camper and move frequently to stay ahead of them.
Wait until they convert your 401K/IRA into Treasury “annuities” in order to save you from the dangers of the market….

If you guys are so against this, just quit paying. Not another penny to the government. C’mon Tea Baggers, you want a protest? Just Say No!
I find it interesting that Dems such as Hope believe that mandates (which he also calls a tax) will bring prices down. mandates artificially increase demand and in turn artificially raise prices. guess one would argue that with increased demand, more suppliers would come to the market which would create more competition. but if we think competition is a good thing then give individuals a tax credit for purchasing their own health insurance instead of having to go through their employer.
anyway, thanks again Steve for standing up for out rights.
Eric, I told you to win that election!
amit,
Trust me, I tried
re: mandates and costs. Mandates do increase total healthcare costs. What hope should be saying is that mandates reduce costs of those who are high risk by forcing low risk people (young and healthy) to further subsidize higher risk individuals.
but the dems wouldnt be going as far if they were honest about their plan and had to tell all the young hope and change voters that they were picking up the bulk of the tab for the health plan.
In our new monetary system, “Hope” will replace the Dollar, and “Change” will be taxes. The “Hope” dollar will be worth hundreds of our current dollars. When you buy a gallon of milk it will cost 3 “Hope” dollars, you give the clerk a 5 and the “Change” will be the tax, you won’t get anything back. Or if you want to use the old dollar, the milk costs 300 dollars, you give the clerk a thousand dollar bill, you don’t get anything back.
Of course, now we all pay for the freeloaders in the system. This legislation makes them share in the cost. Public Health is a societal issue, not just an individual issue. Frankly, when I stand in a check out line, or enter a retail shop, or sit in a public hearing, I want the person next to me on both sides to be well. Of course, the true libertarians among us would vote not to treat citizens in the emergency wards if they can’t pay. Just let ‘em get sick and die.
Mike, can I now quote you as saying that you also support imprisoning people that refuse to buy healthcare? Just asking, because your last post could lead one to think that.
Do Chambers of Commerce realize you support socialized medicine? Do you support Cap and Trade, too?
I’m glad that you think that you are the ultimate authority on what a true Libertarian is. However, you certainly distort the views of Libertarians.
1)We do pay for free loaders now, but we will also under Obamacare.
2)You state:
“Of course, the true libertarians among us would vote not to treat citizens in the emergency wards if they can’t pay. Just let ‘em get sick and die.”
Absolutely incorrect, Mike. Emergency room care is something we would not withhold. In many instances the patient would be sent to another hospital that did more charity work after the patient was stabilized.
Libertarians just wouldn’t force hospitals to provide ongoing care knowing that the hospital would never see payment. There still would be treatment options at other hospitals that took such cases. Free will charity would play a large part. As it ALREADY DOES.
4)There is disagreement among Libertarians regarding immigration. Even the hard core “No Border” types however, don’t think immigrants should be allowed to enter the US for the sole purpose of using our medical infrastructure for free. The vast majority of us do believe in borders and after giving immediate emergency care, that person should be deported.
How you think that Obamacare will somehow get illegal aliens to share the cost burden is puzzling. I didn’t think you guys believed in putting illegals in jail for anything short of murder. How are you then going to force a law breaker to suddenly obey the law and buy medical insurance?
5)Libertarians strongly support Medical Savings Accounts. Many of us believe that employers or any individual citizen should be able to contribute to their own Medical Savings account or the account of any other individual with tax incentives for the donor. Pre-tax for employers and some sort of tax benefit for individual donors. (Adding to the account of your young adult children for example.)In addition to paying for Employee medical plans with pre-tax dollars, employers should be able to add to medical accounts of employees and even non-employees and still gain some tax break.
I don’t pretend to speak for all Libertarians. Libertarians like all parties, are not monolithic. There are extremes in all parties. I do however, appreciate the opportunity to correct misunderstandings when possible. Since Libertarians to a large degree have joined with conservatives of all parties in the Tea Party movement, I can understand a Fiscal Liberal wanting to take a slap at us and make us out to be heartless. Name calling does seem to be a Liberal Democrat strong suit. Just look at Bill Fleming.
Britt, I am not a member of a chamber of commerce, so I am speaking for myself, that is, the CEO of a company that pays outrageous fees now for health care for our employees. One of the reasons for such high cost is that the uninsured get their care in hospital emergency rooms, the highest cost service available. All of us who have insurance pay for that. The new plan requires citizens to have health care insurance so they can be served in much lower cost facilities. I support that.
Mike, I do apologize for the COC remark. In the past you have been on their side of many issues and for whatever reason, I thought you were a member. My mistake.
So, you do support imprisoning those that refuse to buy health insurance?
First, I have not read the language of the proposed compromise bill, so I can’t answer your question with a yes or no. Just as drivers must have a license and automobile insurance, so all citizens should have to pay to support the health care system. Just as there are penalties if you drive your automobile without insurance, so should there be penalties if you don’t buy health insurance. Again, now, we pay these costs in another form, that is, outrageous costs for those who receive care but don’t pay into the system.
[[[BREAKING]]]MURDER AT 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
(Washington, D.C.) Capitol Hill Police responding to a complaint of ‘a strong, foul odor’ have discovered the slain body of U.S. Economy in the subbasement of a Government building near the Capitol complex.
Police spokesman Don Underhill briefed waiting media: “Responding officers arrived on scene at approximately 1600 hours yesterday evening. They reported that the odor was evident as they left their squadcars. Officers followed the odor into the subject building and proceeded to the lower levels. As they neared what was later determined to be the crime scene they were forced to retreat by the overpowering smell, returning a short while later garbed in SCBA. At the crime scene, they discovered the slain body of U.S. Economy. Visual inspection was sufficient to determine that a homicide had been committed. While actual cause and time of death are pending the Coroner’s report, it appears the body had been in place for some time. Given the body’s location on Federal property, the FBI is taking the lead in the investigation.”
Your Outside The (Cardboard) Box investigative team has unearthed some shocking revelations and further details related to the murder. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Federal Agent described the ghoulish scene Forensic Investigators were confronted with: “It was awful. Even in full hazmat kit, the smell was barely tolerable. And the body – was – everywhere! That image has been seared into my brain.” Pressed for details, the Agent continues. “Investigator observations and evidence collected at the scene suggests that Economy was repeatedly bled to the brink of death and then maintained there for extended periods. There was evidence that transfusions were given to Economy as a restorative after incurring the most heinous wounds. We are only speculating but we think the killers, and it was clearly multiple killers, but we think the killers were, and this just sickens us to think this could be true, that they essentially milked Economy’s death for their own deranged benefit, extracting as much of whatever it was that they gained from such a despicable act and continued to do so until Economy was beyond resuscitation. It appears that just prior to Economy’s demise, the perpetrators realized they had exceeded Economy’s limits of survival so they accelerated their maiming of Economy in the most egregious fashion imaginable. Monsters! Absolute monsters did this. ”
OTCB has learned that the U.S. Attorney General is seeking to speak to a number of ‘Persons of Interest’ in regards to this murder. Chief among them is someone known as Ben the Fed. Another sought is named Tim at Treasury. A number of members of a possible criminal gang known as Congress are also being sought for questioning. A recent addition Investigators are very keen to speak with is someone known only by the initials TBTF. And one other Person of Interest being sought by the A.G. is named Goldman, no known nationality or address. If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of these individuals, do not approach them but please contact your local Authorities.
In a troubling turn of events, agents attempting to notify Economy’s next of kin have been unable to locate them. Consider this disturbing Request For Information from Investigators:
“As you are aware, U.S. Economy was found slain last evening. While normally the decedent’s name is withheld pending notification of next of kin, we are compelled to alter that practice today. Agents attempting to contact U.S. Economy’s next of kin, named U.S. Middle Class, have been unsuccessful. Citizens who have any information or know the whereabouts of U.S. Middle Class are asked to call their local FBI office.”
Speaking confidentially for fear of damaging the eventual prosecution of the perpetrators, agents fret that a fate similar to that of Economy may have already befallen Middle Class. “We’re not sure when it happened but we believe those persons of interest captured U.S. Economy quite some time ago. And now we’re concerned that U.S. Middle Class is trapped somewhere as well. We don’t know what condition Middle Class is in but, given how we found Economy, we don’t expect a positive resolution. All we can realistically hope for at this point is that Justice will eventually be served!”
While the investigation continues apace Stateside, across the Atlantic, Officers from Interpol are making inquires back to Washington as they investigate eerily similar crimes throughout Europe. Said a source within Interpol, “We have begun to consider the possibility, and I’ll go further, the probability that these heinous acts are the result of international coordination between various deviant criminal entities whose twisted purpose we have yet to fathom.” It has been reported that murder victims in Iceland, Ireland, the U.K., Ukraine and elsewhere are all named Economy and all bear the same hallmarks of unbearable, criminal stresses placed upon the victims. And while vociferously denied by Chinese Authorities, whispers from behind the Great Wall suggest a similar crime may have been committed in China. A recent briefing by the Peoples Police refuted such talk stating that the death in question was accidental, the result of a fall in the bathtub. Furthermore, the victim was not Chinese Economy but rather was Tibetan Economy.
